MyWolfe-014 a wolfe-upup test now MyWolfe-015 Subject description: It has been built to see how good he upup scripts are. |
|
HI all
MyWolfe-014 was built using Barry Kauler woof build system. It was built based on the Ubuntu-Lucid distro repo. This was made possible in a large part do to Playdayz sending Barry some changes for the woof system to allow it to use the lucid library's.
It has the 2.6.33.2 kernel, glibc 2.11. I have it using JWM desktop. I put a lot of thought into how I wanted the puppy to be, In previous MyWolfe's I have striped out a lot and trying to keep it lean but at the same time give it a clean desktop and menu system. MyWolfe is a more fatter puppy but I keep the clean and lean outlook. But it is fatter do to added programs that I used a lot and others had pointed out was a good think to have. So it has the full Open-office 3.11 made by Barry Kauler taken out of his sfs and made into a pet. This give MyWolfe a full office suite.
edited took out Picasa put Gimp 2.6.8 back in.
With this edition of MyWolfe you get the best of both worlds, you have the compact development system of puppylinux sfs system and can add on programs using the sfs addon files. install pet files and also install Ubuntu file using the Puppypackage manger.
I have my ContorlPanel also installed so that many of the use only once in a while are not lost but at the same time not making the menu a cluttered system.
It still has the Xine-ui 0.99.6 with xine-libs 1.1.18. I added a program that jemimah had put on the forms goggles-mm I like this program for listening to my mp3 but it also list them by artist, albums and title.
Download MyWolfe-014 here it is 340.7 megs

Hello, GrumpyWolfe.
As usual, I'm sure that your stuff will be interesting, but...
Strange, you announce 340 Mg and it donwloads only 324.9 Mg ...
Also, nothing gets burned on the cd, it burns only 0.03 %. Did you have a problem uploading?
Sincerely,

Hi, GrumpyWolfe.
Sorry for the false alert about burning the iso, my computer had been on for a long time and the dvd burner had fallen "asleep". I rebooted, and burning and booting went quite well. I am writing this from wolfe 0.1.4 now.
First of all, thanks for a very "logical" distro. One can see you paid real attention to avoid "verbosity" in the menu, and on the screen. Along the same line of thought, the applications you present are few, but of quality, and are enough to allow the user to do some serious work right from login time.
Some feedback if I may.
-- the xorg probe script persists at setting my screen at maximum resolution (1600x1200), in which I find the characters difficult to read. I cannot get xorg to use a resolution of 1280x 1024.
-- the wallpaper chooser button doesnot work in your config panel. Upon further checking, it's /usr/local/apps/Wallpaper that's not working.
-- I cannot change the keyboard type to "105 keys international" nor can I change the keyboard to "canada-legacu" or "qc" because Xorg cannot find any "Xkb" to use!!! Basically, this means that this Wolfe will be for English-speakers only.
-- the "save dvd session" should appear automatically on the screen when you're using the live dvd.
-- a root button should be on the jwm panel if you want to keep the screen clean.
-- I sorely missed a console icon on the screen. Of course, the user can pull these icons on the screen himself, but not all users are as familiar with Puppy as I am. Only experienced users can do that.
What I liked:
-- OpenOffice is the main default writing/calculating/databasing tool. Yay!
-- the google music manager
-- a rox version 2.9 that works properly !
That's all for now. I'll get back to you if I have more feedback.
Have a nice day!

Another thing:
Using Picasa even as a quick image viewer? Hihi, you've got to be kidding!. For quick viewing, viewnior or similar small app would be (is) great.
The way I feel about Picasa: it's a great app for someone with a big picture collection. But otherwise, no, please.
Look, it's 103 Mg in opt/google, the user part in /root not included in that count. That's too big for a Puppy, UNLESS you find a way to make its wine core available to be used for other compatible windows apps. Then it would be a real plus, but by itself, I'm sure it's NOT a good choice for Puppy. (My opinion only of course.)
Tah-dah.

Hi musher0
Well I did re-upload and then had my wife download and try it out and all went well so no harm there.
Your last part yes Picasa is big for just a picture viewer and I may work on making it work with a full wine and not the special one it has. Again I use Google services and upload to there Picasa site and this allows me to do this from my desktop. I did do a lot of pictures and may get back to it more now.
Will check closely at which xorg it has on board I just used the default they set up when the configed this in woof may need to use a fuller xorg. And thanks for the feed back.

Why MyWolfe-015 has Gimp and not Picasa |
|
Hi to all and musher0
musher0 I took to heart what you had suggested and installed a full wine and then got the window version of Picasa and made a pet of it, well it did work sorta. It was not stable Picasa would crash at odd times without any reason why, and by the time upup put in the full wine and all the libs to support it I had a 348 meg iso and it was not stable. Well there was a plus while reseting up to make MyWolfe-015 glibc and glibc locals got a small up date and it now has xorg 1.7.6-2 and xserver 7.5+5 so maybe musher0 your video will work better and your keyboard will be supported.
I anybody want me to make a version that is lite not with open-office and Gimp and let me know will do so and call it MyWolfe-lite-015

MyWolfe-015 patch |
|
Sorry Puppy users
Some how a file link failed to hold so goggles-mm does not work and I added a few other links so when you are on a file and right click you can chose to open a picture with Gimp to edit instead of with Viewnior, also a link so you can open a document with writer instead of geany.
So get it here.
