KDPUP = KDE 3.5.10 + dpup 484 beta 4

Hello people, here's something that kept me busy this days

base: dpup 484 beta 4
removed from dpup: none

added:
KDE 3.5.10 (runtime and desktop enviroment with konqueror as file browser and konsole) + mesa DRI

Internet:
firefox updated to 3.6.3, icedove (thunderbird), kopete , skype
pidgin 2.6.5, knemo, aMule, ktorrent
weechat 0.3.2, filezilla
added hosts file from mvps.org

Multimedia:
kmix, amarok 1.4.10, vlc 1.0.5 lite with vlc-gtk 1.5
smplayer frontend, k3b, lmms 0.4.2 by samedog
audacity, handbrake, avidemux2, hydrogen

Graphics:
gimp 2.6.8, inkscape full,
gqview, gwenview, kooka scanner & OCR,
ksnapshot

Games and emulators:
kpatience, ksame
Chromium B.S.U.
xmahjong, supertux, njam
mupen64plus, snes9x-gtk, xmame.SDL

Various other apps and utilities:
qt4 runtime
kpdf khexeditor kdeprint hpijs 3.9.12
ark unrar p7zip-full
kcalc pa_mcclamrock's classic fonts pack + zekton font

Other WMs also inside:
jwm / fluxbox / icewm

so if kde is too heavy for you you can switch to some
well known lightweight WM and still use kde apps ;)

NOTE: This is just a puplet, it's not official release nor I plan on extending it or maintaining/further developing at the moment.
Nothing crucial in base libs/modules/configuration is changed so if dpup didn't work for you or had some bug this one won't be exception.
You can post bugs if you find them or even better if you have fix for them but don't hope that I can do something about.
Don't ask why I did or didn't include something and why it's not KDE 4 - well kde 4 felt much more resourcefull and was pain to get working for me - seems like it doesn't like my gfx card.
Don't ask for Kdenlive, it's made for kde 4 and this version of kde is 3.5.10 as you could see. I added many multimedia apps though.
Even though it does have bunch of popular/fancy apps I'm not aiming specifically to noobs or geeks so you may still need to do fix here or there or manually edit something.
Open source OpenGL / DRI is inside but some of you may still need propietary drivers for your gfx card.
For others it may work out of the box as it does on mine. I haven't tested this on any PC except mine.
If you have 768 MB RAM will copy all to ram, you can probably do that with 512 MB + some swap too
since my swap is not used at all when booted.

My build / test machine:
AMD Sempron 3000+ 1.8 Ghz
MB: Asus WinFast NFSK8 series
768 MB RAM + 1 GB swap
GFX: ATI RADEON 9250, 256 MB
1024x768x24 resolution on LG Flatron

Download: kdpup-484beta4-2.6.30.5.iso 425,5 MB Thanks to russoodle for storage
Mirror 1 thanks to sickgut
Mirror 2 thanks to Saturn aka Xrter

Be sure to check MD5SUM
9cd0a305f324f0246a6a6244d182c55f kdpup-484beta4-2.6.30.5.iso

LITE VERSION
KDE desktop but without much extra kde apps and printer drivers
I even removed firefox.
Konqueror and konsole are inside.
220 MB!

Just downloaded and am posting from KDPUP right now. It's easy to tell that you put a lot of effort into your puplet........nice job. :)

It's early in the morning here so I'll try it out better later but in just a quick live run everything looks really detailed and works really smoothly.

Running on a Athlon XP 2.0 ghz, 1 gb ram w/ 1 gb swap (pfix=ram) and its really quick.

Thanks for sharing.................

Looks nice, I'm going to give it a try. Maybe if all goes well I will replace ubuntu. Just out of curiosity, since its based on debian does it have apt-get or aptitude?

No it doesn't have apt/synaptic but puppy's package manager can install stuff from lenny repo and works good on examing dependencies.
@James C thanks for giving it a spin.

Guy from IRC ran it off usb on 256 MB RAM and 1 GB swap

That works. Apt-get would is nice but as long as I can use debian packages I'm happy. :D Now to download.......

Hi dejan555.

Thanks for sharing your amazing work with KDE3 on dpup-484. So far everything works as expected on a frugal installation, and exceeds expectations in many cases. It certainly outshines the old Kubuntu KDE3.

Incidently, there is an unfinished version of synaptic for dpup-484 here that partially works. However, it should only be tried on a full hd installation or maybe with a hugh save file.

