NVIDIA Drivers for kernel 2.6.33.2 (wary-020)

#1 Post by CatDude »

Hi

I have managed to compile a couple of nVIDIA drivers for wary-020

Using gray's .pets as templates, i made the following pet packages:
  • NVIDIA-173.14.25-k2.6.33.2-1.pet
    NVIDIA-96.43.16-k2.6.33.2.pet
They also contain the files that gray had in his .pets
gray wrote: The pet packages also contain OpenGL libraries (libglut and libGLU) and a test program glxgears, so you do not need to install the xorg_dri package for OpenGL support.
I tested both of them in fresh frugal installs without any problems.

You can get them here: Username = puppy
Password = linux

catdude,

Thanks for these drivers. :D

Installed NVIDIA-173.14.25 on frugal installation of wary-020, appears to be working fine. :D

Also installed it on a frugal installation of Lupu-113 which uses the same kernel as wary-020. It appears to install properly, but does not work. See attached desktop for error messages. :(

Hello Jim

Sorry for the delay in responding,
but i have been trying to get this to work in lupu-113, and have not had any luck.

Although i couldn't get this .pet working, i did manage to compile the driver in lupu-113
using the following:
  • kernel_src-2.6.33.2-patched.sfs
    lupu-113.sfs
    NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.25-pkg1.run
I followed the advice Barry gave here: http://www.bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=01536
that is, drop to the prompt, and enter the following:

Code: Select all

# cd /usr/src/linux-2.6.33.2
# make prepare
Then did the usual:

Code: Select all

# cd /
# sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.25-pkg1.run
It complained about gcc versions being different, but i continued anyway (could someone tell me if this was unwise)
i carried on regardless, and when it was finished i ran xwin to get back to the desktop.

At the desktop, i opened a terminal and ran:

Code: Select all

# depmod
# modprobe nvidia
Then just to check it was loaded, i ran:

Code: Select all

# lsmod
Next i manually edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf
changing the driver from nv to nvidia
saved the change, and restarted X server.

As you can see in the image below, nvidia-settings is now working.

I would have made a .pet,
but i got a bit confused as files are in different locations than they were in the .pet i used as the template.

Hope this helps

catdude,

Thanks for the info, however, my skills don't include compiling. Seems like you've succeeded where others haven't on this kernel.

Installed NVIDIA-173.14.25 on frugal installation of quirky-021, but it gave same results as posted above for lupu-113.

NVIDIA-195 may do better than 173, that's what works best on my hardware of those that gray complied for the older kernel.

Cheers,
Jim

I also compiled the factory Nvidia drver package in lupu 114 after installing the kernel source and devx.
But I tried it twice.
First, one has to exit to prompt and run the xorgwizard to get a working xorg.conf file for the installer to work with.
Next, and this was on the second try, I had to make a system link in /lib to the GL file in /usr/lib.
I think it was the one from the first failed install. that matched the installer package. In my case, it was INVIDIA-Linux-x86-195.36.24-pkg1.run
I did your suggested step both times of:
# cd /usr/src/linux-2.6.33.2
# make prepare
Then I ran the installer from the prompt and also got the compiler mismatch to which I answered NO to have it continue.
It failed on the depmod -a -q and I still told it to continue.
It asked if I wanted it to modify xorg.conf.
I said yes and picked the first selection.
I then typed depmod -a and then modprobe nvidia and then xwin.
And I had a working factory driver.

Note: 114 does not have the glxgears file in it and I do not know if the installer made the nvidia-settings file or an attempt with one of your pets did.

I also tried to make a pet and failed.
I am guessing too many steps.

This was all done on a frugal install.
