Hi everyone.
Can anyone point me in the right direction as to which is the best software to use to display Ethernet traffic (preferably in real time).
What I was thinking is setting up a Puppy machine with two network cards, where one network card connects to the router and the other feeds several windows machines via a Ethernet switch.
The software should allow traffic from one network card to the other but display things like IP addresses, port numbers being used, any http headers and so on.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
TIA
Pete.
EDIT
Sorry forgot to mention, the software can use a GUI or CLI, either is fine with me.
Is there an app for monitoring Ethernet traffic?
I haven't used it yet but I think what you are asking for is called "wireshark". I started looking into it when I wanted to trap data packets leaving a PC and arriving at a printer (but in that situation I had to find a way to tap into the cable feeding the printer - so not applicable to your method I guess)
If you were on Win I'd shoot these folks a contact.
Nagios, Observium, Zabbix and Zenoss are a few that could fit the bill.
What you've gotta do is pass your question on the right forum..
Preferably network specific and with an active community much like ours.

While a knowing individual might answer, the odds are elsewhere.