Thanks again,
Jim

There is actually a Kdenlive for KDE 3.5, PupGeek was doing something with it earlier on. Haven't tested it, but I'm pretty sure it's not for KDE4. But you don't need to do anything about it, if people want they can install it I guess. :)

I know there is one but on their official site they don't reccommend using version for kde 3.x because current version is like complete rewrite or something
Kdenlive 0.7.5 Debian packages are now available in Debian sid (unstable). Melt (MLT) is presently only available from Debian sid (unstable). Do not use Debian testing repositories, which offer older versions of Kdenlive.

Well, nothing ever stoped pupians from trying both newer and older software 8) so who wants to have it I guess they can try pupgeek's archive or some other sfs if exists for kde 3, kdenlive versions in both squeeze and testing debian repo are for kde 4.x

Hey Dejan,

Posting from your kdpup now, no problems running in RAM on my Thinkpad T42P 1.8GHz/60gb/1gb/ATI FireGL Mobility T2, 1600x1200/DVD-RW/Intel Pro 2200BG/Gigabit/Epson Stylus Photo RX650 (Inkjet AIO)
I have a 2gb swap partition but it doesn't need it.

'Out of the box', .avi files play perfectly well in full-screen mode and music's fine, as is Gimp and net apps like wee-chat, kopete and firefox, + firewall, control center, hardinfo and KinfoCenter...that's all i've played with so far.

I didn't actually set up CUPS, kdpup obviously sussed it from one of my frugal installs, even though i don't have the printer plugged in at the moment....anyway, it's listed there along with CUPS-pdf, so i'm not about to argue with it.

This is like ('buntu) Ultimate Edition, with all the included apps, only much better because it's way, way, way smaller..

I like it, so i'd better find a partition here with some reasonable amount of space left...thanks very much for a great-looking and efficiently-performing puplet :D

Cheers!
.

I don't know if it is still valid, but gposil did work on apt-synaptic.

This is totally awesome Dejan!

Hi Dejan! :D

Just logging in here to let you know that I, too, am using your KDpup, and have been since I saw you posting about it here in this thread. I have to say this has got to be one of the most magnificent puplets I have ever experienced to date! - and I've been using Puppy since around version 1.0.2 or so. ( My first main Linux distro was Grafpup actually before moving to Puppy. )

I couldn't believe just how complete this was! And each day I'm still finding something remarkable about it which simply blows my mind! Now granted it's larger than the standard Puppy .iso, but yet you've managed to fit so much more for useful apps into this than even PCLOS used to brag about with their "2gigs of apps squeezed into a 700meg CD".

As for the Apt-Synaptic.pet everyone's mentioned? I've been using the one Gposil made found here: http://www.dpup.org/test/dpup482beta5-2.6.30.5/addons/ and if one is extremely careful using it then it does work to install Lenny packages AND has proven to be VERY stable for me and my system ( a DELL 2400 with 2.4gig pIV Intel processor, 512megs of RAM, 128meg cache, and a 160gig HD ). So far I've managed to install Blackbox, the complete LXDE Desktop environment, fbpanel ( for optional use with Openbox ), and a few other packages from Synaptic as well - and all is working fine here! Umm... the only thing I did break was Xscreensaver but I don't use that anyway as I use KDE's internal screensaver and when not using that I prefer the simple xset one as it demands far fewer resources.

At any rate Dejan, I can't sing loudly enough my praises for what you've done and accomplished here. Fabulous mate! Simply a stroke of pure genius!

KDpup has 10 stars in my book! :)

Amicalement!/Cheers!

Howdy Dejan!
Dejan wrote:"...got your email too, hope you got reply."
Hmm... glad you got MY email Dejan! I really am, as this - along with my above post ( and subsequently changed signature file I hope? ) - should hopefully let you know that I haven't been this enthusiastic over a Puppy build/puplet perhaps since the time of Grafpup. :D In fact, I've been spending SO much time now back at the computer since you've posted the .iso file, just playing around with KDpup and having more fun than I can remember ( quite possibly since my days at Mozilla in fact! ) that my poor wife is starting to feel like a "computer widow" once again! LOL!

But getting back to the subject at hand here: As to having received YOUR email? Regretfully my friend, no. :( And I haven't a clue as to why it hasn't come through to me either as I run with very lax spam filteration on my email client...

Perhaps you could try resending? And if you don't hear from me in either a reply email OR a quick note in this thread here in a few days then maybe you should attempt sending it via private message of the board forum? ( Although that doesn't always work either for me unfortunately :( )

Good Luck Dejan! Bonne Chance mon ami!
