How to install the JSword Bible & "Module Starter Pack"

#1 Post by BigMike »

This is a JSword "module starter pack" I made since the pet was unable to download the JSword modules.

The starter pack contains"

Bibles
KJV with strongs numbers
Darby Bible
American Standard Version
Updated King James Version

Commentaries
Jamieson-Fausset-Brown
Keil and Delitzch - Old Testament
Matthew Henry's Commentary

Bible Encyclopedia
International Standard Bible Encyclopedia

Topical Bibles
Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Nave's Topical Bible

Lexicons
Strongs Greek Numbered Lexicon
Strong's Hebrew Numbered Lexicon

Devotionals
Spurgeon's Morning and Evening

Theology
Calvin's Institutes

Here is a little instruction to install the JSword module starter pack

1. install the programs
sword, jsword and bibletime from my site:

http://brainwavedesigncentral.net/mike/ ... r=bible%2F

Install these three pets

2. Drag the jsword bin to the desktop from:
- usr/local/bin/jsword

3. Add a bible icon to the jsword bin on the desktop

Then add an icon to the binary by right clicking and
choosing "set icon"

Get the icon here

http://brainwavedesigncentral.net/mike/ ... _bible.png

4. Download the starter pack from:

http://brainwavedesigncentral.net/mike/ ... er-Pack%2F

5. Unzip the starter pack and drag the directories

mods.d and modules to
/usr/share/sword/

Now you should have:
/usr/share/sword/mods.d
/usr/share/sword/modules
/usr/share/sword/locales.d is already present

6. Run JSword

NOTE : To install other modules

1. download them from
http://www.crosswire.org/sword/modules/

2. Then unzip them in some directory

Next unzip it to:

/usr/share/sword/

I found an easier way to install the addons you want to.

go to the archive click on it then extract to /usr/share/sword/

it puts everthing where it needs to be there.

this also works with the starter pack

I haven't tried Jsword yet, but this looks good.
Most of the Bibles/books are ones I've installed on Xiphos.
A couple random ideas for books you might or might not want to include:
1. Treasury of David-Spurgeon's commentary on Psalms
2. I occasionally look at the comments from the Geneva Bible (but others probably won't)
3. The "Apostle's Bible" is a translation of the Septuagint. (This occasionally differs from the Masoretic Text, and the New Testament typically follows the Septuagint. So if I want to look up a cross-reference from the New Testament, I sometimes use this. For an example of what I mean, compare Hebrews 1:6 with Deuteronomy 32:43 in both the Apostle's Bible and either Darby or the KJV.)
4. I look at Robertson's Word Pictures a bit. It's based off the NU-Text, but it is a good look at the connotation of the Greek text.
3 & 4 are the ones I use most.
