rcrsn51 wrote:Now that Quirky is using GRUB4DOS, there is an interesting change in philosophy. In previous Puppies, installing GRUB's stage1 code to the MBR was seen as dangerous and there were warnings about doing so.

However, the GRUB4DOS installer only installs to the MBR with no warnings about potential side effects with the other existing operating systems.

In fact, the safest way to install GRUB, onto the partition boot sector, does not appear to be supported in GRUB4DOS.
I haven't had any input to the GRUB4DOS package, it is created by shinobar, maintainer of Japanese Puppy.

If there are better ways for GRUB4DOS to work, maybe you could take it up with shinobar?

Yes, I can confirm that I have seen this too with a frugal install.
I have sent an email to the developer of Fbpanel asking if this behaviour can be improved.

Thanks barry that was simple enough :), also you can change the 12 vs 24 hr time format in the same menu, that's handy:)

When you left click on freememory applet you have 3 choices, help, partview, KP, only partview is working, usually I change KP to Pprocess, and remove the help and replace it with set time&date, would be handier if set time and date were an option on the clock, actually if ever you want to rewrite sometime, a clock with selectable 12/24 hr format and setting time and date as a right or left click option would be great. We have had in the past tons of "How do you change 24hr format to 12" request on here.

Hi ttuuxxx
I changed clicking on the clock to open set time.
fbpanel configuration > clock > Enter program to run when clicked = set-time-for-puppy

I am not in q018 now but 013 and it looked normal in three browsers. Puppy, SM and FF.

Could q018 be that different?

Quick question from ignorance: I have the slow movement problem with my touchpad too - what did you tweak in xorg.conf to make it better?

pemasu wrote:Touchpad tabbing. I got it working. I have included my working xorg.conf attachment.

I made changes to Section "ServerLayout":

Code: Select all

InputDevice "Synaptics Mouse" "SendCoreEvents"
And to Section "InputDevice", Identifier "Synaptics Mouse" I added two rows:

Code: Select all

Option "SendCoreEvents" "true"
Option "TapButton1" "1"
If you need to use modified xorg.conf, backup it, because you lose changes if you run xorgwizard.
Did you have the same problem with no scolling on the touchpad aswell?

I didn't need to add "SendCoreEvents" just adding below to Section "InputDevice" works to get both double tap and scroll working for me.

Code: Select all

    Option "TapButton1" "1"
    Option "SpecialScrollAreaRight" "true"
    Option "VertEdgeScroll" "true"
    Option "VertTwoFingerScroll" "true"

Example:

Code: Select all

Section "InputDevice"
	Identifier "Synaptics Mouse"
	Driver "synaptics"
	Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
	Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
	Option "LeftEdge" "1700"
	Option "RightEdge" "5300"
	Option "TopEdge" "1700"
	Option "BottomEdge" "4200"
	Option "FingerLow" "25"
	Option "FingerHigh" "30"
	Option "MaxTapTime" "220"
	Option "MaxTapMove" "220"
	Option "VertScrollDelta" "100"
	Option "MinSpeed" "0.30"
	Option "MaxSpeed" "0.90"
	Option "AccelFactor" "0.0090"
	Option "SHMConfig" "on"
    Option "TapButton1" "1"
    Option "SpecialScrollAreaRight" "true"
    Option "VertEdgeScroll" "true"
    Option "VertTwoFingerScroll" "true"
	#Option "Repeater" "/dev/ps2mouse"
EndSection
Thanks.

For slow movements change these values to xorg.conf, about three times bigger:

Code: Select all

Option "MinSpeed" "0.30"
Option "MaxSpeed" "0.90"
Option "AccelFactor" "0.0090"

Stu90:
I didnt get it working without "SendCoreEvents", I think. I tried so many configurations that I am not sure what it absolutely needs.
But the working result is the most important thing.
I dont use scrolling so I didnt search info for it. Thanks for the tip.

Unfortunately my laptop power supply plug hole broke totally yesterday. Unbelieveable but true. I got it working temporarily. I am right now copying all the data away so using spare time posting to the best forum in the universe.

ndiswrapper

#73 Post by Keef »

Been experimenting with ndiswrapper, which would not work for me.
Starting fresh, I first tried SNS, but got:

ERROR: Windows driver does not seem to work, it has been uninstalled

Used Network Wizard next and got:

netwg11t: driver installed
device (1385:4251) present

Nothing happens after this. Looked in Process Manager and connectwizard is still running (two instances) as is net-setup.sh (twice)and connectwizard_2nd

Rebooted with a savefile and finally got it to work. I've a feeling this may be a bit hit and miss though, but I've had enough re-installs for now.

(Initially wouldn't get the WPA connection, but tried again and it worked. As mentioned in last post, this is a bit of a miracle in newer pups without the aid of Pwireless2)

Posting from Q18 now, will see if all is well after a reboot later.
[Edit]
Nope - no joy on reboot. Module was loaded but no interface.
Rebooted - now there's an interface up, and blinky doing its stuff, but can't get WPA connection.

