Just in case is of any use to anyone ( ) WiFi access is OK now but only with open access points. Encrypted APs still fail.
The next problem is that there is no sound and the alsawizard just launches and quits with a bunch of errors.
Finally, hardware scan identifies components but does not know what they are or what module to use.
I think that HAL may be at the root of all these issues. But then again...

Mavrothal asked about my use of the initrd and pup_412.sfs files.
I am trying to do an all-in-memory construct (is this what is called a "frugal" install?), so as to get some speed.
In initrd there is almost no XO present except for the modules compiled with the new kernel. "init" in initrd is from puppy with a few lines tweaked.
pup_412.sfs is unsquashed with squashfs-tools, XO's newly compiled kernel and modules are inserted, and the .sfs file is re-squashed and on boot copied to tmpfs in ram. I have unsquashed => tinkered => resquashed => rebooted about a gazillion times now trying to get the darn thing to make a window for me! Tinkering has consisted of such things as using XO's xorg-dcon.conf in lieu of puppy's xorg.conf, and moving the XO's amd and endev drivers over to the puppy.
But so far no luck in getting a window.
I downloaded the uPup-451 and booted it from CD on my desktop. It must not have liked my n Vidia C 51 GeForce 6150 LE, because even after several tries it would not run X-windows. It did however like Xversa, and had no problems with my wireless.
For the heck of it I tried the pup_451.sfs with the XO_pup/kernel_initrd, and it said "panic" at switch_root.
A question for some of you old hands out there: what mode of video support is in effect while xorgwizard is soliciting one's choices for xorg, xversa, resolution, etc?

That's very interesting eowens2
Could you upload your init script here to take a look? Better yet a diff fileeowens2 wrote: In initrd there is almost no XO present except for the modules compiled with the new kernel. "init" in initrd is from puppy with a few lines tweaked.
Did you "remaster CD" or manually squashed the whole thing?eowens2 wrote:pup_412.sfs is unsquashed with squashfs-tools, XO's newly compiled kernel and modules are inserted, and the .sfs file is re-squashed and on boot copied to tmpfs in ram.
but do you get the Xserver going on the full install or is a problem there still?eowens2 wrote:I have unsquashed => tinkered => resquashed => rebooted about a gazillion times now trying to get the darn thing to make a window for me!
I do not think this is going to work. Did you try any of the geode driver pets from here instead of the OLPC ones. 2.10.1 if I remember correctly was working fine on the XO (the fedora version)eowens2 wrote:Tinkering has consisted of such things as using XO's xorg-dcon.conf in lieu of puppy's xorg.conf, and moving the XO's amd and endev drivers over to the puppy.
I'm not an old hand but I believe is using the frame buffer.eowens2 wrote:A question for some of you old hands out there: what mode of video support is in effect while xorgwizard is soliciting one's choices for xorg, xversa, resolution, etc?

also I don't have any faith in touch screens, I think the XO 3 version is a terrible idea.
I'll be around for version 1 but I don't think touch screens are handy enough compared to a working keyboard, for one thing think about what the people in poor countries are going to use to clean a screen like every day, they won't be able to afford the cleaning products, then you think is water-proof etc.

Yep!I was feeling rather sad also Mavrothal to see this issue not being raised for some time. But didnt have the heart to pinch ttuuxxx either knowing very well the loads of stuff he's adding to the world of puppies. While I was going through the OLPC news section I came across this OS called Xtra Ordinary OS especially designed for XO laptop. ttuuxxx, why don't you jump over there a bit also if you haven't done that yet. Perhaps you might catch something useful there. And mavrothal, why can't we seek the help of Barry in this issue, well at least just to see what he can do with woof in this particular matter. If we are not sure of anything in either Puppy or Woof I guess he should be the man to turn to.

Next week I'll try to get Quirky running on it, Since that is the smallest woof version and the latest.hailpuppy wrote:Yep!I was feeling rather sad also Mavrothal to see this issue not being raised for some time. I have noticed your progress with quirky Indeed looks like the right choice for the XOpup.ttuuxxx wrote: Next week I'll try to get Quirky running on it, Since that is the smallest woof version and the latest.

So for next (Huppy New ) year ttuuxxx, have you decided on the kernel to use? Is it going to be vanilla BK's patched or OLPC's? As I said before olpc's 2.6.3x still have problems but I do not know if the last 'official" 2.6.25 is patchable.
Anyway, enjoy the sun till next year
Xtra Ordinary as well as DEBorah are DebXO variants. They are OK but they do not have the speed that is expected fom the well functioning XOpup. As alternative OSs for the XO is going, Teapot's Ubuntu 8.10 is the best speed-functionality-stability-ease of use OS, I believe.hailpuppy wrote:Yep!I was feeling rather sad also Mavrothal to see this issue not being raised for some time. Now regarding BK a) I'm sure he has seen this and has decided on his priorities b) I'm sure he has faith in ttuuxx (as we all ) and c) I'm sure that if his help is requested on a specific issue that he has the expertise on he will be willing to help. of course I have been wrong many times in my life
Finally regarding XO-3, 4, 54... is all vaporware, not even the hardware developers knew anything about it... They are still trying to get XO-1.5 out that still needs one more revision before production begins.
Hi ttuuxxx! Hope you're enjoying the Aussie summer.
Hey, quick question... I noticed an XOpup iso in one of your directories.
Is this a working copy? Is this the result of the work you have done so far?
Are we missing an "announcement"?
Cheers and please let us know if this is work in progress (no matter how long it takes).

No doubt! I have seen some of the activities in the forum. And more importantly, the holidays with the family as well!
I'll continue monitoring this thread. My girfriend's 8 year old is driving me nuts, hence the follow up.
Take care and enjoy the summer! I'll touch base every now and then to see how things are going.
Cheers!
