BareBones431 Subject description: Heavy Application Removal |
|
I have been waiting for someone to release a bare bones version of Puppy431 but could wait no longer. So I have put one together myself:
http://puppylinux.ca/members/choicepup/BareBones431/barebones431-jrb1.0.iso
I have removed as many of the apps and their dependencies as I felt practicable, almost all. I left the sound libraries but deleted the video codecs, etc. There are a few non-working menu items, pdict, puppypdf and bcrypt which I could not find the pets for and decided to leave in case someone wanted to reinstall the functions.
I left the defaultprogram files and desktop icons as they were although now non-functional except for connect and console. You can modify or delete them as you wish.
There is an up to date list of included pets in /root/.packages/woof-installed-packages and a llist of the pets I removed in /root/.packages/woof-installed-packages-removed.
I intend to use this as the base for ChoicePup431 and have already installed the latest SFS-TCZ_Linker-431bk-1.2.pet and am playing with SFS and TCZ files.
Enjoy, J

This is very interesting and could be just what I have been looking, a very very cut-down puppy, with almost no apps, to use as a platform but with all the tools and drivers to make it installable to a wide range of hardware. Was looking to tinycore before this.
So I started to take off all the apps I didn't need and then realised that there wasn't a browser, which I do need.
So, based on what you have done to 431 which browser would be easiest to install, ie requires fewest dependencies. Had a look at seamonkey and firefox and both had a long long list of deps.
Grateful for any help
Dave

I'm typing this in BareBones431 with Opera10 ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/tinycorelinux/2.x/tcz/opera10.tcz with Qt4.5 ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/tinycorelinux/2.x/tcz/qt-4.5-base.tcz and flashplayer10 http://puppylinux.ca/members/choicepup/flashplayer10_070208.pet.
Opera doesn't recognize the later flashplayer10's unless the dbus libs from firefox are loaded but the older flashplayer10 that I use has worked flawlessly for me.
I loaded the .tcz files with http://puppylinux.ca/members/choicepup/ChoicePup431/pets/SFS-TCZ_Linker-431bk-1.2.pet but you could change the .tcz to .sfs and load them with Bootmanager or I think there's an sfs2pet converter on the forum.
There are also Opera10 pets and qt4.5 pets available in the forum.
Opera is also available as a tar.gz bundled with Qt4 from http://ftp.opera.com/pub/opera/linux/1010/final/en/i386/opera-10.10.gcc4-bundled-qt4.i386.tar.gz. Uncompress it in a folder, open a console and type ./install.sh

Congrats jrb this sounds great. Unfortunately I will need to wait for my next trip out of the jungle to download the iso - link speed here is very limited.
In reference to davesurrey's question, did I not understand what I read in previous posts? I thought the sfs files contained all the required dependencies, so could he not just link the firefox sfs? That is what I am planning on doing, will I run into problems?
Keep up the great work.
Chris

Ok, You caught me, I'm an Opera guy. Actually I just tried http://puppylinux.ca/members/choicepup/ChoicePup431/sfs/ch4-firefox-3.5.3.sfs and it worked just fine by itself. Firefox.tcz however is up to 3.5.7 and I was thinking of that.
I have to warn you that the ch4-sfs's were tested against ChoicePup430 and Puppy431 which have a lot of deps built in. There may be some missing deps when using BareBones431. If it's something that can't be found as a TCZ then I will consider updating, but I kind of like the idea of not having to build too many more SFS's. (Although the missing and misplaced menu items with TCZ's will probably get me going on it again soon.)
