font matching of fontconfig

#16 Post by upnorth »

There are a couple of tweeks that can be added to /etc/fonts:

In the fonts.conf file, if one adds DejaVu Sans entry right above both ocurances of Bitstream Vera Sans in both <alias> lists, then Nimbus Sans L won't have deference over DejaVu Sans in some interface elements. - looks much better, scales better, easier on the eyes.

In q18, I did this, but needed to reboot. Upon reboot, all looked fine.

In the local.conf file, if one adds the code:

Code: Select all

<!-- Reject bitmap fonts -->
 <selectfont>
  <rejectfont>
   <pattern>
     <patelt name="scalable"><bool>false</bool></patelt>
   </pattern>
  </rejectfont>
 </selectfont>
This will prevent the old X11 bitmap fonts from having deference over DejaVu Sans in dillo and opera.

The other alternative that works for me in all recent puppies 431+ is to simply replace the /etc/fonts folder with one from any other distribution or the default one from a fontconfig package. But, this is only tested at 800x600x24 crt 14". It seems to provide better overall font behaviour but adds a small amount of heft.

Hi

Really nice - and as above seems fast

Hardinfo not showing kernel modules ? and - is it DMF (bios info)
maybe a later version of Hardinfo if and when time allows.

running on:-
IBM A21m thinkpad - P111 800mhz, 192mb ram, ext3, 400mb
primary swap with manual frugal install.

SM2 feels fast too.

Looks fantastic - many thanks and very best regards - Ray

Audio Problem - Solved

#19 Post by tlchost »

Solved rjbrewer post had fix
exec gnome-mplayer "$@"

Using Bootable USB

When selecting play link in shoutcast, stream stops loading, will not play.
Happens regardless of link. Installed ForeFox, same problem. PuppyRadio will play streams.

internet tray icon

#20 Post by adi »

On the internet connection worked ok except the tray icon. I find internet connection wizard a bit confusing with so many options. I use wired lan and I don't know when the setup is done.

Manual frugal install.
Had same ext4 problem as reported by Jim1911
Ndiswrapper wouldn't work (with a Netgear WG111T, been ok before)- reported that the driver had loaded, then nothing...
Tried another USB dongle using rt73usb, (TL-WN321G) and this works, even with WPA-PSK. No need for Pwireless2 either, which is a first for Quirky and most of the 4series.

Q018 Samba shares on LAndisk not working

#22 Post by mawebb88 »

The Simple Network wizard worked great (on my Acer Aspire 5100)

Unfortunately no joy with either of the lameSMB apps. So installed Barry's patched pnethood-0.65-utf8.pet but Barry this is missing this bit:

Code: Select all

 #v423 BK: puppymike says need this to get cifs to work...
 sleep 0.5
 [ ! -e /proc/fs/cifs ] && sleep 1 #BK i have put these sleeps as it was slow to appear
 [ ! -e /proc/fs/cifs ] && sleep 1 #   after i ran 'modprobe cifs'
 echo 0 > /proc/fs/cifs/LinuxExtensionsEnabled

So I had to extract it from my 431 install and add it to the pnethood script manually.

Then pnethood finds my lanDisk samba shares but unfortunately when I go to show the the files its all wrong (just one icon with no file name and should be many files all with names)

Alsa driver

#23 Post by Firefox »

Manual frugal install
Alsa picks up motherboardsound chip and runs ok both gnome and pmusic pick up sound.
Does not pick up soundblaster card on pci slot and after configuring, pmusic plays mp3s but gnomeplayer does not.
The soundblaster card is not saved and has to be rerun at every boot.

It's finally time to correct the misspelled "unkown" in the list of CUPS devices.

The file is /usr/lib/cups/backend/pdf-writer and the error is on line 42. Unfortunately, "unknown" appears to be one character too long. So make if "PDF" instead. Then do a CUPS restart.

first time testing it, it found the video card real easy, second time had to do a bunch of test and finally Vesa worked which is good. Usually use it.

Had to fixmenus to get the icons right in the menu
freememmory applet is only showing a 1 screenshot below
Seamonkey is using the newer theme, Below is the theme from 2.0.4 I'm using in 4.3.2 plus the extra settings for a personal bookmarks like the forum, ibiblio, puppy.ca
Just shutdown seamonkey, delete /.mozilla <---hidden folder and install the pet and start seamonkey
This new setup is great, I really like the animated windows decorations and menu button, plus the taskbar/menu icons are much clearer than jwm

when I added the "blue-moon.pet" icon theme and switched icons it set the icons on the desktop and not in the menu, typing fixmenus fixed that, usually it would do that with out the extra fixmenus step.

bug report:
1. hardinfo can not list the kernel module, it was because missing the lsmod in /sbin.
2. gnome-mplayer can not play the file with space, it was because the defaultmediaplayer and defaultvideoplayer script missing the "" for $@, it should:
exec gnome-mplayer "$@"

Thanks!

Fbpanel bug or feature?

#34 Post by OverDrive »

Fbpanel Menu automatically closes every so many seconds when your slowly "cruisin" the menu. I personally find this annoying. This is using pfix=ram. Is there line in a config file I can edit?
