4.3 Beta 1 -- bugs and reports

#1 Post by Lobster »

Been playing with 4.3 Beta 1

Officially released and announced by Barry here

Been trying to get PHP working
Hiawatha was OK - found a PHP pet
but no luck - does it have to be recompiled for
the new kernel and this Puppy version?

The Imagination DVD Slideshow maker is excellent
Better (but larger) and more intuitive than Fullerscreen (also available.
Did anyone get sound working with Imagination (linking to slide?) How?

The time web syncing took an hour of my UK time (erroneously) Boo! oh and it (and the change time option told me the screen might go blank AFTER it went blank - so code in wrong position?

Quisp now seems to be using Hiawatha instead of its own server?
Or am I confused again?

Anyway so far very good :)

Not had a chance to run through it all but i have found that "help" does not seem to work in Abiword, i have only run it in fix=ram.
I will install it to harddrive over the weekend and give it a good try.

Ignore help does not work, i realized i did not have the internet configured

Downloaded both versions , running live with usb save files. P3 (800 mhz) 256 mb ram w/ 1gb swap.

Kernel 2.6.29.6.........Opera 10 appeared to install but would not launch from menu or terminal. No error message only "command not found". Firefox 3.5 installed and launched but on the transfer settings page, during setup, froze entire computer requiring hard reboot.

Kernel 2.6.25.16.......both Opera 10 and Firefox installed fine and are working correctly.

On both kernels Pstream will not launch Gxine. However, Gxine works when launched from the menu.Am planning to download Mplayer and test further.

PstreamTV is failing to start Gxine.

Ah, Gxine is rolled back to 0.5.9,

Trio's latest is modded to accommodate 0.5.904.

Cheers

I believe he will post a patch soon :)

quick and dirty fix

open /usr/local/pstreamvid/funcions by right clicking and selecting Open As Text

Comment out (place a "#" at start of line) lines 19,20,21,22,25

It should look like the screeny
No Mick, please don't do that, you'll disable the "off" fullscreen. Just delete the --geometry ... 200% , then it should be good. i'll upload v 1.3 in pstreamvid thread to revert back to gxine 0.5.9

thanks

Hi, just to report that I had exactly the same experience as James C with Firefox.
Dies horribly with the Kernel 2.6.29.6 when you try to go past the transfer settings page (I'm sure I read somewhere about how to disable that check when Firefox first runs, that'd be worth a try if anybody knows how).
Seems to be working fine with the Kernel 2.6.25.16
Will start playing with other stuff.

Regards, Jon

Previously when the computer went down while using puppy such as from a power outage, our customers got the black screen with no directions what to do when they rebooted and they would call us for support. We are working on a solution for this but having this corrected in Puppy 4.3 would really help. The preferred solution would be an automatic recovery but another solution would be some verbage on the black screen telling them how to recover.

downloaded and burned the 4.3beta1 to a CD. Booted fine off the puppy 4.3beta1 CD. Formatted a USB flash drive to ext3, with Gparted.

Couldn't install onto the flash drive. Puppy universal installer said it was ext4 and wouldn't install.

Also tried formatting to ext2 and got the same message. Tried this with both kernels.

I could be doing something silly and messing it up, but this is how i usually do a clean puppy install to a flash drive.

Installed 2.6.29.6 to pc slave drive, full install. No problem.

Doesn't have any "ath_pci" drivers...a bit of a problem.

Gxine and Mplayer1rc2_412 work fine playing mp4 videos.

Inspiron 700m, Pent.M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb ram.
Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.
Eeepc 8g 701, 900Mhz, 1Gb ram.
Full installs

I still have to copy folder /lib/firmware/b43 from another puppy in order to make the b43 module works.

Great work Barry! :D

Please use the previous background, the puppy 4.3 one. It looks a lot more clean and professional than "superpuppy" IMHO. I liked the previous theme better also.

Medit still segfaults.

Gparted works on first boot. When I create a pupsave and reboot, it segfaults when I try to run it. Haven't tried this before so I thought I should mention it.

Puppy 4.3 Bugs and nitpicks:

- If you open the Puppy Package Manager and click inside the empty box (Installed Packages) below, you are prompted to uninstall a non-existing package named "
You can select 'YES' and complete the uninstall (LOL)

- Puppy 4.3 beta is still using an old build of JWM - you can't resize windows from the top :(

- Alsa Mixer and the other utilities are not updated (still at v1.0.16)

- Puppy 4.3 needs a cursor theme selector (as in 4.2)

More feedback:

- The OSMO organiser included in 4.3beta1 is a bit old (0.2.0). The latest version is 0.2.6

- The Superpup wallpaper needs to go. The previous one was much better.

- GLightsOff is also a good candidate for removal - the game is not fun at all.

- 90% of the small (16x16) icons in the menus need a serious facelift. Most of them look archaic (4-color Windows 95 crap).

was able to use libflashplayer-10.0.32.18.pet from here (this gives fullscreen youtube)
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/AdobeFlashPlayer Now if I can get Openoffice and xaraLX working, I will be happy . . .

My old SFS for xaraLX and OpenOffice are not showing up in the bootmanager. I seem to remember this is a known bug? I renamed them with OpenOffice310_JRE_lzma_423.sfs (for example) but they are not showing up in the bootmanager. is something amiss?

Mr Crustacean,

Yeah, you surely missed something, Barry did that on purpose. Read his blog entry, few entries back. Any incompatible SFS will be not be listed and won't be attempted to load

Bum!
just been informed, so not a bug
A new SFS file needs to be created within 430, because 430 builds SFS files with version 4.0 of 'mksquashfs' and not version 3.3.

No SFS file built with version 3.3 of 'mksquashfs' will be usable with Puppy version 4.3 or higher.
