Puppy 4.2.1 Review

Shame about the final conclusion - otherwise not a desperately bad
overall appraisal.
Puppy's main strengths are clearly it's ability to make an otherwise
unusable computer - very usable.
If only these "knowledgeable" reviewers would go and get a few old
clonker computer's (not a virtual box on a go faster something with
all the latest wizzo's already connected) and then try to use a
selection of distro's on them, they would quickly realise that Puppy
is head and shoulders above all that is out there.
Especially if you are new to linux, are not familiar with command line
and only feel comfortable using the GUI (graphic user interface).
Many alternative choices will have you pulling your hair out - and if
by chance you manage to find a distro that will run on your old clunker,
just try and do something useful with it, like transfer some files or
simply write a letter and then save a copy to a usb or similar.
Puppy lets the non-technical user do all these things and more - easily.
Yes it would be nice if Puppy automagically set-up everything on every
machine it encountered - but let's be realistic.
Puppy can be installed and working in 5 to 15 minutes(maybe 20)
against 5 to 15 hours (download this upgrade and download these
further 150 upgrades - then download all this other stuff to
protect it) for a well known alternative.
Users of the latest netbooks also find Puppy to be far more usable
than the operating systems they are supplied with - so it's not just
users of what many would regard as scrap computers that benefit -
people using the very latest multi-core technology also find that Puppy
is far more useful, more reliable and very useable as a main operating system,prefering it to the OS that came with thier new wizzo.
Furthermore - have you ever tried to get help from the other OS's
support channels - and did they really help?
Puppy has very comprehensive help built in to the OS - plus the many
links to online help and forums, that include live chat.
What makes you think I rather like Puppy.

on a situation that is not relevant
Puppy works in a different way.
Primarily designed for standalone desktops (not networked computers)
Some security conscious Puppy users
run from multi-session or CD without a hard drive
using a USB keydrive to save data
They are actually MORE secure than other distros.
Nathan had a good page on the grafpup site (no longer with us?)
which answered some of the 'run as root' non issues.
Maybe e have a thread on the forum somewhere?

As on Prit's post I'll add here as well for a somewhat secure mode for running apps...Eric
Meanwhile, in any normal Puppy, you can already run most applications as a limited user with very little effort. For example, if I wanted to run seamonkey as a limited user, I could do this:
su spot seamonkey
Seamonkey will be running as spot, while everything else is root.
