PostPosted: Wed 07 Jul 2010, 23:13    Post subject:  Epson Stylus S21 - Solved
Subject description: Will not work properly, need help (Please)

Hi all
After 8 weeks with a puppy I have hit my first serious problem, can not get my printer to work.
I am using puppy 5.01 (with devx 501 sfs) as a frugal install on a 3200mhz amd chip with 2Gb of ram and a 500Gb SATA hard drive.
The printer (Epson Stylus S21) (USB) is supported and will install with CUPS. but when I try to print nothing is being printed but cups says the job has been completed. CUPS recognises and comunicates with the printer as the light on the printer flashes when I try to print.
The printer will work perfectly on other operating systems (windows and sme server)
Have tried installing drivers from epson, various linux sites, even reinstalled cups 1.4.4, reinstalled gutenprint 5.2.5 all carried out seperatly on a virgin system so not to compond the problem.
Even have tried the above on different versions of puppy (4.3.1 up to quirky 120 and lupi-209) without sucsess.
I have been trying for 3 weeks now without sucsess and wonderd if anyone had anymore ideas before I pull what is left of my hair out.
Thanks
Don

The Gutenprint drivers are pretty reliable so I'm surprised that the S21 driver doesn't work for you. I did a simulated install and it seems OK. Here are some trouble-shooting steps.

1. Open the file /etc/cups/cupsd.conf in a text editor.

2. Change the line "LogLevel info" to "LogLevel debug"

3. Restart CUPS with the command: /etc/init.d/cups restart

4. Print a test page for your printer.

5. Go to /var/log/cups and open the error_log file.

6. Start at the bottom and work up, looking for some error message.

I printed a test page using abiword, and on reading the log it looks to me as it ran alright, (1633 lines) (nothing marked error at all) but if it was not marked error I would not know if it was right or not.
According to the logs it should have printed but did not print

had a look at the cups forum and someone with the same printer could not find a solution either, I am now going to visit epson and see if I can find the generic driver
Thanks

Here is a PET for the generic Epson driver. When you install your printer in CUPS, the model will be listed as "Epson Lite"

A better way to test your printer is from the CUPS web interface. Print a test page from there and watch for error messages.

That's good news. But we don't know if the problem in 5.01 is the version of CUPS or the version of Gutenprint.

Here is something you can try. Using 4.31, go here and upgrade both CUPS and Gutenprint. Then try your printer.

installed gutinprint 5.2.3 no change to the printing still working fine

uninstalled gutinprint 5.2.3 and installed CUPS 1.3.11 tried to print and paper was just feeding through printer (had to turn it off to stop it)

reinstalled gutinprint 5.2.3 without uninstalling CUPS 1.3.11 and printed cups V1.3.X test sheet no problem

added new printer (same one different name) and it didnt print, turned printer off and back on (to clear cache?) and printed CUPS V1.3.X test page again successfuly.

tried to print from abiword and that worked.
Still have old list of printers so still installing as epson stylus s20

Don

edited to say:
Going to try the same with 5.01 (as even with cups 1.3.11 the interface was still brown and not white)

the link you posted me to the thread:
How to upgrade printing in puppy 4.3.1

From there the link to cups 1.3.11 took me to the thread
hardware/printers/Common UNIX printing system V1.3.11
The second page down, item number 4 gives you a download link for the 5.2.3 pet from www.puppylinux.asia

Hope that helps
Don

Thanks. Just out of curiosity, did you ever try the S20 driver in the original Gutenprint in Lupu?
