EXE installer

#3 Post by sc0ttman »

Here's a fully-branded EXE installer for Puppy Arcade 6

Download Mirrors: http://www.multiupload.com/OYIO7ZJLP0
(filesize : 117mb, md5sum: 5703147a3464b2045094f9e3fb88b763)

Details:

This will install GRUB4DOS and modify boot.ini. This is important.
BACKUP FIRST!! Then...

Run the installer in windows. The installer will copy all files required for a frugal install install into your chosen folder. It also adds a menu entry into 'Add/Remove Programs', so it can be easily uninstalled.

After installation, you can then reboot and select either Windows or Puppy Arcade... :) This is not heavily tested, but it worked for me.

Limitations (READ THIS!):

This can ONLY be installed to your Windows partition, which must be either FAT32 or a fully-defragged and uncompressed NTFS hard drive.

I just got a new computer so I can play with puppy again. I decided to kick things off by taking a look at your latest project.

It looks pretty smooth, but then again I can only test in Virtualbox. The choice of apps is good

I am disappointed that you left my joke box in the misc. tab, but did not edit the text in the box. Without the dog picture it just will confuse people. That is the canine setting for the dogs. It needs to be clarified.

I will play more and report back. Until then enjoy a mirror.:)

I had no idea what that tab was for, so I left it. Your feedback will be appreciated.
This one should be a lot easier to use. And thanks for the mirror.

You can now create a bootable Puppy Arcade 6 USB pen-drive (USB stick) using Windows, with an easy wizard installer, created at pendrivelinux.com

Get it here:

Remastering CD iso

#9 Post by alastair_hm »

Is it possible to remaster the ISO so it will include the ROMs I have so I can play them on any computer?

Personally, I would just swap the Puppy Arcade live CD for a CD full or roms .... But yes, you can... Use the remaster scripts in either the control panel or the start menu. Choose 'simple' then follow the instructions and it will copy all your files into the new remaster...

You can also type 'pupremaster2' or 'remasterpup' int the terminal - they are different remaster scripts, both are included in Puppy Arcade.. One of them (Barry Ks, opens with the wider GUI) will not remember your all files in the new one unless you copy them.

Help!

#11 Post by fearofshorts »

Hey.
I'm a bit of a newbie to Linux (though I do have the basic understandings and a reasonably advanced knowledge of Windows), and I'm having difficulty with your Puplet.

When Arcade boots wbar it covers the entire screen. Wherever I move the cursor, wbar blows up the icon. I can't left or right-click on the desktop (or see it - I see just wbar and black).

But I can access the taskbar. Using this I can terminate wbar (and I have) but I can't figure out a way to change the way Arcade boots wbar. Neither the wbar config accessible from your control panel or the emulator desktop menu helped and I have no idea how to fix this or to disable the booting of wbar at startup. Can you advise me?

Also, the system I'm trying it on is very old (64 MB ram, a few hundred megahertz) but does work quite well with puppy linux and damn small linux. The resolution (if it matters) is 1024 X 768.

Thank you for creating this wonderful version of puppy and for reading my noob-ish wall of text!

I think you will not be the only person who experiences this. This is a problem on some bootups and was one reason for disabling the automatic loading of wbar on v5.. But lots of people said they wanted wbar to load as default in the next one. Hey ho...

It only ever happened to me on 800x600... A change of resolution always fixed this issue for me.

However, to disable wbar is quite easy...

open up /root/.xinitrc, and scroll to the bottom.. You'll find a line near the bottom that starts like this

Code: Select all

sleep 3 && wbar ...
Comment out this line, with a # at the start, and restart x.

So now it looks like this:

Code: Select all

#sleep 3 && wbar ...
Wbar can be started again through the start menu or with this command....

Code: Select all

wbar -config /root/.emubar -jumpf 1 -above-desk -pos bottom -offset 40 -nanim 3 -zoomf 1.5 -idist 6 -isize 42 -bpress -balfa 0 -falfa 100

It looks better thanks to afgs (wallpapers and new logo) and thanks to technosaurus - for providing a simple way of adding wallpaper without running a ROX desktop..

About the torrent, I'll see what I can do! Maybe today...

Has the internet been disabled or removed in version 6?
I've tried started Firedog from the menu but nothing seems to happen.

I've run the network setup which seems to function okay.

I have a frugal version of 6 installed on a ext2 partition now.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Err... Seamonkey is the included browser in this one.. And it should all work fine, nothing was removed that is required for internet. Did you install Firedog?

Having come from a Commodore background since the original PET I took an interest in this project for a nostalgiafest! I have some queries.

You say for Commodore stuff you need to add system roms. I tried C64 and it seemed to have Basic. What else does it need? I had a look at WinVICE2.0 and it mentioned the system stuff as kernel, basic and one other the name of which eludes me. Can I copy the files directly from WinVICE or have I got to go hunting for linux specific versions?

Searching for ROMs is a right pain for a newbie in this field. I tried your links looking for Commodore or Amiga stuff. Commodore stuff eluded me (except for the WinVICE). I found one reference to an Amiga Kickstart but it was a huge file, (for me on 2Mb broadband), made worse by the fact that it included all the various versions in one pack rather than splitting them. I guess it is difficult to get things that you are not supposed to have - but if you or others know of any DIRECT links to the various requirements it would help. Then we are not all searching (and failing) for the same thing.

When I ran the C64 emulator it came up in a small window. I guess this is because the C64 was a 40x25 character screen and at 8x8 pixels per character this is only 320x200 pixels. Is the only way to get a decent window size to reduce Puppy's resolution to the smallest (640 x 480) or is there a way to get full screen?

Finally, are there any links to sources of disk images that might be run with these emulators or a clue as to what we should search for? I realise this is not part of the project but it would help to get some something going quickly for the newbies in the field. As it stands I can see a c64 screen but I am not going to start typing BASIC or machine code in any great quantity to get something going.

First, I wasn't even crawling when half this stuff came out, so I can't be much help... but here goes...
ICPUG wrote:You say for Commodore stuff you need to add system roms. I tried C64 and it seemed to have Basic. What else does it need?
Puppy Arcade 6 includes 2 C64 emulators (frodo and VICE). Only vice requires the chargen, kernal (not kernel) etc group of files, which should go into their respective folders in /usr/lib/vice

More info: http://www.viceteam.org/vice_4.html#SEC25

Note: Frodo will work out of the box. type 'frodo' in the terminal to run it.

If I could offer direct downloads without a load of people filling this thread with complaints, then I would, even if people simply downloaded the stuff they actually owned..

But here's some commodore stuff http://depositfiles.com/en/folders/0CSWZ48PY

These might be the Amiga files you want.. http://www.filestube.com/805592ac52cf15 ... l-Ami.html

See the emulator help files online or in the /usr/share/man directory ( i think)
ICPUG wrote:Finally, are there any links to sources of disk images? ... As it stands I can see a c64 screen but I am not going to start typing BASIC to get something going.
I've never used a commodore... I'd search for commodore emulator specific stuff... That'll turn up more results... Search google - there's a surprising amount of commodore blogs out there from other old people ;)

Also, when struggling to find files, get on btjunkie.org or piratebay.org and search there

Weird, Firedog definately appears on the menu, not installed it on version 6, I wonder if its picking up from another Puppy Linux save file or something?

I'll have another poke at it.

Thanks
