Unnamed puplet 1.1 (kernel-2.6.29.1)

#1 Post by MU »

This is an inofficial patched version of wows puplet:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=39154

I did not use Puppys buildsystem, instead modified the existing puplet by hand.

It uses Kernel 2.6.29.1, from here:
http://puppylinux.com/blog/?viewDetailed=00667

I used wows .config from 2.6.28.5 as a base, ran "make oldconfig" and answered the few questions that came up.
This kernel includes Squashfs4.
It does not yet support lzma compression.
It is incompatible with older squashfs files.

To convert old ones, place them in a temporary folder.
E.g. /mnt/sda1/test_411.sfs
Then type:
cd /mnt/sda1
unsquashfs34 test_411.sfs

This creates a folder squashfs-root.
Rename it to test-sq4, then type:
dir2sfs test-sq4
This creates a new test-sq4_411.sfs.
-----------------------------
I was NOT able to compile the better "aufs" unionfs driver, so slightly modified initrd.gz, to force the use of the original unionfs instead.
As we have bad experience with the reliability of older versions, I'm very unhappy with this.
We must have a very critical look on how it behaves with whiteout files.

-----------------------------
I compiled no extra-modules.
I simply renamed /etc/modules/firmware.dep.2.6.28.5 to firmware.dep.2.6.29.1.
So I don't know, if new firmware is handled correctly.

I uploaded also a re-squashed devx. The content is identical with the old one.
I added linux-2.6.29.1-sq4_411.sfs. This is pretty huge, as it includes the precompiled kernel and modules.
I was not certain what could safely be deleted, so packed everything.

I compiled a new fglrx module for Ati Catalyst 9.3. This required to apply a patch for the fglrx wrapper module. The patched source will be extracted to /lib/modules/fglrx/, once you installed the pet and activated it in the included patched xorgwizard.

I did not include other updates.
So mesa and other drivers are the same as in the original puplet.
I will release more graficsdrivers next weekend or earlier on request.

Download:
http://puppyisos.org/isos/2009-01-to-06 ... 6.29.1-MU/
User: puppy
password: linux

I did not check the checksums on the server, so please check them on your own after download.

Please let us know, if this kernel is an enhancement, or creates new problems.
If it has no advantages to 2.6.28.5, I'd prefer to stay with that one for a while, e.g. because of "aufs".

I do not plan, to maintain this puplet "as such", as it is wows creation, so please post requests concerning Ultrapup in wows thread. (I am too busy enough to fix the issues for NYP).
I just release this kernel for Ultrapup first, as this shall help, that both puplets stay compatible in future, and wow currently has no time to release a new kernel himself.

This thread here is just intended for issues related to the new kernel :!:

Sorry, Mark. This pup does not fix the slow network copy. It's excruciatingly slow on large files. (400 megabytes)

SlaxerPup, Fatdog, dPup, etc do not have this problem, it's a puzzle.

interesting.
So what additional software might influence this?
Samba?
ntfs3g?

Are the files located on a ntfs drive?
How do you connect to the other computer?

I use Pnethood to locate shares on the network. Then, it normally uses Rox to show the share (but as you may recall, I have tried other file managers). The shared drives are ntfs but the local drive that I copy from is ext3 usually. It could be something affecting Samba, but what? The best clue is that wow's first pup and yours up to RC3 worked fine.

Does Samba have to be compiled against the kernel?

Aragon's new pup based on the same kernel has lightning fast network copy. ???

then it might be a problem with the ntfs-3g as i did recompile it and MU (maybe) not?

i have a pet on my home-pc i could post, but i think it would be better if MU compiles it on this build as it might be configured other than mine (haven't had time to compare both config-files)

Aragon, please post the pet, so that we can compare different versions.

ok, here it is.
It seems to be not kernel dependent, so I compiled it in NYP02rc10 with Kernel 2.6.28.5.
If it solves the issue, we can update all ultrapups/NYPs with it.

