ICANN to open up top level domains Subject description: Is it a Cancer in the Internet Namespace?? |
|
| Barry Leiba - IT Researcher wrote: | Last year, ICANN announced an “open season” on top-level domains, to start some time in 2010. This will dramatically expand the namespace for Internet domain names, and will allow cities, industries, and companies to register specific top-level domains for themselves......
.....I’m posting this here in part to spur discussion — some will, of course, disagree with what I say. Certainly, Peter Dengate Thrush, the current ICANN Board of Directors chair, disagrees, and I discussed this with him at the recent IETF meeting. Part of his opinion is that ICANN should not artificially limit the TLDs, but should allow the market to decide what’s appropriate.
I, on the other hand, think that opening things up is not a benign annoyance, but is actively harmful in a way that the market cannot cope with — akin to a cancer in the Internet namespace. |
