Intro to Puppy booklet
Update
Feb 2006 - no pics - rtf format - 81k
http://www.yourfilehost.com/media.php?c ... e=man8.rtf
I have been working on this 7 page Intro to Puppy
It gets people introduced to Puppy and downloading and setting up to boot from CD
I enclose it in three format:
Abiword (362k), Word Doc(467k) and HTML(328k)
It is the first time I have used Abiword in 1.0.7 and I was very impressed. Abiword was fast and stable - very good indeed. My tendency has always been to use OpenOffice - but Abiword proved fine.
I tried to output to PDF this came to 1179k and some of the images were lost. Not good.
The HTML output had the ability to embed the images. I liked the sound of that, so saved in this format - the formating is weird in this output and if you look at the source you can see the embeded image info. So I would recommend Abiword or Word Doc as truer to the original doc
I hope it is found to be useful

. . . Oh and if you are wondering where the "I" in Introducing went - it was me pressing delete at the wrong time in mtpaint (see the above image)

Very cool. I was just thinking of doing something similar for Grafpup, as someone just sent me a very nice pdf document about Grafpup in French which made me think about the fact that I have nothing similar to it in English. That's a neat trick with the embedded html images, although it looks more professional in the other formats. I'll see if I can figure a way to do a pdf conversion.

slight edits
That's great Nathan - did you import and export from Open Office?
I have placed the HTML online but in the slight edits or upload seem to have lost the embedded images - oh [sulk] - where'd they go?
Embedded code still seems to be there . . .

I was going to just exprot to postscript and then from that to pdf, but I had the same problems with images disappearing. I'm sure I could have gotten it resolved but I just went with OpenOffice and had no problems from that point.
Lobster is right about how far Abiword has come, though. I had a lot of problems with it in earlier incarnations but it seems rock solid now.

Great work
Great work, Lobster - just remember to keep the images and HTML file in the same directory when you use HTML, and upload all to your server.

Thanks guys
I have added another section to the online version
http://www.zen45800.zen.co.uk/puppy5/man10page.html
"What is Linux" - it deals with command line needs
I also added the images (as non embedded) so they should be visible even from Internet Xploder

Lobster, another option for creating pdf copies of your html is htmldoc, which eric veenstra has provided a puplet of here:-
http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.p ... ht=htmldoc
using on commandline with :
htmldoc --webpage -f man10page.pdf man10page.html
gives a 318k sized pdf, which i think is compareable withyour original html source of 56k + 213k of .png files.
i remember with the windows gui version you could select maximum compression for pdfs, but i'm not sure whether that's available with commandline.

Lobster,
I just thought i'd mention htmldoc as it offers a degree of pdf compression. using scribus to output your man10page.html as pdf, what size do you get?
actually i just had another look on the web & got this link for htmldoc:-
http://www.htmldoc.org/htmldoc.html
Chapter 8 details all the commandline options, including compression, so using this:-
htmldoc --webpage --compression=9 -f man10page.pdf man10page.html
i get a pdf of 303k. while this is only a marginal reduction in size, if you're going to produce larger docs, it could be worth considering as an option.
cheers,
ps whatever you do keep out of that pot!

I have just added another 2 pages - will upload a new version soon
- Have not tried Scribus output yet but your compression is certainly good - it is possible I can create or use smaller or even no images BUT I feel the images are very comforting and encouraging
I will have a go with Scribus - I think Nathan has a package at the Grafpup.com. I did use Scribus quickly (it was included in one version of Puppy - version 1 I think) and found it very usable.
Many thanks for your advice.

OK I have added more pages
and tried some more experiments
I tried the compressed abiword formats (they seemed to compress knocking about a third off the size but did not display)
I was also able to get more info on each page by using two columns and this format should be available on Windows, Linux and Mac
So this is my latest version with info on Linux and simple command line usage:
Rich Text Format
http://www.zen45800.zen.co.uk/puppy5/man6.rtf
(467k)
I did download Scribus and looked at it again briefly but to be honest Abiword is working out as sufficient so far . . .
As soon as more info for Puppy 2 is available I will concentrate on making the introductory manual for that

Good intro
This is a rather good intro, Lobster.
I know you intend adding to this...but just wondered if you'd have the time to add an explaination for beginners re. the boot options at start up and the differences eg load entirely in memory vs having a pup file on HD, etc.
Its a common query I get from people I introduce puppy to....and I think it would completely round off your introduction to getting puppy up and working.
what do ya recken ?

boot options
"educate yourself first" Lobster - ratz...I was hoping you'd educate me.
One of the options is an odd looking word that has four or so letters that meant nothing to me.
(I keep meaning to do a search to find out more or just what it is refering to.)
New users ask me what it is when they see it but as yet I don't know.
(Though there must be an explaination in here somewhere.)
...but as you say in Pup2 it won't apply.
laptops
In the content of your intro Barry mentions the use of a laptop.
There is a non windows laptop that came out in the 90s..a small netbook by Psion.
Some clever chaps have got linux to work (kinda) on these. Only wish I was (or someone was) smart enough to get puppy to work on one. (The current Psion netbook pros now have windozs.)

I used to have a Psion PDA - very good it was too
Anyway - will add this info to the manual
Anyway - will add this info to the manual
The standard release of Puppy Linux 1.0.7 displays a boot menu with 5 options (Option 6 is hidden)
Pressing "Enter" will select the first option and speed up boot time
(see the isolinux.cfg in the CD image for each version's options):
Option 1 (or no input) Normal boot (default)
Option 2 Normal boot, no ACPI
Option 3 Ask which partition for pupxxx, no ACPI
Option 4 Run totally in ramdisk, no ACPI
Option 5 First boot, force multisession
Option 6 (uses memdisk for the kernel image) [not in the menu] (hidden)
ACPI=Advanced Configuration and Power Interface
ACPI transfers responsibility for power management to the operating system
1 Is the default
2 Use if having difficulties especially with Laptops
3 If you have several hard disk partitions you can call different pup001
to boot with different parameters
4 The first three options place a file on your hard disk called
pup001 This option runs in stealth mode. Your hard disk is not
touched, no file is created. It also means you have to enter
your keyboard, mouse and graphic details, set up your connection etc
5 Only use this if creating a CD or DVD recordable version of Puppy
tThat is data is save on CD or DVD - Further investigation required
- do not just select. You need to set up Puppy FIRST to use this option
6 Developer option

I have removed the pics (smaller file for dialup users) - added the boot up info
It is now only 10 pages
Be interested if the format can be imported into MS Word
