Yesterday I spent most of the day very successfully. in Fatdog64
using Openshot (requires the python pet too right?)

Openshot would lock up about every 30 mins.

This happened in the Ubuntu version too and is a fault of Openshot
- not of Fatdog. I have a feeling that Kino would be more reliable but I like Openshot . . .
I overcame this Openshot problem by saving my project and
restarting the recent project after restarting x . . .

However . . . the green button for sound would go to mute
either when I restarted x or just for no reason I am aware of.
Something that did not happen with Ubuntu
and I am unaware of this happening in other Puppys. :?

I am back in a pristine FD64 because
it is fast enough to make a difference
I can feel :D

Openbox (the window manager) is as identical to JWM
as to make no difference. More than happy
to not need JWM - though Fatdog does have it
with much improved code. :)

Should you be running Fatdog
if you have a 64bit setup?

The answer is yes. 8)
If you have a spare 64bit rig
the answer is yes x 2.
If you are thinking of buying a 64 bit rig
(how much fun can one Puppy have . . .)
then go for it.

You will be using cutting edge Firefox.

Puppy will be even faster - you bought 64bit
partly for the speed right?
Fatdog = Fitdog

Kirk and Jamesbond deserve
your feedback and support.

What can we expect from the future?
Fatdog64 slim?
Fatdog64 gets the puppeee poodle makeover?
More?
We are setting the future, now. :D

DC
I made a mistake, sorry  Don't use the new puppyinstaller.gz - it will not work for full-install

The reason is, the full-install installation code contains very specific instruction on which files to copy and how to boot puppy. It won't work for Fatdog64 - because the list of files are different. The installer that comes with Fatdog64 has been heavily updated by kirk to do know how to do this. Using the plain-vanilla copy from woof won't work. So I guess I'll have to give up on this - too much infrastructure code there for me to swallow :( (the diff between the woof version and Fatdog64 version are close to 500 lines  )

Revolvere, sorry for the incomplete instruction. Please open terminal and do this. After you do this, you will find a file in /root/spot which you can upload to the forum.

Code: Select all

synclient -l | gzip -9 > /root/spot/synclient.gz
Yeah the KMS is a work in progress ... so please bear with it, unfortunately.

Lob, yes openshot requires python pet. The openshot build (including the one in Ubuntu) calls for the latest bleeding edge version of all the tools used. I had to update everything - ffmpeg, libx264, etc etc. Living on the bleeding edge, however, has its drawbacks - like the problem you face, unfortunately. If you pull out the code from the repository at the wrong time, you may get a bad copy :( I'll say let the code evolve a bit, and I'll build another pet a while later.

Restart X should be just that, though - restart. It shouldn't mute your sound. Does the speaker icon disappear? Or is it still there, just that sound is changed to mute?

BTW - how's the native 64bit version of XaraLX from kirk compare to the 32-bit sfs you are using? Any performance gains?

PS: I like the the dog logo as well :D

XaraLX seems as fast as it always is
It is very highly optimized anyway
so everything has always been instant.
So I can not say it is any different.
Just so pleased to be able to use in 64 Puppy mode
- just as others are pleased to run Puppy on elderly clunkers

At the moment I am trying to output from
Openshot - this is one area that is not perfect
(Openshot are aware of this)
http://www.openshotusers.com/help/en/ar01s22.html
My latest epic is being thwarted
by the special effects department . . .

The FD64 download direct to hard disk rather than Puppy ram file (or whatever it is called) is a useful innovation

Back to trying another codec to output to . . . :)

Another thing - I do not know if there is a default configuration file
for openbox? I would assume yes.
If there is, the 200ms to get a screen to maximise by double clicking the title bar
is too quick
(it is physically impossible - except as an exercise in reflexes)
Bring that up to 300 or 400ms and it is physically possible (can
also be done in the configuration settings)

Yeah I've almost always crashed when I try to output from the pre-defined mode (ie DVD, Youtube, etc). If I choose "All formats", then choose the actual format, and then go to the "Advanced" tab to set my bandwidth etc, I've got better luck :)

Yup, brilliant - it doesn't eat your save file (and when you switch between puppies, all your downloads are still accessible).

Yes. First show the desktop (ie, you can see your desktop background). Then right-click anywhere on that background. Choose Openbox/obconfig (last menu at the bottom). Go to the "mouse" tab. Your 200ms double-click to maximise is there - change it as you wish :D

Here is the openshot in FD64 film - it is about 7 minutes
and had a lot more edits - maybe too many
This earlier version I was able to output - finally
http://www.youtube.com/watch#!v=gcrPwJ_hElw

. . . before I forget USB key drives continue
flashing even when no longer reading or writing
No idea why - just reporting it . . . :)

Internet connection not working

#47 Post by oldroy »

Thank you for all of your work on this project.

I am using it now with the Fatdog64 beta3 live cd on a "Lance Armstrong" HP Laptop (Actually a rebranded Compaq.) and everythng but the audio works well.

