How to use HP Officejet 6310 wirelessly? [SOLVED]
I am trying to configure my HP Officejet 6300 to work wirelessly. It is currently already setup on a network and working fine with a wireless windows laptop and the homebase windows PC. (Yes i know some of you have issues with that statement but my point is to let you all know it already is up and running and i do not want to undo all that to physically hook it up to this laptop)
I have Puppy 4.3.1 (complete puppy and linux novice btw)
I downloaded the hpijs drivers but I did not see this model number. Upon further research, i found this:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_print ... ceJet_6300
which seemed to indicate i needed the following driver package:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_drive ... iver=hplip
All fine and dandy but when i clicked on Download, it asked for which distrobution I have, Puppy was not listed. (Boss, Debian, Fedora, IGOS, Limpus Linux, Linux from Scratch, Linux Mint, Mandriva Linux, Mepus, PCLinuxOS, Red Hat, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE, Ubuntu, gOS)
Am I out of luck?

Not at all.Am I out of luck?
There are two choices for installing your printer - HPLIP packages have both print and scan functions, but are bigger. HPIJS packages just have print capability, but are smaller.
In either case, you may be better off upgrading the version of CUPS that comes with your Puppy 4.3.1. Go here and get CUPS 1.3.11. That page also has a link to the HPLIP packages.
If you just want HPIJS drivers, go here. It requires CUPS 1.3.11.
[Edit] On the other hand, this HP site doesn't list your printer at all.

Oops I have the 6310, usually it shows up as the "6300 series" when it is identified on my other laptop, so that's what i wrote down. I edited my title too, thanks for that catch!
I downloaded the CUPS from your links, had it installed, but now I am getting the Failed to Connect The connection was refused when attempting to contact localhost:631. message. I am now scouting around trying to find solutions.
Another question, you mention CUPS 1.3.11...is there a reason I would use that and not the 1.4.x ?

Open a terminal and type
Is CUPS running? If not, type
Now try to access the CUPS web interface through
Code: Select all
/etc/init.d/cups status
Code: Select all
/etc/init.d/cups start
Code: Select all
localhost:631

# /etc/init.d/cups status
cups: scheduler is not running
#/etc/init.d/cups start
/usr/sbin/cupsd: error while loading shared libraries: libldap-2.4.so.2: cannot open shared object file: no such file or directory
cups: unable to start scheduler.
(had to type that by hand, I guess we can't copy from rxvt, I saw mention of glipper but I could only manage to make that copy the entries, not the results)
[Edit]: i think I found the problem, I should have uninstalled the old CUPS before installing the new one. Now to figure out how to uninstall both and start over

Which package are you installing? The full HPLIP or the smaller HPIJS? Is your printer listed? Are you still getting the "foomatic-rip-hplip failed" error?
The newer CUPS is much better at detecting remote printers and recognizing the correct protocol.you mention CUPS 1.3.11...is there a reason I would use that and not the 1.4.x

Ok after relooking at everything, I realized I had gone into information overload and had installed the ijs not lip. I deleted what i had and started over. I now have installed:rcrsn51 wrote:Which package are you installing? The full HPLIP or the smaller HPIJS? Is your printer listed? Are you still getting the "foomatic-rip-hplip failed" error?
hpliplite-3.9.12
foo-hplip-3.0
cups-1.3.11-i486-1
libnetsnmp-15 (i installed this because the dependancy manager said i was missing this)
Now my problem is CUPS just hangs at the Device URI page.
I have:
socket://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (my IP)
[Edit]: It finally got past that page (15 minutes or so?!) and now when I get to the model/driver selection page, again I only have one option for (although it's listed 50 times (really!)):
HP Officejet6300 Series hpijs, 3.9.12.29 (en)
so I selected that one to give it a try and when i try the test print page, i get this error message:
"/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip-hplip failed" (I do know it is in there, I looked)
I am at wits end with this. I did double check in my package manager and i definitely installed hipliplite mentioned above.
I am also wondering if they are installed into the right place, I am getting the feeling i am overlooking something very easy and very obvious in my ignorance.
Wouldn't 1.4.x be newer than 1.3.11? So shouldn't I have that instead? The newer CUPS is much better at detecting remote printers and recognizing the correct protocol.you mention CUPS 1.3.11...is there a reason I would use that and not the 1.4.x
Are you referring to the CUPS 1.4b in the repo at ibiblio? That was a beta version that wasn't ready for prime time.
FWIW, I installed the following into a fresh copy of Puppy 4.3.1 - Patriot's CUPS 1.3.11, the foomatic-rip patch and hpijs-3.9.4-dynppds. With these I did a successful simulated install of your printer.

Start CUPS and open the Administration tab. Click on Find New Printers. Is your printer detected? If so, let CUPS pick the correct protocol.
[Edit] At this point, I don't know for sure which driver packages you have in play and how compatible they are with your CUPS. I would recommend that you start a clean copy of Puppy and install the three packages I listed above. Then see if you can get your printer detected.

Yeah, I can't say I am confident I haven't totally confused the system, let alone myself. Fortunately i haven't done too much yet that i would be upset to lose with a fresh install, other than the "fun" getting my headset to work and switching back and forth between speakers and headset!
I will do a fresh install and try again very carefully and update here then.
