kismet-2011-03-R2 - wireless network detector and more

#1 Post by DPUP5520 »

Kismet is an 802.11 layer2 wireless network detector, sniffer, and intrusion detection system. Kismet will work with any wireless card which supports raw monitoring (rfmon) mode, and (with appropriate hardware) can sniff 802.11b, 802.11a, 802.11g, and 802.11n traffic. Kismet also supports plugins which allow sniffing other media such as DECT.

Kismet identifies networks by passively collecting packets and detecting standard named networks, detecting (and given time, decloaking) hidden networks, and infering the presence of nonbeaconing networks via data traffic.

Kismet can be found here (the newest version exceed's the forum's size limit):
http://www.mediafire.com/file/9mbnih9iv ... -03-R2.pet

I'm also including a pet for the version of Kismet right before the newest release as it's a little easier to set up for those whose cards aren't auto-detected.

I tried the 2011 pet.
My network isn't seen.
I tried in spup 120.

Not obvious to see how to set it up, but as I understand it should auto-detect the network.

@Béèm

Kismet requires manual configuration of your capture source in order to be able to see wireless networks, only Backtrack and a few custom versions of Ubuntu are able to automatically configure and detect all network cards through a script that was created by remote-exploit, I have not included this script in the pet, however you can easily figure out how configure your card, to do this use the documentation for Kismet, I personally use the older pet which I have posted here as it has been working for me for a long time and i've had no problems with it, however I did test and verify the new versions and it does work but like I said the older pet is easier to set up and may be best for you as the newer one had me confused for a little while when I was trying to set it up as they completely revamped the kismet.conf file.

First thing I found out, that there were missing libraries.
I could solve that by making symlinks, as in fact the libraries did exist.

I could then indicate my network device.

But I got messages that no networks are seen.

I'll try the 2009 version.

BTW, I made a sfs for Kismet 2011, as I don't like to install pets.

I'll check out the library links issue , it may just be spup as I don't remember that problem popping up. As for your network not being found I don't know what that could be but i'll definitely look into it and let you know if I find anything.

The missing links are for libpcap, which is in /usr/lib, but not the symlink requested by Kismet and the one for libprce.

Those are the two only ones.

Help!

#10 Post by HarveyB »

Pretty much a newbie here, but I've tried loading both of the Kismet Pets listed above without success.

The install looks like it's going well, posts the notice to look in "Network" menu, and shows successful installation.
When I go to the Network menu, however, it isn't there.
Probably something stupid I'm overlooking, but don't know where to start looking!

Any help is appreciated!

Hello Harvey,

Google search "Kismet Tutorial"

I had this working in the 4.1.11 version of puppy linux. Here was my instructions for the 2008 version of Kismet.

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewt ... 1c3af86ad

I know that version changes of Software change the configuration file.
You could download the etc_kismet.tar file and compare it to your configuration file and see what is different or needs to be edited?
Edit the /usr/local/etc/kistmet.conf file to suit your needs.
Puppy runs as user "root", 2008 version of Kismet checked the user name and would not run as "root". So I had to add a user "fred" and make a home directory /home/fred. So that Kismet had a place to store its collected data.
open a ROX-Terminal or command line window UXRVT then at the prompt type kismet. Look for errors printed out to help you go further on.

Read the forum post above. Post what works for you including which version of Puppy Linux you are running. Good Luck with Kismet.
I just downloaded a version 5 release 2 of backtrack Linux and used the Gerix GUI tool to test my network using the Aircrack-ng tools.

Good luck with Kismet, Harvey. It helped me a good deal back then in 2008.
