I did a search for "cpu scaling tool" and came up empty so am posting this spup 040-related question here as it applies to the Acer I am troubleshooting.
A Forum discussion (see link following) says that the Acer's, and other "economy" brand laptops, have marginal cooling systems which are sensitive to the version of the OS.
http://www.avforums.com/forums/laptops- ... tesco.html
I thought I would activate the CPU Scaling Tool to see if it helps with the overheating problem we are experiencing.
Is the AMD K8 the correct selection in the CPU Frequency Scaling Tool for an AMD Athlon 64 x2 dual-core processor QL-64 (2.1GHz, 1MB L2 cache)?
Also, what is the "trick" to get TopView to show both CPU's?

Danger from attempting connection to a ttySL0 modem!
I received this in a posting by bopapu in my new modem-support thread:
It appears that all is not well with the slmodem driver or executable. The problem seems to corrupt not only a pupsave file, but also the partition where it resides! However, an automatic filesystem check seems to restore the partition.
I also filesystem-checked the pupsave, resulting in the following:

The user sees "no carrier" when attempting to connect to a ttySL0 modem device. I recreated the problem in my test PC and found the problem to be more dangerous than it appears. My reply is here: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 842#433842rerwin I downloaded the spup 0.4 beta with kernel 2.6.34.1 and my modem motorola sm56 id 1057:3052 class 0703 is recognized but does not connect.

G'day,
Further to my desktop's sound problem with new kernels:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=56162
spup-004 based on 2.6.34.1 also gives echoing or stuttering sound with the exception of mplayer which runs DVB and audio OK, but echoes slightly on closing.
No other unmentioned problem found so far with a frugal spup-004.

Anyway tried the new spup 040 both with and without the previous save file.
In both cases the Network Wizard and Roaring Penguin seem to work at first. RP status reports a working connecting, yet no pages open in Seamonkey. Tried the 2 files under /etc again, but to no avail. Of course without internet connection I cannot install the package 'tcpdump' from the official Slackware repository.
I am not as versed as some of the other members here; so this seems to be as far as I can go.
I am just wondering why this pppoe problem occurs in spup, but Quirky and Lupu are not affected?
Just a final thought: Could someone make the missing tcpdump package available, so it can be downloaded with another Puppy and then installed to spup offline? It seems to be hard or rather impossible to find via Google.
Sorry Barry for my delayed response. I was offline for a while due to some extraordinary summer weather we are having in Europe.SOLUTION:
Need Internet connection, run Puppy Package Manager, install package 'tcpdump' from the official Slackware repository.
Then you will have libpcap.so.1.
Then you will probably find the the previous pppoe-start works, but I would appreciate if you can test the method I posted also, see if that works.

I have "pfix=fsck" in the kernel line of my GRUB on all of the computers here.
I have suffered too many corrupt save files and other problems in the past - it slows the boot but I am unaware of any other problems introduced.
I am also using ext3 rather than ext2 in hopes that will also prevent trouble.
As a result I cannot see how a corrupt save file could have caused Wifi to suddenly start refusing to connect.
WDYT?

my problem seems different than yours in that i can easily connect and reconnect. but just as easily automatically disconnect. this doesnt happen in puppeeerc7 or spup03.
my thoughts are not based in relevant knowledge so are not posted. i just do testing and reporting.WDYT?
Should I expect this driver/module to work in Puppy SPUP 040?
It looks as though it wants to install in /usr/lib/modules/usb/media but there was no previously existing directory like that.
Once I know if this should be SPUP 040 compatible I can eliminate that as a reason it isn't working and create a new thread to chase the gtkam problem.

http://saillard.org/linux/pwc/files/
EDIT: I tried copying the module to: /usr/lib/libgphoto2/2.4.8 but gtkam does not appear to "see" it. Do I need to copy and rename one of the ".la" files and edit it to match the pwc.o? There is a mention in the comment text of the .la file that I looked at which said the file was necessary for linking.

Wifi works fine on my CF-29 and Z500 laptops but not on the CF-28 and ACER Aspire 5525 laptops.
I can find no setting anywhere that is causing them to fail to connect.
There is plenty of signal (56 of 70) and everything else is the same - other than they are different laptops with different Wifi nics than the other two.
All four have worked fine previously - so it points to some anomaly in the SPUP 040 setup for Wifi ...
EDIT:
I am sorry to say that the problem is in Barry's Simple Network Setup. Dougal's works fine in SPUP 040 on both computers. I just deleted the savefile and started over with Dougal's and Wifi is fine.

mplayer sound distortion
I discovered that some hardware has a quirk with mplayer.
Ordinarily mplayer sets the volume level to highest when it first launches
with a sound file. With some machines such as mine, this causes distortion.
There is two possible solutions:
1) set the preference setting ‘Mplayer Software Volume Control Enabled’
2) Put the line
in .mplayer/config which is hidden in /root
This apparently stops Mplayer from changing system-wide volume

Note that Spup 0.4 already has tcpdump installed. That problem was in 0.3.wuwei wrote:Thanks upnorth for your links.
I downloaded the package with another Puppy and installed it in spup to /usr/sbin. Yet, I still can't get pppoe to work properly. From the PPPOE GUI "Status" I can see that I should be connected. Still Seamonkey does not open any web page at all.
At my wit's end....
As to why it is still not working, I don't know. Thanks for trying to help.
I wish that I could get access to a pppoe network to experiment on.
Did you try the alternative method that I posted here, in Spup 0.4?:

alsaconf
In /usr/sbin/alsaconf, when restarting alsa at line 907/etc/init.d/alsa would be executed, but it doesn't have a restart option, only start and stop. In my testing this failed to restart alsa (no sound) until I rebooted. I fixed this by changing the beginning of /etc/init.d/alsa to Of course another fix would be to have alsaconf execute $rcalsasound with a start instead of restart.

Hi All,
I'm a newbie so don't know if my reporting will help. Of the recently released iso's Slackpup is the only one to boot to the desktop when I probe for a video driver. In Lucid and Quirky I have had to choose Xvesa as the computer freezes otherwise.
Wifi is working intermittently for me on Slackpup. I was having the same problem in Quirky but NOT in Lucid. If I use Dougal's network setup it works for only a short time. Using Barry's network setup it lasts longer. Oddly when I first boot up and try to use Barry's straight away it won't work but if I use Dougal's, wait for it to cut out, and then use Barry's again it works. Weird.
Anyway thought I'd let you know.

-PCI Devices-
Network controller : Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11a/b/g
**Wifi problems:
Can connect using Network Wizard but not with Simple Network Setup however connection is not remembered through a reboot.
Connection drops periodically see dmesg output ++++1++++ below - but is reconnected with this command:
iwconfig wlan0 essid xxxxxxxxx
SAMBA via pNethood worked but the new Samba tools did not work for me - the buttons when clicked didn't seem to do anything.
**Modem problem:
Tried to force load modules agrmodem and agrserial - dmesg output ++++2++++ shows error messages - do I need to load something else??
**Sound problem:
Sound is muted on reboot and then springs into life after a time delay.
Other than these problems - much better with far fewer problems than recent tries to use lupu501, qret-120 and wary-030.
Successes were that mplayer played dvb-t ok and webcam worked out of the box.
Also tried on my AMD desktop and that seemed OK but on my Thinkpad 600 spup would not boot - strangely it started to boot and read stuff off the cd but then was unable to read the spup-040.sfs file and stopped - I guess I need a retro version for this age of hardware.
