I was in the habit of turning off blinky, parcellite and a few other things after i booted to save CPU. Well, now my parcellite clipboard and the area where it tells me how much pupsave space i have left is gone and I can't get it back. The clipboard icon won't come back either but parcellite is working. I can right click to access it on the desktop.
I have puppy 4.2
I haven't altered any of my theme files or anything else either before this happened or after.
What can I do to fix it?
BTW, I have tried a version clean-up

Try just reinstalling parcellite. And you should upgrade to the latest version if that isn't what you've got. If reinstalling it doesn't work, try booting with the option pfix=clean, then reinstalling it.
Or better, use glipper-lite instead.

Thanks. I will try what you suggest. How do I uninstall the old parcellite? It's not listed in puppy package manager as installed. It's part of the live CD that I installed to my flash drive.

You can't really uninstall the programs that come in Puppy as they are in a read-only filesystem (in a file called something like pup_411.sfs). However, there is a program called petbegone, which basically just hides a package so you can't see it. Petbegone is intended to help people remove programs when they create "remastered" puppies.

Normally I would just install a new version of a program over the top of the version that came in Puppy. If that didn't work I would try petbegone. Even if you want to install the same version of a program as originally came in Puppy, you can do so just by downloading it manually (because it won't show up in petget) and clicking on it.

Thanks, I will try that now. I installed the Parcellite you suggested but that didn't work.

Nope, none of that worked. I have lost the parcellite area as well as the network indicator. I'd love to know how this happened.

That is probably good. What was happening before is that parcellite was running, but it wasn't running properly, or couldn't find its icon or something. Now I imagine the problem is only that nothing is starting parcellite. You should be able to start it by running `parcellite` from a command line, or by clicking on its menu entry (you might need to restart the window manager to see the entry). And you can make it start automatically when Puppy boots simply by linking it (/usr/bin/parcellite) into /root/Startup

And it doesn't come back after a reboot?

I really can't see any reason either it or freememapplet (mentioned in your initial question) would disappear, except either someone or something deleted them (or edited the files that start them), or the filesystem in your save file is corrupted.

Could you tell me though:
- is there a one pixel wide vertical line (black or blue or red or something) to the left of xload? (xload is the graph to the left of the clock)
- what happens if you open a terminal and run `freememapplet`?
- what happens if you open a terminal and run `blinky`

Sorry this took so long.

When I type blinky or freememapplet into the terminal they both open but quit as soon as I close the terminal.

If I use (I forget the name) teminal emulator they open and stay open but in both cases they are free standing. I need to get them to start up on their own and nest in the taskbar as they did originally.

This all started because, I believe, I was always turning them of using the "kill process" function. I'm assuming I need to edit some code?

The pfix=clean didn't restore them.

Yes, I didn't expect them to be swallowed into the tray - I just wanted to see if they actually work still.

No, that shouldn't stop them from running when you restart.

I can't imagine why they wouldn't run, unless you have switched from JWM to some other window manager and tray, or have edited the jwm tray configuration.
They are normally run by this code in /root/.jwmrc-tray:
Code:
      <Swallow name="blinky">
         blinky
      </Swallow>

      <Swallow name="freememapplet" width="34">
         <!-- freememappletdelayed -->
         freememapplet
      </Swallow>

Check if the code is still there, or if it is commented out (like this: <!-- )
And check if this code is in /root/.jwmrc
Code:
<Include>/root/.jwmrc-tray</Include>

I checked my files and the code was there, but the swallow code was wrong. It was spaced really strangely and said "blinky delayed". Any way, I corrected it with the code you provided and checked .jwmrc then rebooted. Everything is back!
Very HappyThanks for your help!

Hi, I also lost parcellite icon. it does not load from boot but yes from command.

I have this code. Do I have to delete the edit tags?

Quote:
<!-- Additional Swallow attribute: height -->
<!-- <Swallow name="blinky">
blinkydelayed -bg "#DCDAD5"
</Swallow> -->
<!-- <Swallow name="xtmix-launcher">
xtmix -launch
</Swallow> -->
<!-- <Swallow name="asapm">
asapmshell -u 4
</Swallow> -->
<!-- <Swallow name="freememapplet" width="34">
freememappletshell
</Swallow> -->
<Swallow name="xload" width="32">
xload -nolabel -bg "#888888" -fg red -hl white
</Swallow>

None of that has anything to do with parcellite.
Like I said before, try linking it (/usr/bin/parcellite) into /root/Startup if it isn't already.
