New version of NPAPI (Linux) Flashplayer now available

#1 Post by Mike Walsh »

***NEW VERSION of the NPAPI Linux FlashPlayer***

Afternoon, everybody.

According to the Adobe blog page, the Linux version of the NPAPI Flashplayer, as used by FireFox, is now being updated in line with PepperFlash. The predicted date of mid-2017 for the end of support for the Linux Flashplayer has also been withdrawn. According to the blog:-
"In the past, we communicated that NPAPI Linux releases would stop in 2017. This is no longer the case and once we have performed sufficient testing and received community feedback, we will release both NPAPI and PPAPI Linux builds with their major version numbers in sync and on a regular basis."
https://blogs.adobe.com/flashplayer/201 ... linux.html

This being the case, I've downloaded the new binaries, both 32- and 64-bit, and have run up a couple of .pets. These will hopefully get everybody who wants to up-to-date. Both have been tested, and are working just fine. :D

(Pepper hasn't yet been updated to the new version; this is primarily an initial 'beta' release, although as stated, it appears to be working just fine.)

The new version is now 23.0.0.162, and the .pets are available from here:-

https://www.mediafire.com/folder/55ur67 ... ayer_.pets

Just select the version you need. I've informed OscarTalks, so he can update his series of FlashPlayer .pets, and also Geoffrey, so that he can make any necessary modifications to the Flash Auto-Updater.

Those of you running the Auto-Updater may find that you'll be updated to the new version in the normal course of events. It all depends on whether Adobe have been swapping URLs around again.....

On this one, at least, Puppy's ahead of the pack..!

I wonder how the "nag screens" will work. I am able to keep using 10.3.183.90 without it forcing me to update every few weeks (unlike 11.2), maybe the same will be possible with 23 beta, or even 23 stable once they focus on updates to 24 only? I think it only works in 10.3 because it was before they implemented the "forced updates" thing around 11.2.202.300ish, or maybe not.

Hi Sailor.

Yah; I think you're probably right, mate! I don't tend to use FF very much, but I came across this on BC this morning, and thought the membership had a right to be informed, and given a choice as to what they wish to do.....

Anyway, if you're running Geoff's auto-updater, it can be set to run at boot. Totally automatic, apart from a single click. I've been using it ever since the final version, many months ago.

The decision is entirely up to the individual, old son. I'm not twisting anybody's arm; merely providing the information.......and a choice. :D

Thanks semme,
I had to look up nm command.

Mike, nm command is used to examine binary files (including libraries, compiled object modules, shared-object files, and standalone executables) and to display the contents of those files, or meta information stored in them.
Here semme is showing version of his libflashplayer.so.

Ah, thanks for that, DJ.

Much as I appreciate Semme's presence on the Forums, his replies sometimes leave me a wee bit bewildered..!

I think the word I'm looking for here is 'cryptic'.....

You wouldn't be the first to have made that comment, Mike.

Maybe I watch too much Jeopardy? :D

Nah, I'm offering exercise..

Thanks for testing, ally. This is what's needed, after all; this is still a 'beta' release, and Adobe say they do need feedback to help crystallize it into the stable version.

Appreciated.

It works fine for me with streaming audio. I haven't so far tested it with video, FF not being my browser of choice.....but I'll be trying this out a wee bit later this evening, and shall report back myself.

Yes, when playing Guitar Flash on Facebook, Flash 23 sometimes stuttered too, or my keystrokes didn't respond, not good when you are competing and the lag moves you down from 1st place to last. Maybe it's because it's still in beta as Mike said or just doesn't like old hardware or being used on an older Firefox or just a coincedence. Maybe I can convince other players to use Flash 23 beta as well so they can have the same problem and I'll still win

"nm" needs the devx, I edited the way I get the version info with the updater of mine, so that it isn't dependent on the number of numerals in the string, now it should work with any libflashplayer.so

Works with pepper flash too, just need to find "libpepflashplayer.so"

Code: Select all

LIBFLASH=`find /usr -type f -name 'libflashplayer.so' | head -n 1`
awk '/LNX / {gsub(/\,/,".",$0);print substr($2,1)}' $LIBFLASH | awk -F'[^[:digit:].]*' '{print $1}'

Nice addition Geoffrey.

The average Joe could just as well extract what they need from the "binutils" pkg..

I have done a new frugal install of puppy 4.31 installing my palemoon-26.4.0.1-p4-glibc219tweak.pet. At first use flashplayer 23 beta does not work and the plugin is not recognized. I have palemoon's profile in /mnt/home. I booted another puppy where i successfully installed the flashplayer 23 beta and it was there. I rebooted puppy 4.31 and then the new flashplayer plugin was recognized. The phenomenon is reproducible.

I have a hack to use flashplayer 23 beta in puppy 4.31. Boot racy or another puppy where the new flashplayer is working. Start palemoon. Close it. In the profile of palemoon copy pluginreg.dat as pluginreg.dat.racy. Boot now puppy 4.31. At first start of palemoon with the same profile the flashplayer works. At successive starts delete in the profile pluginreg.dat and copy pluginreg.dat.racy as pluginreg.dat before starting palemoon.

EDIT: flashplayer 23 NPAPI definetively works with palemoon glibc tweaked in puppy 4.31. The following updates are required:

http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pe ... 2.2-p4.pet

http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pe ... 8.3-p4.pet

Flashplayer 23 beta NPAPI requires glibc>=2.15. It does not work in old puppies without a glibc tweaking. In puppy4, wary and lucid I use palemoon glibc219tweak to get both palemoon and flashplayer 23 beta NPAPI working:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 777#918777

In lucid the standard .tar.bz2 palemoon works but not flashplayer 23 beta NPAPI.