AMD Turion 64
1 gig memory
eth0: Realted RTL 8139/8
wlan0: Wireless b43 pcmcia

Rebooting from the Fatdog64-500rc3 live cd and attempting to load b43 ( or anything else for that matter.) results in the following error message:

Loading b43 failed with the following message:
WARNING: Deprecated config file /et/modprobe.conf, all
config files must belong into /etc/modprobe.d/.
FATAL: Module b43 not found
Maybe try a different driver

Roy,

Try booting with pfix=ram, and see whether it works. There is a kernel change between rc3 and beta3, so the old save files don't work anymore. Also, if there is fd64-500.sfs (from beta3) laying around in your harddisk - make sure to remove it, otherwise Fatdog will use that instead of the one in your CD-ROM.

Lob,
Great video ! So that's what England look like :) I'd like to see more of your work :D

I have no clue about the flashing USB drive ... is it flashing all the time? or only some of the time?

cheers!

Great video ! So that's what England look like
We are in World Cup football fever
English flags everywhere . . .
The film starts near the site of Tootings old football ground
and finishes alongside the new one
(not that you would know from the footage)
I will try more. Thanks for the encouragement.

So happy to be editing with a
cheapo handycam and Puppy64
I have no clue about the flashing USB drive ... is it flashing all the time? or only some of the time?
As soon as you plug it in
it flashes and does not stop
Barry has a similar problem and solved it
. . . can not remember exact details . . .

Having the same problem as Roy. A restart, or fresh boot from the pup save file gives the error message "WARNING: Deprecated config file /et/modprobe.conf, all
config files must belong into /etc/modprobe.d/."
X fails to start even when entering xwin at prompt after error message, also can't access xorgwizard. New install of rc3 today so no old save files. Problem has occurred on external flash and external HD. Xorg works fine with pfix=ram. Also tried running xorg from within Fatdog, then saving, same problem occurred. Love everything else so far, Automation is amazing.

This isn't a problem, it's harmless.
X fails to start even when entering xwin at prompt after error message, also can't access xorgwizard.
Run xorgwizard-old. This is the original xorgwizard.

That's odd. If it works with pfix=ram, it should work when installed. Make sure you don't have fd64-500.sfs laying around somewhere in your disk or USB flash. Please upload a copy of /var/log/Xorg.0.log

cheers!

Thanks to this thread http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 184#426184 I'm made aware of Imagination, a DVD slideshow maker.
Pet is now available in repo. Imagination requires sox, which is also available, but if you have already installed openshot-all-in-one, you don't need it (openshot-all-in-one already includes sox).
For your enjoyment. Cheers!

look forward to some imagination - just watched the demo here
http://imagination.sourceforge.net/
many thanks :)

There is a nice presentation maker that uses 3d
rotating boxes (only seen it working in puppeee)
that looks very cool - what is the name of that program?

I am glad to report that Firefox my main program usage
in Fatdog64 has been stable and 'just works'

Jamesbond thank you for the suggestion. I removed the old file per your instructions and rebooted with the puppy pfix=ram command.

The Realtek rtl-8139/8 came up in the Net-Wizard and I am using it now as eth0.

Unfortunately the B43 wlan0 module doesn't work but does get detected with and works with lupu so some fiddling around is in order.

Some ubuntu forums indicate that drivers for this thing are proprietary Broadcom software that has to be downloaded from their website.

Or maybe the switch for the thing has had an attack of flakiness.

That thing is called pdfcube, it took me awhile to get it right (the original source was buggy). It's available in the repo now. Note you need gtkglext to run it. Unfortunately it's only for live presentation, you can't record a live video out of it.

EDIT: I'm thankful to Jemimah for bringing out these little gems :)

That thing is called pdfcube
[Lobster faints]
I knew there was a reason I like to be on the cutting edge - it is getting to use great programs first . . .
Look forward to using that . . .

As you wanted to see more of England with the help of Openshot . . .
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7E5x-jSAbJM
(sorry can put URL link around Youtube clips for some forum reason)

This is basically going to see 'The Crucible' in Regents Park Open Air Theatre.
We start off in the bus, sitting at the front, we were lucky enough to see the red arrows fly across the millennium wheel. It is in the video but was more impressive to watch - Queens birthday . . .
Happy Birthday Queen Dude.
Just before that you will see spook central - home of MI5 - lovely building very near to the Houses of Parliament
Regents Park is almost as good as SecondLife - maybe better
People come to have picnics, take wedding photos, tight rope walking, hang out,row in the lake, etc.
Some is briefly in the video

I think I am really pushing Openshot
It crashes as I move through the video or jump to markers
- still usable and the same happens in Ubuntu - so not Fatdog64.
The program aims to be stable and that will increase over time I hope.

Anyway I am now using Fatdog64 as my main system because of the cutting room edge capabilities

drag file into pdfcube
and use c + a keys to move through demo
works OK here (demo is the help file)
