Hi scOttman

I have installed vlc-gtk 2.6.8 but alas still no luck with playing streams. I cheched that the streams I was trying to play (BBC World News and AlJazeera) worked in StreamPlayer 0.2 and they did. I have attached the output of vlc-gtk_log again in two parts. I hope this helps. I have not yet commented out the lines you suggested. Is this still worth a try?

Regards,

Ken.

Hi scOttman

I thought I would try running vlc-gtk in a terminal again then attempt to get a stream to play. I have attached the output. Does this suggest we are getting closer?

Edit. I have just found that I can play this url mms://stream1.france24.yacast.net/f24_liveen for France 24 english using the "stream url" function. I have tried to play the same channel from "favorites "with no luck. The url in vlc-gtk-favs is different being an rtmp:// rather than an mms://. Hope this helps.

Hi scOttman

I have installed vlc-gtk 2.6.9. I am now able to play streams both from the favorites list and urls. Thanks for all the work you have done on this. I will now spend some time trying the other facilities. Can I just ask one question about the "OSC". I don't seem to have any controls on screen playing either a dvd or a stream even after clicking on the "OSC" button. In "Controls" the "Disable the VLC-GTK on screen controls during playback " box is ticked but I cannot untick it as it is grayed out. Is this what I should expect or should I be able to untick the box and so get the OSC working?

Regards,

Ken.

You need to install xdotool ... I have updated the link to it in the main post.. Its a .gz file, just extract it to /usr/bin/ and then try...

I used 2.6.9 for a few hours on lucid - everything worked for me this time using only vlc 1.0.6, so this one should *finally* work for you too! Thanks for the patience!! NOTE: the first few runs, you might need to double check the OSC checkbox is not ticked again.. It happens sometimes, yet to work out why..

Hi scOttman

I am sorry about missing xdotool. I should have read your first post more carefully. I have installed it and unchecked the OSC checkbox in "Control" and all is now working. I have started and closed vlc-gtk a number of times and the OSC checkbox remains unchecked and so all is looking good. Thanks again for all the work you have done to get this working with my setup.

Ken.

Hi scOttman

I did reply to your last post but as I don't see it I thought I would post again. I have installed vlc-gtk 2.7 and everything I have tried is working. However, if in "Control" I tick the OSC checkbox the OSC popup appears as it should. If I then un-check this box the OSC popup still appears though the box remains unchecked. I tried a reboot but it made no difference. I don't think this happened in 2.6.9 but I can't check this as I deleted the pet. Can you let me know if this happens with you. If not I will try a re-download and install.

Ken.

It all works as expected for me on akita and lucid - meaning that when the 'disable the OSC' checkbox (in the 'controls' tab, at the top) is ticked, the on screen controls do not display.. when that checkbox is unticked, the on screen controls do display..

Even when the checkbox is ticked, you can still force the OSC to display (in certain cases) by click the 'OSC' button at the bottom of the main GUI, next to the 'Stop Playback' button..

Hi scOttman

Have re-downloaded and installed vlc-gtk 2.7 and all is now working as it should. I manually deleted .vlc-gtk this time after uninstalling the pet before I reinstalled the new copy of the pet. Don't know if this would make any difference but as I said all is now working. Thanks again for this pet.

Ken.

Sorry to bother with this...

#131 Post by stevielee »

Sorry to bother all of you, but I followed the installation instructions in detail both from this thread and the vlc_nogui-1.1.9 thread, and I have a problem. The cli version runs, but responds with a no decoder error on every video. Are there codecs that need to be installed? How would I do that? Mplayer runs fine, by the way. MY OS is slacko 5.3.1.

I think the vlc pet you used is not compatible with your system - it was compiled for wary/akita... To make sure, open a terminal and run

vlc /path/to/file

If it still doesn't work properly, then your VLC .pet is broken in your puppy - cos it needs a different ffmpeg or other libs...

So... Check the slacko repos for a vlc_nogui package... It probably won't have one though... You will probably need to compile one yourself (see the thread where you got the vlc_nogui-1.1.19 pet for compile options) .... Or, you might have to nag 01micko or another Slacko user to build a vlc_nogui for the repos...

If you really wanna test VLC-GTK without all that effort, you can just install a full VLC package (with the normal, fat, Qt interface), and run VLC-GTK - cos it should work with any *working* vlc package... If not, tell me ;)

A bit more off topic, also....

