Kdenlive-0.98-1 for Carolina

#1 Post by battleshooter »

Image Kdenlive

Kdenlive is an intuitive and powerful multi-track video editor, including most recent video technologies. Our software is completely free, as defined by the GNU foundation. Using Kdenlive is investing in a community driven project, which aims to establish relationships between people in order to built the best video tools.

So, the project's kinda stagnated but I thought I'd do a build. I initially did a git build, but found it was actually older than the release! Thanks to Carolina having most the dependencies preinstalled it's quite small. (Well actually it's unbelievably small, but I don't like to crow until I've seen how stable it is in the long run.) I also finally figured out the exact KDE components needed to run Kdenlive, I'll post them later so others can build Kdenlive more easily for their versions of Puppy.

Download Kdenlive-0.9.8
Size: 30.9 MB

Where possible I used the dependencies found in the Carolina repository and if not, the same version

Kdenlive KDE dependencies

#2 Post by battleshooter »

On the Kdenlive website it said KDE-Libs is a requirement. Unfortunately, according to Linux From Scratch or even the old guide that used to be up on the KDE wiki, there's a good 20-30 (maybe not, but whenever I've compiled KDE it feels like a lot). Over the years when compiling Kdenlive, I've skimmed on different dependencies depending on the the difficulty of compiling them and KDE-Libs continued just fine and Kdenlive ran without issue. So I've always known it was possible to really thin down the dependencies and hence end package size. I've tried it too, but it was only this year I realized the dependencies needed to be cut at compile time, not later, say when packaging. (I know it's obvious, but I didn't realize it till this year... :? sigh)

To work it out I compiled KDE-Libs with the bare requirement as stated on LFS minus Docbooks and mime-shared because I've been skipping DocBook for years and mime-shared has always been in Puppy. Finally I remembered I had some issues with Soprano and Kdenlive awhile back so I figured that Soprano must be important and added that to the KDE-Lib build after Kdenlive wouldn't start. I had to add a the "R" backends to Soprano after a bit of testing as Kden still wasn't happy with just the Cluence backend ,but bang, that's it. So now everyone can go and make small and handy Kdenlive packages. Because 30MB is so much better than 75MB+. It seems to be pretty stable too as long as I don't make the effort to crash it, but I think that might be inherent in Kdenlive's code.

Oh yeah, and added Oxygen because it complained about it at runtime, and gstreamer phonon backend was obvious... how else would you get sound?

I've uploaded the NLS for Kdenlive. I ripped it from a deb of a different version so I'm not sure if all the languages will display as desired. Feel free to offer feedback.

Tried this, seems impossible to load a file after I saved it. In fact it was only possible to load using another version of Kdenlive with another Puppy.

Also couldn't render.

(edit:never mind, it works, just have to add the .kdenlive suffix. Also the rendering works when I tried a really short clip, I suspect savefile was too small at first)
