Good question

I'd answer by saying, 'It depends on the use you are going to put it to and location'

At home I have broadband, but occasionally test wifi - but only 54G not N

When I visit friends I often find they have N routers so I can get faster connections using an N dongle

I also spend a lot of time traveling, or on a boat so have a 1 watt [High power, with booster aerial] dongle for that, which also does N data rate, and with good long range connectivity

I prefer dongles that use Ralink chipsets, as they seem better supported

Of the 'mainstream' dongles, often supplied with routers, I might surprise some, but I wouldn't buy/use Belkin, as I had no end of trouble, with poor connections and dropouts, but found Linksys to be OK

This is a useful page for anyone asking the same question

Thanks for the links, Aitch.

It occurs to me that a table of what is known to work (and what it takes to make it work), and under which Puppy systems.

Fresh fodder for PLUG.

I helped Jason do this, quite some time ago

Don't know if it's being maintained?

I'm trying to get the idea of database access for the forum sold in PLUG thread....there's a lot more than wifi info needs collating

So it appears that this _might_ be a candidate... I don't find anyone using Puppy who has tried it, but it's listed as supported by Linux (and cheap).

Maybe......maybe not.

Also:
Contrary to Aitchs' experience; I have Belkin usb dongle, pcmcia, and
router that work very well, and have had problems with Linksys newer
routers.

Inspiron 700m, Pent.M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb ram.
Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.

wireless / wifi cards confirmed to work in puppy

I use this wireless adapter(tp-link tl-wn722n) in PCLOS. It has drivers built in to the newest kernels(2.6.38). It uses the ath9k_htc driver and also needs the firmware. I haven't been able to use it any of the Puppy Derivatives. It gets great reception.

Well, that's not good (since that is indicated as working under Linux)
Also:

I've generally had good luck with Belkin, also.

Which particular model for the USB? As I suggested, I'm thinking about buying one, just to have it on hand.

So it's not a case of making one work, I want to buy one known to work.

Retro;

Working with Puppy and working with some other Linux are not
always the same thing.

We are very much dependent on the great efforts of Tempestuous
when it comes to making the new devices work.

He will often have drivers for Puppy before the large distros have
a new device working.

My Belkin usb is:
F5D7050 ver.4000 802.11g, zd1211 chip (zydas)
Uses zd1211rw in Puppy; works great in everything after 4.0.
Not Tuuxxs' 214 though.

I like to watch craigs list for bargains.

Inspiron 700m, Pent.M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb ram.
Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.
Eeepc 8g 701, 900Mhz, 1Gb ram.

In one link I gave is a fairly current full list........

http://linux-wless.passys.nl/query_alles.php

Just look at the usb entries, then check with well-minded search, using both make and model/number, and chipset as separate searches

Any that cause problems will soon show up, as should those which are kernel/puppy version specific

It's really a case of taking a calculated risk, as looking at the F5D7050 example shows 5!! different versions and 4 different chipsets! [there may be more by now?] - some puppy versions just don't like certain dongles, and require additional drivers or tweaks

The only card I own that was even slightly risky was a Belkin F5D7050
ver.4001 802.11g cardbus. Madwifi. (atheros)
Purchased new for $30.00; from a local store and could have returned it if it didn't work.

There are many cards recommended in the Puppy forum; but the
info provided is sketchy and unreliable in many cases.

If it says it works "out of the box" with an "official" Puppy release
it's worth looking at.

Puppy versions before 3.01 >4.0 had spotty usb support and the
same for pcmcia on even earlier Pups.

It wasn't until the latest version of Ttuuxxs' 2.14x that I could get any
wireless on that pup and it still doesn't work with my usb dongle.

The ath9k_htc wifi driver is available for Fluppy013, as I reported in April -
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 411#513411

And forum member pemasu is just recently setting up the ath9k_htc driver in several other Puppy derivatives - Snow Puppy, Midnight Sun Puppy, Polar Puppy, and Ice Puppy.

Just an update: I have been able to get TP-Link TL-WN722N to work in Luci529(Three-Headed Dog). I needed the ath9k_htc firmware pet provided by Tempestuous. If there is any way to get this setup to work in older puppies that would be great! My computer is a Dell Dimension 4100 (circa 2001). Great job Tempestuous!!

High Power wifi adapters

For anyone looking for long range/distance wifi, I recommend Alfa.

