Subject description: Error message how do I solve it ?

Hi
I have been trying for a while to get my laser printer to work
I have tried a lot of the suggestions on the forum
I attach a .png screen dump showing what I get.
The set up is the same as I use with other Distributions on the same computer.
They all work fine . The message I get is "unable to open file "/var/spool/cups/d00012-001" -permission denied".
I cannot find what to do to change this permission?

I can ping the ip OK, also when I try the test print the printer starts up but no page comes out of it. Just the error message in Cups.
My cups version is 1.3.3 However when I enter cups-config --version I get version 1.1.23 returned. So don't know if there is any significance in that
Any suggestions would be very welcome
Thanks
Trev

Hmmm .....

I believe that you're running a puppy 4.1.x ... The cups-1.3.3 requires several modifications (which I couldn't remember anymore, I couldn't find my notes) to get it to work properly ... I suggest that you try cups-.1.3.11 which you can find here ...

If you do upgrade to cups-1.3.11, please uninstall cups-1.3.3 first ...

The CUPS 1.3.3 you got from the repo is untested and should be avoided. Because it appears to be conflicting with the original CUPS 1.1.23, I'm not sure how to get rid of it short of reinstalling Puppy.

Because you have a network printer, there is value in getting a more recent version of CUPS, so I would get Patriot's 1.3.11. It may auto-detect your printer.

What printer driver are you using? Read here for info on installing Brother printers.

Hi
Thanks for your swift response
I removed the 1.3.3 version and installed the 1.3.11 as suggested
All seemed to go OK
However I now cannot access the cups using either the printer setup wizard or the browser http://localhost:631/printers method. i just get the failed to connect message
I can still ping the address ok and also and I can access the printer maintenance by using the address http://192.168.1.65/printer/main.html

so any suggestions on this would ve much appreciated
Many thanks for your help

Open a terminal and type
Code:
/etc/init.d/cups status

Is CUPS running? If not, type
Code:
/etc/init.d/cups start

Now try to access the CUPS web interface through
Code:
localhost:631

This comment is on Patriot's installation page:

(note: dbus & ldap support requires dbus + ldap libraries.)

You could try uninstalling CUPS and reinstalling without ldap. It's not needed for basic CUPS functionality.
