See Wow's Gnome-2.20.3 which works fine with puppy 4.2.1. I haven't tried it with later pups. Pay careful attention to Wow's installation instructions.

Welcome to puppy.

That's correct, it's much too large for a pet. If you are using a frugal installation, sfs files are definitely the best way. I haven't tried a full hd installation of gnome on puppy.

You can use PET MAKER PLUS here to convert an SFS to a pet if you'd like to try. However, this is not how the SFS method was designed and may over-write system files that may cause problems, especially when uninstalling the SFS installed as pet.

just open the .sfs and copy contents to / ,at least thats how i do it. yes it works in 4.3.1 as well, though you have to convert the .sfs to .sfs4 to read it.
either way follow the instructions to the letter. I just wish it had gnome do and docky as well.
