Regarding printing:

Since GTK apps have the "Print to File" option, maybe it's time to retire the venerable CUPS-PDF backend. It may just be confusing people.

Now that your print server is running Quirky with CUPS 1.3.11, you need an additional step. Go here and read the last section titled "Sharing your Puppy Printer".

Hello,

- Testing Quirky 1.1 - 2.6.33.2 - but cant install the latest drivers from ati (fglrx).

this is the output from the ATI install log:

# cat fglrx-install.log
[Message] Kernel Module : Trying to install a precompiled kernel module.
[Message] Kernel Module : Precompiled kernel module version mismatched.
[Message] Kernel Module : Found kernel module build environment, generating kernel module now.
AMD kernel module generator version 2.1
Error:
kernel includes at /lib/modules/2.6.33.2/build/include do not match current kernel.
they are versioned as ""
instead of "2.6.33.2".
you might need to adjust your symlinks:
- /usr/include
- /usr/src/linux
[Error] Kernel Module : Failed to compile kernel module - please consult readme.
#

- It works however when installing ATI drivers (fglrx) with Quirky retro - 2.6.30.5 - then i get:

# cat fglrx-install.log

That's too bad. The Epson Avasys website lists your RX600 as compatible with the epkowa driver and it is listed in the file /usr/share/iscan/usb.

The USB report for my NX415 looks just like yours, except for the ProductID.

The only other thing I can suggest is that you boot off the Live CD with "puppy pfix=ram", install the driver and see what happens.

Does the command "sane-find-scanner" detect anything? Have you tried the scanner with other machines?

Code: Select all

# sane-find-scanner

  # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
  # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
  # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

  # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
  # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

  # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

  # Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
  # can't be detected by this program.
#
Before trying with pfix=ram tried sane-find-scanner with the result above.
As suggested I tried also scanimage -L

Code: Select all

# scanimage -L

device `v4l:/dev/video1' is a Noname Medion/Creatix CTX953 Hybrid virtual device
device `v4l:/dev/video0' is a Noname Medion/Creatix CTX953 Hybrid virtual device
#
Looks like the epkowa driver is active.
When I do

Code: Select all

# scanimage -d epkowa:usb:001:003 >/mnt/home/out.png
#
The image is stored in /mnt/home/out.png.
But when I try with either iscan or xsane, I still get the message that the device is busy or command can't be sent.

Going to try with pfix=ram now.

Forgot to mention that since puppy 3.xx the scanner worked at this machine on 3.xx, 4.xx, and lucid versions (up to the latest 500). This quirky 1.1 (and 1.00 I think) didn't work with the scanner. But I didn't try on another machine.

So tried now with pfix=ram. Xsane didn't work
Installed iscan 2.24.0 and I have the same issue and error message.
Doing the sane-find-scanner, scanimage -L and scanimage with the device to a file did work.

So up to know I use lucid to scan work.
But it could be of interest to find why quirky 1.1 don't work.

I hooked up the laptop Thinkpad R40 on the scanner.
I have exactly the same error messages. In Xsane as well as in iscan.

So it looks there is something quirky in quirky (1.x) with respect to the RX600 scanner.

@Béèm: This is a mystery. Did you try Xsane AFTER you installed the iscan driver?

I have two printer-scanners, an HP and an Epson. Both scan exactly as expected in Quirky 1.1. Maybe someone else who has tried scanning with Quirky can chime in.

[Edit] I tried my NX415 on two other machines and the scanner worked fine both times.

rcrsn51, thanks anyway for trying to help.
To be complete, this is what I did after boot with pfix=ram
No install of iscan 2.24.0
Xsane says no devices detected
sane-find-scanner find the Epson scanner at libusb:001:003
scanimage -L says: didn't find a scanner

Install of iscan 2.24.0
Xsane says: failed to open device epkowa:usb:001:003
Iscan says: failed to send command to device. Check status of scanner
sane-find-scanner says: Epson scanner found at libusb:001:003
scanimage -L says: device epkowa:usb:001:003 is a Epson Stylus Photo RX600 flatbed scanner.

Hope indeed, for the sake of other people with a RX600, that someone can un-quirk this issue.

Thanks for the advice to have the usb statement in epkowa.conf read usb 0x04b8 0x0896 (the code for my RX600 scanner) With Iscan I could scan now.
I applied the same for epson2.conf and can scan with Xsane also now.

battery meter

#130 Post by broomdodger »

Clicking on the battery meter opens a panel with battery info.

Clicking the battery meter again opens yet another battery info...

The problem is they are exactly on top of each other making it look like they will not go away.

Suggestion:

Click on battery meter the battery info is shown.

Click on battery meter when info is showing will hide it, ie a toggle.

I'm actually using Quirky 1.0 but I tried Quirky 1.1 when it came out, and, if I remember right it had the same problem, to wit: GNOME MPlayer didn't work in either one. What I discovered is that when I installed shinobar's big ffmpeg-0.7.pet MPlayer started working in Quirky 100. I have no idea what was missing that the .pet provided. More details at the beginning of this thread.

