Browserlinux EeePC Edition

#1 Post by jemimah »

I've remastered Browserlinux for the Eeepc.
Download: http://drop.io/Puppeee

Features:
Ultralight mobile-optimized 2.6.31.5 kernel - works on Eeepc only (Celeron or Atom)
Faster boot time, smaller RAM footprint
All hotkeys work - with yaf-splash notifications
Suspend/resume
Power management (including overclocking and fan control)
Pwireless2 - replacement for network wizard
Flsynclient for touchpad configuration - including Elantech touchpad support
Powertop
Ramboot support - ultimate privacy, security, and powersaving
Meerkat Firefox add-on - better use of screen real estate
57 MB

New in version 2:
Retrovol, Vattery, and Traytemp
Eee-control
Pwireless2 Beta 2.9
Latest modem patches

To install, follow the instructions for Puppeee Linux, as the process is the same. You need to download all the Puppeee files, except use the BrowserLinux version of eee-435.sfs.

acer one

#2 Post by BHINTZ »

Hi,
Just downloaded and boot browsereee on my acer. It booted up fine found my network and connected and allows me to use all of this tiny screen. This is different from most puppies (including puppeee) I have tried on this machine recently. Suspend also works fine. I will be trying to figure out what is different about this version. Firefox certainly has a different toolbar which is missing several options that I am used to.

great work, thanks alot

Probably the kernel upgrade is responsible since I didn't modify X windows except to update the synaptics driver. That means the new Puppeee will probably work as well.

You can uninstall the Meerkat addon if you don't like it but I find it's invaulable on a netbook. The menu is there, just click the arrow in the upper right corner.

I did include the rt73usb module. If you modprobe for it, does it give an error?

Edit: Apparently it needs firmware. Download the firmware from here http://www.ralinktech.com/license_us.ph ... TVM0NEM%3D extract the rt73.bin and put it in /lib/firmware. Then reboot.

The link led me to where I can see only parts of puppy files not an iso.

What do I do from there?

And have you ever tried scim on the puplet? Especially Korean scim

Please educate me and save a poor soul from the darkness.

Thanks

John

Yep the Eeepc has no CD drive so an ISO doesn't necessarily make sense. I will make an ISO if people really want it, but currently I don't see the point.

I'm not sure about language support. This is just a remaster of Puppymartin's work. You might be able to ask on the Browserlinux forum.

jemimah,
FWIW I think your approach not to just go ahead and do the "obvious" and make an iso, but instead provide the "parts" to ease installing into an eee is completely correct. Just as it is for Puppeee.
Thanks for thinking out of the box.

screen real estate

BrowserLinux is great for the EEE 701. But it's even better with the Fluppy window manager pack.

Combining Meerkat and Flwm gives a very usable experience on the tiny screen.

Great!! I downloaded it on an XP machine and used Unetbootin to create a usb stick. Got on-line using wifi in no time flat. I'm running it on an Acer AA1.

Thanks... gerry

Oops- I found the bookmarks menu. It's a little down arrow at the right hand side.

Aha! me again. I found the BrowserLinux website. It's a remarkably single-minded distro! No package manager. It does what it says on the tin, and nothing more. Just what you need for a netbook.

The package manager is actually still there, it's just not on the menu. Typing 'dotpup' on the command line will bring it up.

unfortunatelly ....
i think that browserlinux itself misses some important things....
package manager do not download pets or there's no mp3lame lib....
so i can not use it( only my case)

so i contunue experiments with boxpupeee

I got abiword running by installing "wv" http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... 5-pup4.pet.

Opera is looking for libaudio, but I can't figure out which pet provides that.

I've been using browserlinux-eee successfully, using wlan0 with no set-up or reliability problems. I'm trying to get dpup484b4 to work- can't get on line with wlan0 at all. So.... I thought to copy the wireless profile from browserlinux into dpup. BUT.... I know where the profiles live in dpup, but can't find it/them in browserlinux-eee. Can someone tell me where the wireless profile is? Please?

Which model Eee do you have? Ones with the rt2860 wireless probably aren't going to work with Pwireless2 on any kernel older than 2.6.31.
