Firefox-3.6 alas - 10MB pet

but it seems to be running fine without it

I just had to cp -rL chrome/* to the chrome directory from the source tree in /dist/bin

I had the same problem with seamonkey-2 as well but never figured it out - for future reference NEVER use the symlink chrome option unless you are a developer building from the svn tree continuously

Thanks ttuuxxx - unfortunately I cannot print from any version of Puppy to test... due to no printer, so I'll have to get some user feedback on that one.

No problem techno it also comes with a nice custom gui that I made up for 2.14x and puppies 4.2

I've been using Wolf Pup's Firefox pets in all my Puppy installations, excluding those that already have FF, and have had no problems since 4.30 was released. I have deleted my save file for 4.4 pre-alpha and installed the new FF 3.6 pet and in brief testing so far there have been no problems. Tried a few Youtube and other streaming videos and they played nice and smooth.

Guess I'll upgrade to the latest Flash and see if there is any change.

Looks like this is a good base for 4.4........

why not go with something totally radical and use Dillo as the default.. lots of browser in the tiny core repo, easily installed... I'm using Icecat, with dbus and dbus glib as tcls>>>sfs (*people now take aim at micko...*

I would rather stay with SeaMonkey as that was offered in the original that Puppy CE is based on.
Puppy CE to me at least is getting to look like a Stardust wannabe.
The implementation of auto-internet setup is good and works for me out of the box.
But if I want a Stardust look, I would just run Stardust.
If I want Firefox, I can install that.
So how about this for an idea.
Include a standalone web browser that can be removed and offer the option using Puppy Package Manager to install the browser the user chooses.
That should please those that want Seamonkey, Firefox, Chrome, etc.
If I made some upset with this comment, that happens.

I'm 100% for Firefox

Seamonkey is like in everything you can shake a stick at, Opera I hate the upsidedown gui, dillo usually can't download pets from the forum or ibiblio. Midori usually isn't all that stable, Firefox has the best selection of plugins, is used by most linux users, really if you take all the Linux browsers add up all the users and compare Firefox to the rest, Firefox would have like 75% of the market, Its because it auto-updates almost weekly to combat security issues, its stable and finally 3 series is more stable than FF2

Hi people, haven't tried 4.4 yet, is it same kernel and base as 4.3.1 ? Will look into changes but I'm posting regarding browsers.

Dillo is too basic in my opinion to go with, lacks features although it is neat if someone wants lightweight browser with not too much fat. But for default browser puppy needs some of mainstream browsers. I'm big fan of firefox and just like ttuuxxx I think opera has little different way of apeareance and integration of it's suite then users normally would expect. Seamonkey is okay I guess and somewhat lighter for resources then ff (not sure about 2.0 but 1.1.18 was really good on resources).

Seamonkey is probably good choice for default but I would personally always install firefox over that.

Ok, ok, no browser is a bit too radical... dialup guys need something..., but something light with adblock... FF2??? Firepup??? Yes, I know.. old.. (*more cannons aimed at micko*)... but good.

There is a vala browser based on webkit, I think gege had something to do with it..

Personally, I think flash is overrated. I hate flash videos. You are always at the mercy of the uplinks' speed

. The youtube downloader by trio is a neat get around. You can play flash without having flash, whether you have fast net or not. Would make us a bit gnuer too. (not a typo!)

Hmm.. maybe a new thread for this one as a browser is only a small (yet important) part of an OS.

I agree with this. Puppy has a long outstanding continuity in application programs choice.

I can agree with this, but then it would be a puplet not a puppy.

to answer your question, usually every CE version we have one and usually Seamonkey wins, Plus we had one when Barry first decided to step down, plus we had 2 poll on it, hmmmm I think that's about it, There was a small one when I first started 2.14X but that was the only time I did what I felt was best and most people supported me with Firefox.

Indeed a browser war, as any war, isn't good.
My opinion is, that 4.4CE, also due to the stardust thing, isn't a puppy anymore, but a puplet.
Don't misunderstand, I like that stardust approach very well.

Now if the community, whatever this is, goes in this directions, so be it.

And it will not deter me to look into this product.

Thank you coolpup for reminding me of the wikka.
The openssl pet referenced there didn't cure the issue.
So I will to have to look more in depth of this.

Curiously, I discovered that that same program goes well in puppy 4.2.

Don't know why, so I have things to work upon.

It is an e-mail client running in wine. (Pegasus mail)
At home it runs without a problem, as I use the ISP's smtp server.
I am at a holiday resort and used already earlier, with success, the gmail smtp server which needs SSL and authentication with the 4.20 one year ago,
Now I use alternatively 4.4CE and Dpup484beta4 and used the same setup as last year.
In none it works.
I asked the question in the dpup thread, but for a long time, gposil hasn't been present (I hope nothing serious has arrived to him)

In wine I have ssl related dll's available.

I just want to bring the puppies I use at the same functional level for ease of operation, as it annoys me a bit to go 'back' to 4.20 only for e-mail.

sorry, i could not help with anything wine-related. the only experience i have in this field is picasa, but that brings it's own wine with it...

puplet's are remasters using a built in Puppy remaster script, 2.14X has been built without, I've edited the sfs by hand and rebuilt the distro, I also think 4.4 by techno is built the same way, which would make it a valid release.