#133 Post by stevielee »

Thanks for the helpful reply, scottman.

It think it is safe to say that the vlc (via cli) was lacking the appropriate codecs due to missing library files. This is based on the error messages in the cli environment within the running vlc process. Test videos would play the audio in some cases, but never play the video. I did not realize that at first, because I first tried the videos in a place where playing audio is frowned upon. So when I got home and tried it on a separate computer, audio played on as least some test files. These machines all were running the same main sfs and save file, by the way.

Anyhoo.....I know this is straying off the subject, but if I got the a full vlc install as you suggest, there would be little need to use the vlc-gtk gui. I was hoping to use the no_gui and vlc-gtk together as it is so small and efficient....no doubt the reason you came up with it. The regular vlc takes up a lot of save file.

How does one find a version of vlc that runs in slacko 5.3.1? Is the package manager the best way? Can you suggest how to find good locations for desired programs particular to an OS? I find myself stumbling through ibiblio where I don't know if I am getting the most up-to-date versions of things or where I can find versions that work with a particular form of linux. And when I use the package manager, there are so many dependencies - how can I get save those individual packages so I do not need to download them again? And the manager says that all the downloaded dependencies do not even cover all the libraries! But it is hard to find the list of missing libraries....is there a way to get around all this and be more of an independent agent...find the program you want and then determine how to learn what the missing items are and then get them. I know this is a lot to ask, but it makes me want to return to
the synaptic manager of ubuntu.

I totally see your point about installing the full VLC being a waste of space/bloat - but it's a good way to test VLC-GTK as a last resort - so you know if it's even worthwhile (for you) using it with a cutdown vlc...

I think the best thing for you to do is to compile it for yourself... there are a few tips on the options i used on the ./configure script in the vlc_nogui-1.1.9 thread... For dependencies you will need ffmpeg, libvpx, schroedinger, other stuff - PLUS all their _DEV pets...

You get the sources for vlc, and most of the deps from the VLC website.

Hello Sc0ttman,

The idea of a GTK GUI for VLC is a good one, so thanks for developing it.

I have tried it a few times including the latest version, but I find that I can not launch streams by entering a playlist metafile such as a .pls in the URL field.

It works with the Qt GUI and even from CLI eg for WABC in New York using vlc_nogui-1.1.5 in Racy:-

Code: Select all

cvlc http://provisioning.streamtheworld.com/pls/WABCAMAAC.pls
Not sure if I should be inputting the URL in a different way or if something can be done in your VLC-GTK to make it work by just entering the URL and clicking the button in the normal way.

I just copied and pasted the URL into my VLC-GTK (in the Streams tab), and it plays fine for me .. Well, the audio playlist GUI pops up with no entries in it (not ideal!) but I can listen to the radio station fine...

Maybe the problem is with incompatible settings set by VLC-GTK, that cause problems with vlc itself... Try enabling the 'debugger' (in the Advanced tab), then launch the station as normal - you'll get a popup window of the VLC command to be used - just copy & paste the vlc command into a terminal and gradually reduce the options until it works, or until you are left with only `cvlc "URL"` ... This might help you find the problem - if it is indeed related to options being set by VLC-GTK.

Hope that helps.

A little more on the Slacko & VLC relationship

#137 Post by stevielee »

I talked a few weeks ago about using the vlc-gtk as a light and easy way to get a gui for vlc. earlier in this thread it was shown that the main vlc program was lacking some dependencies that presumably are associated with non-slackware versions of puppy. I never resolved that problem, but the slacko package manager does allow for the downloading of a 2.0.x version of VLC. The point I want to make here is that a separate qt library sfs file is available and can be loaded at boot. This obviates the need for incorporating qt into the packages associated with the vlc download - and cuts the vlc player down from 140 megs to 40 megs and thus does not clog up the save file. Many dependencies are still missing, but it seems to play fine enough.
This info is of interest only to neophytes, but maybe it is something helpful.

NOTE: I just re-uploaded a (more) fixed 2.8!

Changes:
- OSC won't quit on slow VLC reload (over samba, etc) after clicking item in playlist

...Around 9 people downloaded 2.8 at the time of posting this,
those people should re-download, if the OSC is exiting between playback of files..

(The only difference is an extra 'sleep 1' near the end of /usr/bin/vlc-gtk-osc, after 'get_vlc_pids' on line 441)

EDIT: For something a little different, a simpler VLC GUI, see here VLC embedded in gtkdialog
