How to get Thinkpad T42 wireless working?

What works, and doesn't, for you. Be specific, and please include Puppy version.

How to get Thinkpad T42 wireless working?

#1 Post by Matthew David Healy »

I've not been able to get Puppy to work with the built-in
WiFi on my ThinkPad T42 laptop -- the drivers that came
with it are, surprise, surprise, Windows-specific. I've
read through the documentation and fiddled around but
no joy yet.

Anybody got Thinkpad T42 WiFi working under Puppy?
If so, how?

My current workaround uses a couple of these
http://www.netgear.com/products/details/XE102.php
Netgear
Wall-plugged
Powerline Ethernet bridges, one plugged into a wall socket
near my router and one plugged into a wall socket in this
room, so to the laptop it just looks like wired Ethernet.

Note that while these are transparent to Linux, the utility
that sets up the encryption passwords is Windows-only.
Once setup is finished, Windows is no longer needed.

Wireless setup wizard?

#2 Post by jimj »

Have you tried the wireless setup wizard? That tells you what you need for ndiswrapper which lets you use your Windows drivers in Linux. The other alternative is to figure out which wireless card you have and install its native Linux driver. Quite a few drivers are available here: http://mymirrors.homelinux.org/puppy/wireless/

Help us to help you.
Of all the information you provided, you didn't tell us what wireless hardware is inside your laptop.
Some manufacturers treat their customers disrespectfully by not providing this information in their user manuals. If this is the case, run "dmesg".

How to get Thinkpad T42 wireless working?

I realize it has been a while since this thread was active; here it is anyway.

I had a few Thinkpads in my past, most of them reconditioned. Those I usually upgraded to a newer, fatter, more vunerable version of Windoze. (Usually the first one (Win OS) is free, you do the analogy from the getting sucked in perspective.) Sometimes I dual-booted them. I always had great luck going to www.ibm.com and going thru endless menus to find drivers for any of the OSs/versions I had loaded onto the notebook, for the exact model I was using (like T42 or T22). That included various Windoze and Linux versions and distributions.

If you haven't solved this driver delima already give it a shot!

T42 wireless works perfectly

If you have a T42 with Intel wireless it should work. Take a look at this discussion on the forum: http://www.murga.org/%7Epuppy/viewtopic ... highlight=
