How to add fonts to word processors in Slacko? Solved

#1 Post by jakobcornelis »

This is an issue I have never had to deal with before. My word processors have only a few (1/2 dozen) fonts available, running in Slacko 632. I need additional fonts - particularly seriff . How do I manage that?
By the way, in my previous version, Slacko 531, the fonts got totally screwed up; it was no longer usable. How does this work?

I install additional TTF fonts using this method

Some pup's I believe can install/use .deb files (with DebianDog I know you can download/convert a .deb into a sfs - that might be generic (usable in other pups)).

... a start at least.

Fonts - stored or downloads?

#3 Post by davids45 »

G'day,

Are you wanting to locate or save font files in Puppy, or to know where to get new font files to use in Puppy?

My font files are stored in /usr/share/fonts/default/ in one of a few sub-directories there.
The main sub-directory/path is /TTF/ to the actual TTF files which have the extension .ttf.

A word-processor package may want its own font sub-directory but I find most programs will find the ttf fonts in the default location.

I think .ttf files are not platform or OS specific so try Google for TTF fonts and download the .ttf files of the fonts you find interesting and save them in /usr/share/fonts/default/TTF/ and see if your program then finds them and they are suitable. If not, delete them and try some more.

I have several hundred .ttf files in my fonts directory most of which I think I just copied from an old version of MS Word. There are a few Puppy specials as well, like pdingobats.ttf.

As some programs may become unusable if a particular font goes missing, make a back up of the font directory during your regular data back-ups.

Good luck,
David S.

Hi, jakobcornelis.

1) I'm offering a nice collection here:
https://augras.eu/documents/ws-default/ ... tch/Fontes
including the great classics (complete), Liberation and DejaVu

2) The good people at Arkandis Digital Foundry have created beautiful
ones: http://arkandis.tuxfamily.org/fonts.html

3) PM forum member Moat? He has included a very diverse collection of
fonts in his Pups. Maybe he can give you the URLs he got them from?

If you're really keen on exploring fonts:
4) https://speckyboy.com/best-free-fonts/ (very recent list [May 4])
5) https://www.fontsquirrel.com

To install a TTF font or similar on Puppy, please see the instructions here:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 470#953677

Have fun! :)

Copy or symlink your windows xp TTF fonts to /usr/share/fonts/default/TTF

OK: I think I know now how to deal with this. I"ll probably start with stealing the TTF files off the Windoze xp. Good thing I didn't get rid of it. Thanks nic007, musher0, davids45, and rufwoof.

I just drag n drop the ttfs into /user/share/fonts . Has been working for the last 7 or 8 years in puppys of all pedigrees.

I keep a folder of my 'basic' 45 fonts to copy as needed.

Now, is there a simple way to convert ps fonts to ttf on a puppy?
