Thanks, that worked.

FWIW, I dropped Helix player into Quirky and it is MUCH faster at loading PLS and M3U streams than gnome-mplayer.

The resolution 1920x1200 works now: xorgwizard -> choose -> nv

Optimized the blue wallpaper (better character 'kerning'):

Sad to say but my Toshiba Tecra 8000 having Neomagic MagicGraph 256AV (NM2200) chipset fails to display anything either with Quirky 1.1rc or Quirky-Retro 1.1rc.
Both Wary 020 and Lupu 500 run well. While waiting for Wary (1.1?) I am trying to do some hacking. I just downloaded neomagic drivers for Xorg 7.4 and 7.5.

quirky 1.1 RC Thinkpad R40 sound and video

#34 Post by Béèm »

When playing a video from www.youtube.com video and sound are ok.
When playing a mp4 video downloaded with you2pup, video is ok, but there is no sound.
The same for previous downloaded flv video's from youtube.

wmv and mpg seem to play nicely.

avi's are playing a bit chunky.

quirky 1.1rc, Thinkpad R40, internet connection SNS

Setup with SNS isn't etained during boots.
However /etc/simple_network_setup/connections contains the correct configuration data, but the file doesn't seem to be read at boot.

I have just setup a frugal install of qrky104. It's running beautifully, no problems.

Code: Select all

# report-video
VIDEO REPORT: Quirky, version 104

Chip description:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82915G/GV/910GL Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 04)

Driver used by Xorg:
intel

Video mode used by Xorg:
Resolution: Depth 24 Depth: "Display"
May I make a suggestion? Could you include a new /etc/X11/xorg.conf0 in mesa-7.6-q1.pet with:

Code: Select all

Load "glx"
and

Code: Select all

Load "dri"
as well as a pinstall with:

Code: Select all

gxmessage -title "Install GLX and DRI" -center -bg orange "Please Rerun Xorgwizard to install GLX and DRI"
I think this would be much less confusing for newbies than having to edit xorg.conf manually.

Thanks, J

quirky, Thinkpad R40, laptop running hot

#38 Post by Béèm »

I noticed that the laptop is running hot for the last four or so quirkies.
Very often I get the pop-up.
It happens most often when playing video's.

I don't have this with other puppies.

In Quirky, you have to run the Printer Wizard from the Setup menu once to install some patches. The missing smb symlink is one of them.
Yes, I really should get those fixes that are done in /usr/sbin/cups_shell, done earlier, in Woof when building the live-CD. I have made a note of that, hope to fix it for 1.2.

Line 97: $SUBSTDRV is nv then to replace nvidia don't we want to 'rmmod nvidia' ?

Line 109 $SUBSTDRV is nvidia then to replace nv maybe 'modprobe nvidia' ?
Oops!
I have fixed it in Woof, but too late for 1.1, already uploading it.

Thanks for the help. I have modified the mesa PET package, but the pinstall.sh script makes changes in both xorg.conf and xorg.conf0, so no need to run xorgwizard, just restart X. There is now also a puninstall.sh script that undoes those changes.

Will upload the mesa PET soon -- have broken my rule, will keep the PET name the same.
but will be a couple of hours before I upload it, as currently uploading Quirky 1.1.

The same for previous downloaded flv video's from youtube.
I had a similar problem and it cleared up if one shut down the Firefox or Opera and then played the mp4 again. As soon as I started the FF and went into youtube then the FF owned the sound and mp4 lost it. So a workaround but get the sound back at my place tryit and tell the result? :)

I guess I am the sole person having tested to use spotify on wine in rc1?
Works good in Q1.00 but crash in rc2 from desktop of X to the prompt of linux. Each time. So I am back in Q1 and not using the latest.

Maybe the reason is that in q1.00 I have nvidia through a pet install while in Q104 it installed it itself during set up and that could be the difference?

Edit

Thanks Barry, I try to do as you suggest and report back today.

Run the Puppy Package Manager and install the full Nvidia package.

Yes that looks better indeed. I test spotify now

Edit after test

Nope it did not help. I go test qrky110 now

Edit Q110 one crashed too when loading spotify in wine. Reported about it in proper place I hope.

Back in Q.1.00 and that one survive and just works. Very pleased about Q1

Mainly simply a run-through of xorgwizard to get to a desktop..
1) using the choose branch (nice having a fair-sized list) and entering "ati" gave not much in the way of results (xorg reported x pixels and no h&v refresh rates, no card or display if I recall)
2) probe and edit worked as usual (mp is a lovely thing if you have a 'known-good' cribsheet), xorg got the main display id'd and I filled in and tweaked h&v refresh and such

..then went a bit crazy and did a fair amount of 'damage' playing monkey-with-a-mouse - surprising how many things still work, even as the triangles dominated the d'n'd desktop (squiggles looks good tiled with the citrus-cut jwm and gtk) and panels. Jwm cascades windows nicely, btw. Not too crazy, I removed driveicons so the madness was confined-to-RAM ;)

____________
vidcard0 - RV280 (aka ATI Radeon 9200), AGP
vidcard1 - not used, but also RV280 (switched off in BIOS - aka Radeon 9200SE), PCI (old-style)

SamsungX05 Kernel Panic

#48 Post by alec78 »

Hi all,
@BarryK
Barry,
I have a problem with qrky-110.
I did a fresh pfix=ram boot from the CD, had to select the vesa driver at the graphics stage, graphics came up after the usual blocky flash.
Copied the qrky-110.sfs file to an USB dongle and saved the qrkysave file to the same dongle selecting ext3 file system.
Powered off and then re-powered up. The Samsung failed to boot with the following text.

"Loading personal file /qrkysave 3fs(sdb1)
EXT-fs error (device loop1): ext3-lookup: deleted inode referenced: 24618
# this text was repeated twice then
Loading the 'qrky-110.sfs' main file
EXT3-fs error (device loop1): ext3_lookup: deleted inode reference: 24618
# this text was repeated three times then
Kernel panic not syncing:Attempted to kill init !"

I'm posting this from my Dell Latitude LS using lupu-500.
By the way touchpad tapping works on the Samsung when using lupu-500 and the vesa driver.
Cheers

Re: qret-104.iso
Also has some of same effects within Lighthouse-4.43f

1.
(a) See this and...
(b) also this.

2.
(a) After applying 1a & 1b above...
Lets say I manually save during the session...
And then reboot...
And at shut-down choose not to save...
At reload of the Puppy [Quirky or Lighthouse]...
There is a warning given of an unclean exit at the previous shut-down.

(b) However...
If I choose to save_the_session during shut-down...
The next startup/reload of the Puppy gives no warning.

3. Background:
(a) Using an 8GB Flash Drive, with 6-off 1.3GB ext3 partitions.
So far there's a different Puppy on each of 5 of these.
e.g.
Lighthouse-4.43f
Teenpup Mini 2010 beta
Quirky-1.1 [qret-104.iso]
Lupu-501
Puppy-431-boxpup.iso

(b) Having various strange problems.
e.g.
(b1) GParted cannot see Flash Drive sdd in qret-104 [only sometimes, seeing it now], yet all other Puppies see it OK.
(b2) Some Puppies don't show drive/partition icons on desktop correctly/reliably.
1GB Flash Drive lone partition sdc1 shows mounted when it isn't, or doesn't show at all when connected.
Must be unplugged/replugged to show correctly.
(b3) Puppy loads to black screen with cursor.
(b4) Keyboard won't work until Puppy is rebooted.