I used this source:
http://puppylinux.com/sources/kernel-2. ... ilesystem/

yep, here they are. compiled on 2.6.29.1 same source.

I did (only) recompile it, as BK posted something about that for his standard-build. it's maybe to pick up the fuse-module of the running kernel...

i also attach the ndiswrapper i compiled against 2.6.29.1 maybe this is of use for someone...

I am willing to try anything, so I tried both pets -- neither has any effect.

My understanding of networking is that the destination computer handles mounting and working with the file system. I don't think ntfs-3g on the source computer (source of the file transfer) would even be involved.

there was another problem once with samba.
It opened many processes at the same time, when using networkcopy.
The solution was to install this archive:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... h&id=10445
Extract it in /lib/.
It is important, that it has executable rights.

Let me know, if it helps.
If not pleas type:
ldd /lib/libdm.so.0.0.4
If there is an error, please post it.

Thanks, Mark.

Extracted it into lib, checked permissions, rebooted.

No effect.

Here is the result of the command:

ldd /lib/libdm.so.0.0.4
linux-gate.so.1 => (0xffffe000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0xb7ea1000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0xb7fa2000)

comparing:
http://puppyisos.org/isos/2009-01-to-06 ... .6.29.1_MU
and:

CONFIG_CIFS_XATTR=y
CONFIG_CIFS_POSIX=y
# CONFIG_CIFS_DEBUG2 is not set
# CONFIG_CIFS_EXPERIMENTAL is not set
BUT:
also Kernel 2.6.27.5 from the first ultrapup has:

Code: Select all

# CONFIG_SMB_FS is not set
CONFIG_CIFS=m
# CONFIG_CIFS_STATS is not set
CONFIG_CIFS_WEAK_PW_HASH=y
CONFIG_CIFS_XATTR=y
CONFIG_CIFS_POSIX=y
# CONFIG_CIFS_DEBUG2 is not set
# CONFIG_CIFS_EXPERIMENTAL is not set
As 2.6.27.5 worked, this can not be the issue.

I also compared the files in /opt/samba and /etc/ and /lib/, but found no differences in the files, that should be involvd in samba.
At moment, I am clueless :(

Well, I am certainly more clueless than you.

I keep going back to what you said when you updated your pup to RC4. You just dropped in the kernel. You did not add any other of wow's files. So, it seems to me that it has to be in the modules or the firmware. Wouldn't those be the only file changes?

I read at bottom here about problems caused by a network card driver:
Link
OK... So it was a packet problem.
By comparing the old/new sfs, I see different sizes of the firmware archives.
/lib/modules/all-firmware/.

However, as aragon uses the same kernel-version, there also should be the same firmware.
So this also could not be the issue?

I will google a bit more.
Can you tell me, what network driver you use?
In the menu, start the "Hardinfo Hardware Information".
In it, click on: "Computer - Kernel modules".
Click on the list on the right, until you find one with "ethernet" in the description.
Then at bottom on "path", it has the location/name of the kernelmodule.
Please write it down here.

-Loaded Modules-

sky2 : Marvell Yukon 2 Gigabit Ethernet driver

/lib/modules/2.6.28.5/kernel/drivers/net/sky2.ko

Aragon mentions in his thread that he just renamed his firmware folder.

valid point :oops:

no! i'm using the ones from 2.6.25.16.

barry wrote something about firmware here
http://puppylinux.com/sources/kernel-2. ... atches.txt
i didn't understand that, so i decided to leave them as they are and think of it later.

so maybe here's something to look at?

Thanks Aragon, very important hint!

Techtype, sky2.ko itself seems to use no firmware.
Maybe one of the other modules needs firmware.
You could try to run without savefile.
Then click on the old ultrapup 1.0 pup_411.sfs to mount it.
Then copy the old /lib/firmware from the mounted sfs to the "real" /lib/firmware.
Then run the network wizard to set up the network card.
