Crap company.

I saw this before but what made me post was this.

" It deletes the svchosts.exe.
So that mean no networking when the machine comes backup.

So roll back is going to involve a USB stick and
a new pair of shoes after walking to 1000 hosts "

This also shows some fixes here if you are affected.

A better fix??
" Okay, so in my previous post I recommended copying

the svchost.exe binary

from the servicepackfiles\i386 directory.

While in most cases this should work fine,
there is still a possibility of version issues doing this.
The better solution is "

" I felt a great disturbance on the 'Net, as if millions of XP machines suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.
I fear something terrible has happened. "

I had exactly this problem, mcafee trashing Windows on the company laptop I was using, several years ago. It took me a couple of weeks downtime before I got it straightened out. Never will use Mcafee again.

I once installed a McAfee feature on a Windows box, decided I didn't like it, and tried to remove it.

Had to spend all day on the phone with Microsoft tech support reinstalling Windows (at least TS in those days it was still in Texas, I think now it's in India or something).

Part of the long process that made me try Linux.

An evil idiot company.

No pun >> but I know your pain thane.

This is what you need.
Great site Major Geeks.
I recommend them to any Windows user.

They also have >>
Way Off Base and Off Base areas on their website.
And sometimes MG posts Puppy.

If you are an Aussie user pick >> Internode
to download from >> a very fast mirror.

McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool 3.0.128.8
" Running the McAfee Consumer Product Removal tool
(MCPR.exe) removes all
2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009 versions of McAfee
consumer products. "

My wife now uses the Windows box, mainly to exchange e-mails. I use Windows at the office but we have a tech support section so software installation isn't my problem.

For personal use I've switched to Linux.

AVG and SpyBot classify some McAfee products as Spyware, plus a few other well-known brands as well.
