Puppy 430 and Netgear WGR614 v6 Router

#1 Post by mbridges1 »

I have modified the LAN IP setup on my router to have hostnames and static IP's for my Puppy 430 systems. One system is 192.168.1.3 Chichi and the other is 192.168.1.5 Izzie (my two female chihuahuas). The other systems on my network are: 1) Windows XP 192.168.1.4 MARTYS-LAPTOP, and 2) Windows Vista 192.168.1.2 DellDesktop. All have reserved IP's in my router with their hostnames specified. The Windows systems have been given static IP's just to make everything uniform. I have been trying for 2 weeks to get the Puppy hostnames to show on my router and this is all I have ever gotten when I display Attached Devices:
# IP Address Device Name MAC Address
1 192.168.1.2 DELLDESKTOP 00:1a:a0:00:45:b5
2 192.168.1.3 -- 00:12:17:52:6c:c5
3 192.168.1.4 MARTYS-LAPTOP 00:14:a5:5c:8d:5c
4 192.168.1.5 -- 00:12:17:52:6e:d1
I have installed NFSD-2.2 in the Puppy Package Manager on Chichi but not on Izzie. I have modified the /etc/hosts files only on Chichi and MARTYS-LAPTOP to show all systems in my network. Chichi has been able to access files on MARTYS-LAPTOP successfully through Pnethood, but nothing on DELLDESKTOP. Pnethood on both Chichi and Izzie are able to "see" the shares on MARTYS-LAPTOP, but none of the shares on DELLDESKTOP. Because they are both Windows (please excuse the profanity) systems, MARTYS-LAPTOP and DELLDESKTOP both see the shares on each other. I cannot escape the feeling that if only I could get the Puppy systems to register their hostnames with my router a lot of the connectivity issues may resolve themselves.

I have tried everything I have seen in any of the forum discussions to try to get MARTYS-LAPTOP to be able to use the printer and shares on Chichi unsuccessfully. One time I was able to get MARTYS-LAPTOP to "see" the printer on Chichi, but when I tried to send a file there to print it only returned an error. At this time, I am able to "see" the printer on Chichi from DELLDESKTOP but when I try to print to it I just get an error. I don't really care if the Vista system can see the printer on Chichi or not, but I desperately need MARTYS-LAPTOP to be able to use that printer! If I cannot get this connectivity working, I will have to abandon Puppy Linux.

I have Puppy 4.3.0, frugal install on Chichi and Full install on Izzie. Contents of Chichi /etc/hostname file is as follows:
# cat /etc/hostname
Chichi
My router shows Attached Devices:
# IP Address Device Name MAC Address
1 192.168.1.2 DELLDESKTOP 00:1a:a0:00:45:b5
2 192.168.1.3 -- 00:12:17:52:6c:c5
3 192.168.1.4 MARTYS-LAPTOP 00:14:a5:5c:8d:5c
4 192.168.1.5 -- 00:12:17:52:6e:d1
When I enter the hostname command on Chichi I get the following response
# hostname
Chichi
I really don't want to have to back out of Puppy, I like the O/S except for this connectivity issue. If anyone can give me some other ideas to try I will gladly try them. Maybe I need to change to a different version of Puppy?

Here is the error that I get on Chichi when I try to print from the XP system:
pending since
Fri Nov 6 09:28:13 2009
"unable to open print file: Permission denied"
Does anyone have any idea what I need to do to change the permission?

In this test, I had changed the Windows Advanced properties to Print Directly to the Printer, so at least we know that the print job is making it to Chichi. When I tried using the Spool option on Windows, the print job just sat there and didn't try to do anything.

Also, I have installed CUPS 1.4.1 on Chichi.

Now I am installing the CUPS 1.3.11 Pet install package instead to give it a try since it shows a panel to disable the password for printing.

Alright. Now in order to share published printers attached to this system, I need a userid and password!

Any ideas how to get around this? :? :?

Review forum stream

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 847#358847

to get a step-by-step of how I was able to print from Windows systems to my Puppy 430 system. I have still been unable to see the Puppy hostnames in my router and I am unable to see any of the Vista shares on either Puppy system, but at least I can now print from Windows systems to a printer connected to a Puppy system.

In a totally unrelated message stream I found the password for root is "woofwoof".
