Firedog 1.2 - a smarter, faster, more stylish browser suite
I just did a fresh frugal install of Barry K's Puppy 2-2.18 and installed Firedog.........it seems pretty impressive after just brief test.
Here's a screenshot......
Good job.....

Nice screenshot James, good to see Firedog working on an older Puppy.. Glad it worked alright!
If you just download Firedog as it is, it will almost certainly work fine..
Sorry, but this is not a re-compile... I took the 'Firefox_2.0.0.20.pet' , found on this site, and simply extracted it, did a manual edit and some customising of all the files contained within it, and repackaged the pet file..Anniekin wrote:sc0ttman, may I request the source code in order to compile it for my processor and try it out?

Flash 10 for Firedog
A Flash 10 pet has been added to the main post.
[update] Here is Flash 10 for all browsers:
Download flash_player-10.0.32.18.pet - works perfectly for me on Puppy 4.2, it's fast and works in fullscreen.
Note:
If you use other Flash pet files, you may need to move or copy libflashplayer.so into the /usr/lib/seamonkey/plugins/ folder.
I think the Flash lib may be moved in future Firedogs, when it comes out, as it will better support other browsers and Flash pets.
Anyone had problems with Flash after installing Firedog? I don't think anyone will, and it would only be a matter of linking the flash lib to solve any issues!

Thanks for the info...Rupp wrote:One reason for many to upgrade to FF3:

... The only reason it doesn't concern me is because I have edited those lists to be used in my hosts file.
Firdog also includes BlockSite, which is a simple but effective way of hiding lots of stuff you don't want to see..
If you could let everyone know how to edit these host files, or even make an updated pet, that would be very nice...

Re: New Firedog version available - Firedog 1.2
Hi scOttman,sc0ttman wrote:Firedog 1.2 is now available, and added to the main post.
I installed and ran Firedog 1.2 this evening, and gave it a quick try.
I liked that it managed to access my gmail account without problems (Opera 9.64 hasn't managed, though I understand there's a fix I haven't tried yet)
It also overcame some issues I've been having on Facebook.
On the downside, I don't see any option for importing bookmarks or passwords - is there one?
History is hard to find - maybe this is just a configuration issue, but a simple drop-down menu would be nice for a start.
More vexing is the lack of a built in Google Translate link. I had to set this up with major handholding in Opera, but in Seamonkey it's right there from the start.
I meant to write this with Firedog, but I didn't want to dig up my forum password.
I forgot to mention - Firedog made itself the default browser without asking, instead of giving me the option of putting a new icon on the desktop for it. Now I have to figure out how to get an icon for Seamonkey, so I don't have to crawl through the Start menu every time I want to use it.
I REALLY dislike that...

Yes, go to the Bookmarks Manager, found in 'Menu->Bookmarks->Organize Bookmarks'.otropogo wrote:I don't see any option for importing bookmarks or passwords - is there one?
Then you should find 'File->Import'.. This is what you're looking for.
History automatically appears in the address bar as you type, and can also be viewed with (Ctrl+H).otropogo wrote:History is hard to find - maybe this is just a configuration issue, but a simple drop-down menu would be nice for a start.
You will need to change your history settings in 'Menu->Edit->Preferences'
Firedog doesn't remember history by default.
Don't forget, you can TOTALLY customise Firedog!! So that it looks how YOU want..
Simply add a history menu item to the 'Personal Menu' (top-right) for extra quick access..
The 'Personal Menu' already contains some of your history, under 'Recently Closed Tabs'..
Search the bookmarks, it's already in there, in 'Go->Tools'.otropogo wrote:More vexing is the lack of a built in Google Translate link.
Firedog is intended to REPLACE the Seamonkey Suite so, yes, it makes itself the default browser.otropogo wrote:Firedog made itself the default browser. Now I have to get a desktop icon for Seamonkey
Edit /usr/local/bin/defaultbrowser and replace the word firefox with seamonkey.
Then you could just drag /usr/share/applications/firefox.desktop onto the desktop and rename as you like.

i just wanted to let you know I have been using firedog for a few days now on 4.31 and am very happy with it. It has handled everything I have done so far online very well.
Heres a question thats probably already been answered in the forum but how do I remove the seamonkey suite? I would rather just have firedog and save the space.
Thanks
EDIT: Nevermind, I found it .

Re: New Firedog version available - Firedog 1.2
First, glad it's working alright for you, sinc.
Your url about deleting Seamonkey will be added to the main post.
About future versions - 1.3:
I'll enable history by default, as a start...
But there's nearly nothing left to do with Firedog, in my opinion.. Just a few settings tweaks here and there... I'm sure it's stable..
If you disagree and have some feature requests or have found any problems that need fixing, let me know..
This could could include:
Moving the flash lib, adding/moving menu items, fixing PuppyBrowser, more useful extensions, etc..
I'll release 1.3 in a couple of weeks or so, around December 09...
So get thinking (and testing?)... Or don't.. It's up to you.

Yeah, sorry about that, with all the bookmarks, I don't need history.. Forgot I turned it off... I will update this in future versions...Rupp wrote:In 1,1 [history] was turned off as default and I had to turn it on through preferences. Which confused me at first because I thought it was set to clear history when I closed firedog. Then I realized the address bar history option. So I adjusted it. Just wanted to tell you it is off by default in Firedog.

Re: New Firedog version available - Firedog 1.2
Ok. It didn't delete Seamonkey, just took over as default, so that when you click on the browser icon on the desktop, expecting Seamonkey to run, Firedog opens instead.sc0ttman wrote:

In any case, when I upgraded to Puppy 4.3.1 yesterday, Seamonkey ended up as the default browser again. So that's not a problem for me anymore, though it would be nice to have a separate desktop icon for Firedog.
Ok. In the meantime, how do I turn it on?About future versions - 1.3:
I'll enable history by default, as a start...
1. how can I import bookmarks and/or passwords from Seamonkey? If you disagree and have some feature requests
2. how can I get Google Translate to run by means of a taskbar icon, keystroke or easily reached drop-down menu (as in Seamonkey)?
Google Translate is something I use every day, and it's a must have in any browser I use.

Re: New Firedog version available - Firedog 1.2
Sorry if this sounds lazy, but I covered all this in my last reply to you, found hereotropogo wrote:how do I turn it (history) on?

But to very quickly summarise and clarify, if needed... Firedog does indeed replace Seamonkey as the default browser.
Firedog doesn't delete Seamonkey.
Google Translate can be added nearly anywhere you want to put it!!
To import bookmarks, go to 'Menu->File->Import'.

It appears I went from my google mail link to the thread, didn't scroll the whole page, and mistakenly took your reply to sinc as a response to my post.
In short, I never saw your reply to me until now.
Thanks for your patience, and please accept my apology...
