Subject description: Now you can overclock your card if you want to.

This applies to Nvidia video cards only. This is for those of you who, like me, want to squeeze as much performance out of your Nvidia video card as possible. Warning!! Use at your own risk.

1. Be sure Nvidia Driver is installed and works properly.

2. Back up your system using your preferred method.

3. Navigate to /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Click on it to open it in text editor.

4. Look for a section of code named “Device.” It should resemble something similar to this.

Section “Device”
Identifier “Videocard0″
Driver “nvidia”
VendorName “Videocard vendorname”
BoardName “nVidia Corporation Unknown device 0000″
EndSection

Now all you need to do is add this piece of code towards the end of the section.

Option “Coolbits” “1″

Now your xorg.conf should look like this.

Section “Device”
Identifier “Videocard0″
Driver “nvidia”
VendorName “Videocard vendorname”
BoardName “nVidia Corporation Unknown device 0000″
Option “Coolbits” “1″
EndSection

5.Restart X or Reboot your machine.

6. Open Menu-System-Nvidia-X Server Settings.

7. Click on "Clock frequencies". Have fun.

Subject description: Tried it and it works

I tried the change to xorg.conf. The nvidia-settings tool did show a section to change the clock frequencies. I have aversion to over-clock. In past, it has caused more problems than it solved for me. But, it does work. I wonder if there are more hidden options. Is there a good reference on them by chance?

Very Happy Silly me! I found in the nvidia html files as part of the installer package. Here is the official html listing of options for xorg.conf. The attachment is gzip to upload to the forum.
xconfigoptions.html.gz

Or you can read it on the net