I just checked in my 4.1.1 install, and neither ffmpeg (Patriot's 0.5 package) nor Mplayer seems to be linked to liba52... I guess maybe it was compiled statically into one of them? Does anyone know about this?
Quoting from http://www.ffmpeg.org/:
AC-3 that is faster than liba52 in 5.1, up to 2x faster in stereo and also supports E-AC-3! Hence liba52 is now obsolete.
...most unfortunate that it breaks some audio files. Perhaps someone should go to the ffmpeg forum/mail-list and make a big noise about this. Perhaps they need to bring back the '--enable-liba52' configure option.
OK, I'm still a bit confused.
I've discovered that ffmpeg in Quirky can handle these files (so Pmusic can play them - we just need to make the file associations for .ra and .ram launch Pmusic).

So I guess there is a bug in the Mplayer in Quirky, not in ffmpeg.

Please find here attached the newest version of HPLIPlite (Hewlett Packard Printer and Scanner drivers) tested in Quirky 1.0 and Quirky 1.1. This version is much lighter than previous ones, since does not contain static ppds. Instead, ppds are generated dynamically for capable versions of cups, such as 1.3.11 in Quirky. (Notice that they are not suited for standard Puppy's 4.3 and earlier versions). This pet depends on library libnetsnmp, which I include also in this message.
I hope that helps.

The pet was build and checked for Quirky.

I have been looking how to make it usable for Lupu, with only partial success: Scanning works, Printing works if launched from
applications like geany, abiword, browser,... BUT does not work from terminal (lpr file). Here I include some workaround to make it partially usable for Lupu, although I hope to not create confusion including it in this Quirky feedback threat.

If you want to test it, and for Lupu only, please do (Note that this is an amended version respect the initial one!)

1. remove module usblp

Code: Select all

rmmod usblp
2. Get the attached libjpeg.so.7.0.0 file and do

Code: Select all

gunzip libjpeg.so.7.0.0
cp libjpeg.so.7.0.0 /usr/lib
ln -s /usr/lib/libjpeg.so.7.0.0 /usr/lib/libjpeg.so.7
ln -sf /usr/lib/libjpeg.so.7.0.0 /usr/lib/libjpeg.so
/etc/init.d/cups stop
/etc/init.d/cups start
3. Make sure to install the printer using the usb backend, and not the hp one, and the hpcups version for the printer driver.

In case you are happy with that, then it is convenient to blacklist the usblp module, since the command in step 1 makes effect only in the running session.

Note added:
The printer works also from command lpr if installing cups-1.4.3 and ALL dependencies from Puppy Package Manager (PPM). In case you try this, please :

1. make first a local copy of /etc/cups/cupsd.conf

Code: Select all

cp /etc/cups/cupsd.conf /root/cupsd.conf
2. Install cups-1.4.3 using PPM, and ALL dependencies
3. Replace the new /etc/cups/cupsd.conf by the old one:

Code: Select all

cp /root/cupsd.conf /etc/cups/

Quirky 1.1 feedback

#136 Post by drblock2 »

Quirky 1.1 is superb! Barry, thanks so much. Here are a couple of small bugs for your collection:

1. Geany - does not open files on a samba/cifs share drive. She/It returns "Value too large for defined data type." This problem has occurred with other distributions (not with puppies). There was a solution suggested in the Arch forum: add

Code: Select all

,nounix, noserverino,
to smb/cfs mount. I was not able to test this as I could not get mount.cifs to work in a console.

Nicoedit is in general a good workaround alternative, but not for German language files that have to be processed in the consle with utilities like sed, grep, etc. Nicoedit saves the special characters in two-bite format (utf-16?) and the console seems to swear by ISO 8859-1. I would greatly appreciate either a fix for Geany (which allows you to choose the character set) or for Nico. In the meantime, I will drag and drop to a local drive.

2. Printing to a ps-file via CUPS-PDF does not work properly. The top and left margins are are ignored. There are various workarounds for producing pdf-files (in abiword, you can preview the file and successfully print from PDF Viewer, OOo has its own pdf export function, but it produces files that are ten times the size of pdf's produced from ps's with ps2pdf in the console). It would be nice to have this function back (no problem in Puppy 4.31).

3. Start-up. One thing I don't like about the console is that it beeps at you for minor infractions like attempting to backspace past the beginning of the line. Early on, I wrote a one-line shell script to turn the beep off. I put this in an executable directory with a link to /root/Startup. No longer works. Have to start it each time by hand.

What was the script?

Have you tried adding to .Xdefaults ?

Here is the script:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh

# Turn off beep
xset b off
I haven't tried your suggestion, but there is another simple workaround. Simply make the file etc/profile.local (if it does not already exist) and add the line: xset b off to it. Now, the beep will be turned off automatically when you boot. Actually, this is a much more elegant solution than the shell script. The same file can be used for your personal aliases, etc.

Just the same, I would like to see the /root/Startup option "reenabled". Too bad I didn't post my "bug collection" in time for consideration in Quirky 1.12, but perhaps some of them have been fixed anyway.