Bit of a pattern developing here, methinks (back on 214X for now).

Compaq CQ10 netbook

I wanted to report a couple things working now in 018 that didn't in previous versions.
018 detects my Broadcom wireless card.
It was not recognized in 013, but it had been in previous versions.
My sound now works "out of the box".
Previously I had to open Retrovol and check off the "speaker volume" to get it turned on.

One small bug.
It does not correctly detect my battery charge.
It says it is at 0% when it is fully charged. All previous versions of Quirky correctly detected my battery charge, not a big deal.

It looks great!, as usual with all your builds it is slick and built for use without a lot of fluff, Just right.
Thanks so much.

I have tested Quirky 018 on a Acer Aspire One Netbook and Acer Aspire Revo. Quirky 018 worked without any problems on the Acer Aspire 1 Netbook. The video setup was normal and no problems were encountered: Here is the report-video output:

VIDEO REPORT: Quirky, version 018

Chip description:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Driver used by Xorg:
intel

Video mode used by Xorg:
Resolution: 1024x600 Depth: 16

I did find that MMS (Microsoft Media Server) audio stream was not supported. I guess I will have to add the Mplayer extra codecs package to the final configuration.

The Acer Revo uses the Nvidia video chip. Xorgwizard did not work correctly the first time and the xserver would not start. I had to re-run the wizard and manually selected the Xorg Vesa driver. I had to start the Xserver with xwin. The video resolution is not correct for the monitor(only VGA 1024 by 768). On reboot, everything worked correctly. Here is the report-video output for the Acer Revo:
VIDEO REPORT: Quirky, version 018

Chip description:
oem: NVIDIA
product: MCP79 Board - hornet-0 Chip Rev

Driver used by Xorg:
vesa

Video mode used by Xorg:
Resolution: 1024x768 Depth: 16

Due to the newer kernel, the available Nvidia driver pet can not be used. Hopefully, when the final version of Quirky is released, some one will re-compile it for the newer kernel.

Quirky does work well even with the video problems. The Simple Network Setup worked with my WPA2 wireless setup. One suggestion is to add Pwireless package to Quirky. I have found Pwireless a great utility to have when traveling about with the netbook. I used the Puppy 4.3.1 Pwireless Pet with Quirky without any problems.

In a previous post you wrote "I also created an SFS file, so when the next Quirky is released, users will be able to compile drivers." Is this available for download?

Hey guys, would someone like to have a go at compiling the commercial Nvidia drivers for Quirky?

Lucid Puppy is using the same 2.6.33.2 kernel, and other puplets are likely to also, so the Nvidia drivers will be useful for many puplets.

What I was thinking of doing is build-in support to download a commercial Nvidia PET package. A user would get the desktop going with Vesa (or nv driver) and would then be offered to download an appropriate commercial Nvidia PET pkg.

We do have Nvidia PETs for the 2.6.30.5 kernel, compiled by 'gray':
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 1945984701

...I wonder though, is there any way that we can determine in a script what is the appropriate driver to choose for the user's particular video hardware?

Oh yeah, you would need to install the mesa 7.6 PET, from the 'puppy-quirky' repository. That will be needed to compile.

Upgraded to Quirky 018 from 013, seems fast & stable (LiveCD, VESA 1280x1024 on Biostar M7VIW, Athlon XP 1800, S3 Savage embedded graph. controller). But my desktop settings (background and GTK theme) were not imported from earlier version, probably due to Openbox; nor were any SeaMonkey bookmarks & settings.

Went to /tmp/versioncleanup, as suggested at boot time, to see if anything could be taken back -- well, either I'm getting duller than I thought or there's really no such directory, even Pfind couldn't spot it. No big loss for me (had just been playing around a bit with Quirky), but possibly worth reporting: guess this directory should exist anyway, even if empty.

If more one window are open on a desktop, it does get cleared by clicking on the taskbar's desktop icon, but not all the corresponding window tabs appear in the taskbar itself. Tried with three windows (AbiWord, rxvt and MTpaint) and after clicking to iconify 'em all this way, only one or two tabs appeared in the taskbar; sure, they did get back all three clicking again on the iconifying icon, but one or two couldn't be called back individually.

Was accustomed to switching desktops with the scrollwheel on the background, but admittedly that could easily happen unwittingly; will get used to walk down to the tray.

The main menus are a bit too "spartan" even to a no-bling fan, and nevertheless slower to open (?).

Hurrah, the drive capacity now shows up right! Big thanks and compliments for all you do, Barry.

I think you reported this for an earlier Puppy? I think I responded then too, that mp4 and flv files play ok in my tests.

Just in case, I tested with vesa, still play ok.

Do you have spaces in the path/filenames?
