No sound using SB Audigy |
|
I know this problem has been answered already but I have followed the instructions in the previous threads and I still have no sound. So I hope you will indulge me and help throw some light on this problem. I have tried the various media players installed with Puppy (version 1.0.7, by the way, installed to hard drive).
The problem exists for both a music CD in the drive and a track I have ripped in mp3 format.
I followed the instructions in http://www.murga.org/%7Epuppy/viewtopic.php?t=2963 copied the two files across then ran "depmod". This gave the following output:
# depmod
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.29/sound/oss/ac97_plugin_ad1980.o.gz
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.29/sound/oss/ad1889.o.gz

depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.29/sound/oss/ymfpci.o.gz
Hardware Probe - Modules shows the soundcard detected and running.
No error messages are generated when I run "modprobe emu10k1.
Using gxine 0.4.6 you can "see" the file playing - track info, visualisations, etc - but no sound. I checked the mixer settings and they are okay. I tried various outputs on the soundcard, still no joy.
I am a Linux newbie and have been searching for a small, fast distro. Puppy sure looks like the way forward, but I need my music.

I see that the revised Audigy OSS driver has been downloaded many times, but no one has reported the outcome.
Those "*** Unresolved symbols" messages simply relate to the fact that the new ac97_codec module only suits the new emu10k1 module, and not those other OSS drivers.
But if the OSS driver is not working for you, try ALSA instead -

Problem Solved!
Turned out my soundcard is knackered. Switched to on-board sound and everything works okay!
Thanks for the reply and sorry for troubling you.
