KDE 4.2

#1 Post by legendofthor »

G'day,
I was getting rather bored at work so I decided to do something exciting which would result in a complete failure. But I was wrong.
Probably punching above my weight here but my first attempt resulted in a semi-workable desktop. So this project looks feasible.
However, it is rather large and requires a minimum of 256mbs and 800mhz computer to run.
I'm using the slackware repository ( although I have heard that Debian Lenny should also be looked into). These have been converted to pet packages which I will give download links.
I am also using MUs newyearspup. The primary reason being that when I've looked at other distros with KDE4 the oldest kernel is 2.6.27. Some processes may be kernel sensitive.
So this is where I will place my test results.
I am not a computer professional so I expect some elements to be way beyond me...
Testers and contributors are welcome.
Well here we go!!!
Cheers
Martin
PS: Don't laugh if I muck things up.

Ready for Testing here:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 197#326197

This may be beyond beginners - it sure scares the heck out of me when I submitted the post.

G'day,
Well it's up and running - sort of - Amarok 2 needs a couple more dependencies and the Desktop screen is Grey but changes to normal display after changing something (anything) in Desktopoptions - need to investigate that.

It is very large - the Pets total approximately 550mbs (that's with all kde programmes including amarok) - need to trim the fat.

It requires MySQL - which has some rather bloated elements (such as the gui) will look into whether that can be omitted.

Also, I have been using ATI catalyst 9.3 - so I want to find out if just using the dri modules will be enough.

Soon will upload the Pets to Mediafire
Cheers
Martin

I was looking for this. Not that I'm very good at this, but I should be able to help you test this.

very pretty, not sure if that justifies a 30-hour download . . .

G'day,
Uploading now. Will place a new thread in Additional Software for download links when the uploads finish.

Happy to have any and all on board. Like me, I sort of understand what I'm doing and manage to achieve things by stumbling onto solutions. It's the Puppy spirit.

I tried it with Puppy 4.2 but there appears to be a number of extra dependencies required and finally d-bus wouldn't start (well after 8 hours I had had enough).
newyearspup is a good starting point.

Sry Bugman I'm not clever enough to squeeze it into a package that you would be able to download.

Cheers

to start dbus add this line to /root/.xinitrc near the bottom

dbus-uuidgen --ensure &

then save it and restart x-server

Plus a good working dbus package out of the box with the startup line I posted above is these 2 Slackware packages, I converted to pets and removed the doc,man pages and kept only the important stuff including the dev files:) They even worked on 2.14X :)

They should work on just about anything, You need to install both packages, I already made the system links for you :)

No need to know. Just click on the download links for the pet packages in the preceding post.
Time savers:
Find packages in a snap and install using Puppy Package Manager (Menu).

Use peppyy's puppysearch

G'day,
Small delay - have uploaded the files but haven't had the time to post them - very busy and my test didn't work out - I didn't load mysql before initialising kde - as a result even after installing mysql kde refused to detect mysql.

Going to re-test before posting links - also I had to redo missing-libs pet, so I apologise for the delay.

This all helps with documentation.

Warning: There are a lot of files to install! Only after testing will I, or someone else, will place the files in an sfs package to make installation easier.

So please be patient friends.

The problem ttuuxx is that in puppy 4.2, kde doesn't initialise d-bus - Puppy does but kde doesn't - I havent had this issue with newyearspup - not sure why???

Cheers
Martin

Yay! A new cooling unit in my lappy - it's quiet again!

Did you do the 2 thinks that I talked about above?
#1 to start dbus add this line to /root/.xinitrc near the bottom

dbus-uuidgen --ensure &
then save it and restart x-server

#2 install the 2 packages and restart x

If kde doesn't use xinitrc then you'll have to add that lone to whichever auto start/ launcher kde has for startup items,

Oh good. For a while I thought you had posted them, and I didn't know where. Take your time, this is supposed to be pleasant. 8)

G'day,
missinglibs is currently unfinished as I have discovered some conflicting dependencies. MySql and sound errors.
Needs more trial and error.

Oh, and that Desktop-Hack is a way to get the desktop viewable. It was all grey - it's some process that MU has in his Distro (which I am currently unsure of.

ttuuxx - will try Puppy 4.2 again but with the d-bus programmes installed before initialising KDE.
I will leave that to another day as I'm rather buggered at present.
Cheers

Arghh. Houston, we have a problem. :(

I can't download the files. Everytime I try I get a javascript error. It then recomends I try a different browser.

I have tried seamonkey, firefox, dillo, and opera. I have used ubuntu, puppy4.21, and new years pup.

So I'm missing something really simple  , or there's a problem at the server.

Anybody have any suggestions?

run the browser from command prompt/line like just type the name. firefox, seamonkey, opera and report the error.
