I tried writing wakepup to 3 different disks and testing them, none worked. I can't download boot2pup either because when i try, it'll open up right in firefox and show a bunch of lines of gibberish. I also tried it in IE but with the same results. Any suggestion or alternative? The old comp. i'm working with won't boot from a cd but will from a floppy. Also, what exact files need to be on a hard drive to boot from it instead of the live-cd, in case i can't get the floppy to work. Thanks for any help I can get.

why not try using smart boot manager floppy to boot your cd instead. i've had 100% success with it booting cd's, regardless of the bios.

the files you need on your hard disk are vmlinuz, image.gz & usr_cram.sfs, which you need to extract from the .iso file using something like isobuster, if your other machine is a windows, or something like:

mkdir /mnt/iso
mount -o loop /puppy.iso /mnt/iso

with linux. (of course you have to use correct name & location of the puppy iso file!).

In case you want to go the route of using a CD, there is also a floppy program to make a CD bootable available from
http://bootcd.narod.ru/. Don't be put off by the Russian text, download the program named bcdl150z.zip.
Has worked without fail for me on more than onel old system.

In clarification of the previous post. The program makes it possible to boot from a CD-ROM drive, even though CD-ROM boot is not supported by the BIOS.
The previous post may have given the impression that the program changes the CD media - it does not.

this is because the server is mis-configured and thinks that .gz files are text files

just right click the link and click Save Link As

I have the boot manager on a disk and it works. Now, how do i use it? There's also another snag i've run into. In my inexperienced blundering with settings, somehow I changed my bios settings so that the cd rom is now not even recognized. I have not a clue as to what settings are required for it to function oncemore.

Bios: Shut down machine. Press start button and immediately after press the function button (particular to your machine) to enter the bios. This could be 'delete', 'f2', 'Esc' - whatever your manual instructs.
Bios settings are normally on a cyclical setting so if you navigate down with tab and arrow buttons you can select by pressing the select (<-+>) until the desired CDrom setting reappears. They haven't been deleted.
Boot sequence: 'FDD' first 'CDRom' second and HDD third.

It doesn't have a cd-rom setting. It asks for cylinders and other values. I tried resetting to default but the cd-rom settings aren't in default. I have a feeling i'm not gonna ever get around to actually installing puppy on it.