Image
Courtesy robotz.com

They do 500mW, 1W, and 2 Watt devices, all using varieties of ralink chipsets supported directly by most puppy versions, or add-in dotpets

e.g

Alfa AWUS036H 500mW USB 802.11b/g WiFi Adapter
[$20 Amazon/cheaper on ebay]

This device has been updated to 1 Watt in later versions, using the same chipset [RTL8187L]

Image
Courtesy: forum.aircrack-ng.org

The original Alfa AWUS036H is 292 mW output; but the heatsink has been increased, as shown; add the included 2 dBi antenna and you have about 500 mW EIRP. Swap that for a 5 dBi antenna and you have 1000 mW EIRP (adding 3 dB, doubling the radiated power). If you put an 8 dBi antenna on, you've got 2000 mW, and with an 11 dBi antenna you'd be at the maximum FCC-allowed limit of 4 W EIRP. And giving yourself a headache or temporarily frying your family jewels.

Also there is AWUS036HN, 500mW 802.11b/g/n, using RT2770 RT2750 chipset/driver

Then there's a 2Watt AWUS036N/NHR, 802.11g/n, using RTL8188RU, and supplied with 5dB/9dB/panel aerials, according to supplier....for even longer/directional range use, [higher EIRP by change of aerial gain]

The highest power I have found, [and legally allowable] apart from adding questionable legality booster amplifiers, using usb adapters, is a Netsys 980000N, 802.11N type adapter with a massive 4200mW output power, with twin 9dB aerials giving a massive 45+dB signal gain over the usual 32mW usb devices - uses RT3070/rt3370sta driver
This device should give several kms range, more, if mounted high or with an add-on yagi or panel aerial [adapters may be needed, to connect]
Bonus is, it's about the same price!

Wardriving anyone?

Have fun....

Aitch,
Do you own an "Alfa AWUS036H"? I using the one with the " RTL8187L " chip, 1 watt.
It wont let me surf with the Linux driver, but its works great with ndiswrapper!

One bad thing I notice, is Micowave ovens like to make it lag . My other cards were ok with it.

Yes, I have got one of those Alfas, and the RT8187L driver works fine.....[as in lupu/525/528, dpup484 and a few others]
I've never used ndiswrapper for anything.....it's sort of cheating....

DLink DWL-G630 wireless pcmcia adapter

#91 Post by PenguinPupLin »

My wireless pcmcia adapter,DLink DWL-G630, is not detected(no modem available),didn't even show in hardinfo.I'm running Classic Pup214X-TOP9 frugal installed on my Acer Travelmate notebook(since 2002),cpu 1.6GHz,512MB RAM,ALI chipset motherboard,80GB harddisk. Really hope you guys can help me to get it working as I'm about to give up as most of the Puppy Linux distros didn't work properly for this notebook(usually screen and touchpad no tapping, wireless networking problems) except Classic Pup214X-TOP9 and Quickset Wary511(this one works well, including the wireless networking) but I kind of like 214X better.
Edited: My wireless pcmcia adapter is now detected after I followed tempestuous' advice to update the rt61.sys driver, except that I'm still unable to establish a wpa connection, probably due to my ISP max 6 connections limitation;however blinky network status info showed that it was connected with sent and receive packets, just that the web pages won't load. Wonder whether it has anything to do with the wpa_supplicant.
Latest: It works after I changed wpa2 to wpa+tkip encryption on wlan0 configuration in Puppy, now my wireless wpa connection established.

Two reports:

PCMCIA Trendnet TEW-441PC (11g card) works in Lupu 5.25 (Retro)

USB Trendnet TEW-424UB works under 5.20 and 5.28 (I believe I tested both, I'm sure that I tested the former -- I didn't yet try it under 5.25, but would guess it works).

Premeirtek "Powerlink Speedy2" Is working great! :D
Ralink 3072 chip
Its working in 528 , 528.004 and Racy 522 ( Racy needed the firmware file).

FYI: This is a high power usb b/g/n adapter with duel 5dbi antennas. Its the best $(28) you can spend if you want long rang and smooth videos streams.
I had to put my velco "ALFA AWUS036h (1watt 5dbi antenna)" to a window for a stable connection! This adapter sits on my desk working better! :)

I ripped a mini-pci ipn2220 wifi card off a broken wifi modem :!: . Installed it on my laptop, then tried Puppy 4.3.1 and ndiswrapper, but the connection was slow, high latency, and downloads wouldn't complete (wget stopped after 4-6 MB ). I used i2220ntx.sys version 2.10.3.2004.
Then I tried other version of inf and sys win files in Puppy Racy 5.2 and it worked very well, perfect downloads, stable connection etc. The version of i2220ntx.sys file I found to be stable is: 2.22.08.2004. Just search "2.22.08.2004" AND inprocomm in google to find the right Windows driver or try this link:
