Linux and Proprietary Drivers both ends against the middle

#81 Post by munduruku »

Dear Fellow Linux,

I tested Quirky 1.1 and it worked better than former puppy versions. I could point out the things which have changed for better a thing you already know, therefore, let me, instead, point out some problems I had.
I used RipperX to convert an audio cd into mp3. I burned a data cd with the mp3 songs inside folders. When I tried to open the data cd to copy the mp3 songs, Quirky 1.1 won't allow mounting the data cd mp3, mistaking it for a raw audio cd, directly open the cd and playing it, as a result of that I had to use the excellent, though not up-to-date, german puppy minisys_083 Muppy to open the files I needed. I wonder if Quirky 1.1 could have a Xorg set
out automatically on boot, it only enters on deskto using
the otherwise excellent VESA. I feel very confortable using
VESA and have not much need for 3D acceleration, still
we cannot loose track of the latest develpments, hence
my request, would you be so kind having a look at the /var/
achieved by ARCH LINUX chakra-i686-panora-alpha5-v4.iso and check out if this confuguration could work out with Quirky 1.1?

Just in case any of you speak Portuguese, my
native language, I usually learn about these issues
on the url:

http://www.forumdebian.com.br/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=12415

By the way, I didn't know Quirky 1.1 had the capability
to extract audio files from cd and ended up applying
RipperX instead. After I finish reporting here in the forum
I went right on to add more mp3 to the cd I was building
and, to my surprise, Quirk 1.1 didn't allow me to add extra music to the MULTISESSION CD I was about to have burned, there was a error like non-writable file, music cd cannot add files, enter a valid cd. I am a beginner, I don't know very much about how to make a file writable or not using Bash command lines, and was about to begin to believe the fault was my lack of Linux skills, before fully accepting that conclusion I had a try again with the excellent German puppy minisys_083 Muppy which after ejecting the cd distro I used to try and do the job Quirky 1.1 said was impossible, no sooner I acted pburn all files Quirky 1,1 mysteriously considered non-writable, something about permission, was added to the Multisection CD Quirky 1.1 considered mistakenly closed and after pressing burn there I had the Mp3 CD I needed. All that considered I cannot navigate on puppy minisys_083 Muppy because it is not up-to-date and didn't install the audio drivers in my Intel chipset, Quirky being the best option for Navigation and, who knows, Thanks Barry Kauler Hard Work, in the future, a very workable media station, which I already used to convert some .flv into mp3. God Bless you Barry Kauler! We all love you so much. Keep it up the superb work!

JustGreg wrote:Quirky 1.10 will be replacing Puppy 4.31 for me in a week or so. I found the nv xorg driver works better than the nvidia proprietary driver with my Acer Aspire Revo (Ion nvidia chipset) and AOC LCD (1360 by 768) . An interesting thing is the Puppy 5.0 nv driver does not work, but I have to use the Proprietary nvidia driver pet. A bit strange.

The only problem is with Mplayer. It will not play the mms stream for the "Gulch Short Wave Receiver). Gxine works on it in Puppy 4.31 but not mplayer. Mplayer connects, but no audio is heard. I have set the cache size to 32K and tried both oss (initial setting) and alsa for audio with no luck. Yes, I made sure the volume was up and not muted.

Other than Mplayer, there has been no major problems.
This one works in Q1.00 for me most likely using gxine.

I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

How about adding this to the next version of Quirky?

I have a radeon video controller as well.
When configuring xorg, the radeon driver was configured.
You could edit the xorg.conf and replace the vesa by the radeon one.
Time savers:
Find packages in a snap and install using Puppy Package Manager (Menu).

Please explain. Do you mean only change instances of "vesa" with "radeon"?

Hmm, just tried that, did not work.

And what is the advantage?

I didn't have to do anything special to get the radeon driver used.

In earlier releases the vesa was chosen.
But I must say I didn't notice a difference.
There is even a radeonhd driver. I tried also, but again didn't notice a difference.
Look with the puppysearch link in my sig on f.e. radeon. There are discussions about this issue and for some people it was important to have the adequate drives selected.

Quirky 1.1 xorgwizard: strange/wrong values in setup?

#88 Post by Mysp »

Quirky 1.1 frugal. I have Asus M3A78-EM
ATI Radeon HD 3200 GPU integrated on motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4850+ processor
LCD monitor ViewSonic VG191b (19 inch, native resolution 1280 x 1024).

During setup, XORGWIZARD did following:
1. It suggested and marked 1024 x 768 as default resolution
(nothing strange, Puppy 4.x did the same, I think it just conservative).
2. It offered me also 1280 x 1024, but it wrote:
a) 16bit OK for monitor, OK for card (I tried this, too - but it is quite dark)
b) 24bit OK for monitor, may be not OK for card.
3. I choosed 1280 x 1024, 24bit (it works OK in Puppy 4.x)
and choosed "Test". It seems to work, but also writes BOTH
Horizontal refresh /Vertical refresh as 0 (ZERO)
Is it strange, wrong or can I ignore it?
4. I choosed Tweak, Tweak refresh rate and choosed
60 (instead of default/marked 56 or so).
I repeated Test and Tweak twice or three times.

Monitor seem to work OK now , but I do not know why 1280 x 1024 / 24 bit was identified as may not OK for card and and
ESPECIALLY why after choosing this, it still writes both Hor./Vert refresh as 0 (ZERO).
Should I be worried or can just ignore it? Thank you for advice and apologize my English.

Good call. Under Plugin, I set the Cache Size to 32K and now streams start almost immediately.
I have configured Gnome-mplayer with the mplayer cache disabled. Anyone got any particular thoughts on why that might be a good or bad thing?

gnome-mplayer

Was able to get "dvd" sound partially working when playing from
menu by selecting "en" on edit languages while the program was
running....
The sound is badly broken up and from 10 to 30 seconds out of
synch. Varies in speed.
Loud buzzing, popping noises and occasional runaway temperature climb.

Tried this dvd on 3 different machines with different sound and
video cards.
Plays flawlessly on 4.xx series puppys with ttuuxxxs vlc8.6h lite
or gxine.

Inspiron 700m, Pent.M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb ram.
Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.
Eeepc 8g 701, 900Mhz, 1Gb ram.
Full installs

If I start with the mplayer cache disabled and load an audio CD, mplayer turns the cache back on. Then if the cache size is too small (32k) the playback is choppy.

For people who really want to play CD's on their computer, pCD is a better program.

Gnome-Mplayer seems to work ok for some people and not so good for others. I have found that the cache size does effect how it operates.

Increase the size of your Mplayer cache.

Yes increase cache size worked but it still leaves the CD player speeding up and slowing down.
Increasing the cache size made Mplayer go back to taking a long time to start playing a audio stream from the INTERNET.
I know cache size should have an effect but Gnome- Mplayer seems to be real sensitive to the cache size.

just an idea, I wonder if their is something missing, that Gnome-Mplayer needs to work properly or if it still has bugs. There are several posts, in this thread, about problems people are having.

I appreciate.
I won't have time to test tomorrow, but probably on Monday.
I'll report.

Is there a way to configure your wireless network to use a list of networks to connect to, so you don't have to run the configuration again again and select the network you want to use?
Also...what does the "Advanced" button in the wireless configuration do? The only difference I see is, that the "New Profile" button is misplaced and the "Advanced" button changes to "Basic".
And is there a way to find out which encryption the networks you just found during scanning are using? Would be nice to show it in the list, if possible, so it won't be a try and error to configure it.

G'day,

Gnome Mplayer on its Play drop down menu lists options to watch digital or/and analogue TV. Clicking on either produces no response.

I could watch DTV on gxine in previous Pups via my hybrid card and good antenna.

How do I activate these TV options in Gnome Mplayer?

Thanks,

David S.

Mplayer in Quirky can't play common old realaudio files like those found at one-way.org
http://one-way.org/jesusmusic/eband
These are playable in old Mplayer versions (IIRC I'm still using this one from Tempestuous), without binary Windows codecs or anything :)

This is what Mplayer in Quirky says:

Code: Select all

# mplayer *.ra

Playing arthurblessitt.ra.

Quirky includes liba52, but Mplayer doesn't seem to be compiled against it. I don't know if that's intentional, or a mistake, or because the Mplayer people think they can do without liba52 now...

Installing gxine is simple enough, and works well in quirky. There's gxine-0.5.903-patched-MU
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 16659964d9

It needs the xine-lib-1.1.8, which can be installed from the puppy-4.0 rep in the package manager.

Hmmm.
I just checked in my 4.1.1 install, and neither ffmpeg (Patriot's 0.5 package) nor Mplayer seems to be linked to liba52... I guess maybe it was compiled statically into one of them? Does anyone know about this?

G'day,

Trying to play anything that has sound (mp3, movie clips) produces stuttering like sound from the file or device.
Trying the Alsa wizard, I get the double bark repeated ad infinitum (woof,woof,woof,woof,woof,woof,woof,woof,woof,woof,.. - well, until I kill it).

I just got xine to install from a pet and open my digital TV, but the sound is also a continual stammering.
Previously pet-installed xines in quirky would start to start - that is, the black video frame, a partial image of the 'control' and then just disappear. The console told me there was nothing wrong (when running xine from the console, not the menu). So at least I've now got a working combination of xine, xine-lib and xine-plug-in, but the sound is still faulty.

I recall this quirky xine and sound problem on my desktop has been in a lot of recent quirky pups - I think this is probably the first sound issue I've had, from Puppy 2.something to now. Old Pups are still perfect.

David S.

I've checked through my thirty odd Frugals and find this stuttering occurred in all Pups using the 33 kernel - all 31 kernels and lower Pups playing perfect sound. Has this computer reached its new kernel limit (I must become WARY?) or is there a sound fix available?
