What shall I work on first for the next CE release? |

I have already started working on some upgrades for 4.4 CE, but wanted to get an idea of what people really want. Please fill out the poll or vote with your post.

how about "assigning developers to bugs, upgrades and improvements."

Update:
The project suggested by Raffy, accepted by Project leader Technosaurus is now known as Woofy
The below idea seems to not have support and a full 'ready and usable' browser will be available in 4.4
--------------------
We have two browsers in Puppy - that is one too many
As the first 'upgrade' or config that people make is to change
the browser, I would suggest 4.4CE comes with the excellent
Puppy Browser also in 4.3
(if MU would like to/has time to improve for CE4.4 even better)
and an HTML page or other option to upgrade to a large browser
of choice if required.
Eg. Welcome to PuppyBrowser created in the Puppy supported
Vala language by MU
It is sufficient for most simple browsing needs including:
1. downloading family friendly porn
2. sending bank details to Eastern European gangs
3. offline browsing
Press for the following browser to be installed
Firefox
Opera
Seamonkey
Seamonkey Beta
Flock
Chrome Alpha
Internet Explorer (includes Wine and a mental checkup)

Puppy browser depends on gtkmozembed (part of seamonkey and firefox) I have tried to strip down the gtkmozembed from seamonkey and firefox and still make it work - you really can't strip too much the way it is built. I looked around to try and figure out how to build just the gtkmozembed, but development is kind of stale and there is little info.

I think puppy should simply come with dillo as the standard browser and allow the user to easily add whichever 'real' browser they want. dillo could then be used as just the internal help browser. Really, it's so tiny, but still capable enough to let a newbie browse the repos and find the full-featred browser they want.
I have a patched version of dillo which uses GTK2 -even though the GTK1 version has more features. I don't like the new fltk dillo at all.

A shame
Dillo would be an option.
Early Puppys only used Dillo
There are other small browsers.
eg: Netsurf

In terms of pets/sfs's, one thread keeps coming back, and that's openoffice.
This may not be particularly puppyversion-specific, but in an updated file repository, it might be helpful to find different versions of openoffice readily available, and including some stripped-down versions, say, an swriter version, but sans spreadsheet, pp, etc.
Again, I realize this may not be what you're looking for in this thread, but openoffice, with all its horns, raises its head with the release of every puppy version. It'd be nice to get ahead of it, rather than catch up.

GTKdialog gui for universal installer is really what most users would want, tons of times people get so confused how to install puppy, It just is very confusing to most people, I must of read about it like 30+ different times. A simple to use and understand puppy universal installer would be great.
oh Firefox 3.5 doesn't use gtkmozembed technosaurus they dropped that unfortunately, not sure if Seamonkey 2.0 uses it or not, I'll look next time I download it.

Based partially on the number of queries we get here from new-comers, anything that can be done to improve the Puppy Universal Installer would be welcome. Including taking into consideration reports that the grub stanza offered is often incorrect
Also I strongly disagree with having just Dillo as the initial browser. Connection to the internet is so important these days that not having a quality, flexible and highly capable browser as standard seems to be such a negative stance.
Cheers
Dave

Suggestions... Subject description: A multi-prong approach? |
|
I voted for compiling new software; but whatever path you choose is fine.
I was thinking that expanding the software base would attract more people...(draw new/more talent perhaps?)...
Of course, you could just delegate this out to others...while you work on something else...(more pressing/important/critical what have you)...
Also, perhaps as a nudge in direction...may I suggest thinking... (wait-for-it)...NETBOOKS!!! Puppy is a great fit for the ubiquitous hardware. Ensuring Puppy works with them all...(as best as possible) would also attract many users...
What do you guys think...?

Dear technosaurus,
I second the motion of a nice netbook version - with proper driver support, and a full dev environment in sfs form that also includes qt4 and qt3 libs, python, etc.etc. As for applications, one browser (firefox or opera), claws or sylpheed for mail, a keyboard language status indicator and trix - or something like it, which I use to transfer files and messages from one machine to another. Mtpaint as a graphics app would be fine for starters, with Gimp and fotoxx available as pets. I made a personal icewm-based version based on 4.10, but it is indeed huge - some 3 GB - because of my apps and libs. There is bloat there.
With kind regards,
vovchik

Moving from Seamonkey to Firefox. My bet.. folks spend more time staring at their browser than any other piece of software they have, so give them one of the best.

Yes Don't get rid of a full browser, this isn't a cutdown version, Man If I ever get to head up a CE release I would make it 120MB the cutoff, Its not a regular puppy version you know, it doesn't have to stop at 105MB, I seriously would add a small gimp version, Maybe a VLC and if VLC would be use, Then the QT interface for it and probably Opera, But I would add that Opera hack I added to one of my Alpha testers, where it lowers the tab button under the navigation buttons, Opera is plain stupid having the tabs up so high, it doesn't feel natural to use it like that, all tabs should be just above the page, like all other browsers and text editors, well the good ones anyways:)
You see if QT was used with Opera and VLC that would save a lot of space and open up this version to some great small QT apps, plus I have that QT fonts patch I figured out that sets all the QT fonts to same type, so all the apps looks just as good as a gtk ones do That would be cool and would be around 120MB (Gimp,Opera,QT,VLC). I also wouldn't mind seeing xfce without thunar but with rox, now that would take some real thinking, I really don't like thunar, its large and confusing when your used to rox. But the code would have to altered to compile without thunar. Well In the past I've manager to compile almost every xfce app without thunar.
