No sound from Intel 8X0

I have searched high and low,and tried all suggestions, does anyone have a solution yet to the problem of this sound chip and alsa being unable to config properly? I am running latest puppy on cy25 laptop.

I know it is possible to get this working, but god almighty, i cant find out how to do it. Everything I try results in the same outcome......no sound. Got a system beep, and I had debian installed on the cy25 previously, with the same problem. I did manage to get sound working on debian, then lost it after a resboot, and was unable to get it going again. I heard alot of good stuff about puppy, but lets face it, without audio output, whats the point!!

Other Linux distros including Tiny Core Linux have had problems with Intel 8x0 sound chip and alsa in some PCs. For that distro it was resolved by tweaking alsamixer (don't know what the Puppy Linux equivalent is):

alsamixer wont work, the sound card is not being found. The sound chip is the sis7012. I have seen else-where that the i810 driver works for this chip. Any info anyone??

From reading several forum posts, I believe this is a conflict of modems that Rerwin is working on. However, from my own experience(s) on AC97 codec stuff (hda-intel hardware), muting some of the unused stuff in Alsamixer solved sound issues with Puppy 4.31 -- try muting the headphone first. (The 'm' key on your keyboard mutes and un-mutes each function selected; MM is muted, while 00 is unmuted.)

On earlier Puppy's (earlier versions of Alsa), a line had to be added to the bottom of the /etc/modprobe.conf file. The exact wording of this added line is dependent on your own hardware. I posted instructions for adding this line elsewhere in this Audio forum, but you'll have to do a quick search for it. Forum member Tempestuous, who is really the expert here, has posted about this added line in several places as well.

OTOH, if this is truly a case of your sound card not being found (I don't read code very well but I do see your soundcard 'snd_intel8x0' listed in your output), then my above suggestion is for naught.

Hi roy, thanks for your input on the matter. I have read post after post, in many forums across different distro's. The module appears to be loaded, but it is not picked up by alsa, and consequently alsa mixer will not start, and just returns the soundcard not found error.It seems the required modules load ok, but alsa cannot configure them? I have tried editing the .conf files, sometimes making a small bit of progress, sometimes not. Sometimes it is difficult to read all errors returned in the console, and they dont always get logged in the log files for some reason, any tips when running alsaconf?
How can I get in touch with Tempestuous? he sounds like the person who could solve this. Im not great at reading code, if someone could give me some pointers maybe?, Im determined to get to the bottom of this!

One thing I noticed, in my output previously posted, there are a number of snd references to oss. No mention of alsa. Is this right?

boo I dont know what fixed it

i got lazy with the rebooting, and only rebooted after a couple hours tinkerin'. Suddenly it was working, the speaker-volume icon showed up on the panel, and bingo alsamixer started , i unmuted and wahey! If any one is interested, i can post the changes made.

Oh and puppy linux is very good. Its very quick on this laptop, makes my sons dual core running vista look positively slow

only me.
it has stopped working again. seems it was fine with a reboot, but a shutdown put an end to it. any ideas on what is affected by a shutdown but not a reboot. very odd.
the file :
/proc/asound/cards says 'no soundcards'
and in: proc/asound/modules is blank.
checking the list of loaded modules in the cosole, the relevant modules are loaded. alsa is not seeing the modules? who's fault? alsa or driver?
i also notice that in the oss folder, the oss is alsa emulation code. Im sure i saw something bad regards that. any ideas?
One more thing, in this line of code:
snd_intel8x0 29160 0,
what does tho '0' represent?
