Minimum Hardware Requirements?

#1 Post by gegenteil »

Hi,
I searched up and down and could not find any hardware requirements...
Could you give me a tip on that one ?
Thanx,
Ron

The only hardware requirement I know of is enough RAM for Puppy to run entirely in RAM; 128 MB is considered to be the minimum required to keep Puppy happy.

I am running puppy 1.02 on an old Toshiba laptop that has a 2gb hard drive and 32k ram. It works, but i did a hard drive install. It did work very well as a live CD also. So, potentially the minimum RAM is 32K?

A basic guide;

128 mb ram = to run everything in RAM ie: Live CD.

~64 mb to run on most systems, say if you have the pup100 file written to the hard drive.

Less, if you do a hard drive install and/or have a swap partition.

Pentium 1 or better processor. However, 486 systems seem to work OK with enough ram.

Laptops sometimes share memory with the video card, so as you go down in ram on one of these laptops, performance suffers, or Puppy will not work at all.

Again, this is a basic guide, as Puppy improves, the ram requirments also have decreased. Some have been able to run with less ram, others run into issues.

Try to stick with the newer release, as performance seems better.

There are a number of posts on user experience with low ram systems.

Your experience may vary!
I love it when a plan comes together
