Anyone know why Linux, including Puppy can't use onboard NIC Subject description: MSI MS-6580, 845G-Max-L, version 1.0 motherboard |
|
Hello,
Yes, I even tried putting in several PCI NIC cards instead, but no luck getting online. Yet with the drivers from MSI the onboard NIC works with WinXPpro. The manual says it's an Intel 82562ET and Puppy does find it. Oh, the Knoppix LiveCD said it wasn't supported, but no reason, but they listed a slew of options from other Distros.
I'll probably pass it onto to a friend, but have to give her a KVM switch, so her old computer can be for Linux. I'd love to know what MSI did to the Intel NIC that it doesn't work. By the way, this was the first P4 socket 478 motherboard that Windows asked me to push F-Key #7 to install it.
On a slightly different thought, are there any good online ways to update a BIOS chip? I tried, but failed with the above mentioned motherboard. Luckily, it still worked and had the problem before I tried.
Thanks,
ChiJoan in Reno
Looks like others have problems, too:

hi ChiJoan
looks like either intel (82)557/559 or pro100 should work

I believe they are in the current Puppy kernel, so should work OK
this may help

oh ChiJoan, by the way I compiled it on 2.14X
so if you download 2.14X and install the package below then open a terminal and type depmod -a
then try it, it should work
2.14x can be downloaded at http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=42553

It will also be included in the 2.14X v9 release due out in 1-2 weeks.
