AbiWord 2.2.7 why? |
|
This message ins't intended to be as harsh as it may sound. Puppy continues to be one of the most exciting Linux releases around. But this printing bug is very important to Puppy's future.
Why has Puppy continued to use the upgraded Abiword (from version 2.0.12 to 2.2.7) when printing is still somewhat hosed? Printing is one of the most important features of software for mainstream users, and few mainstream users are going to understand how to implement work-arounds.
I would urge Puppy to keep major programs that are disfunctional in important ways on the back burner and ensure that every release (i.e. 1.0.3) is fully functional in all important ways. Otherwise, the message being sent to the large pool of potential mainstream uses is "Puppy isn't for you. Puppy is for experts, tinkerers, and computer gurus."
This would seem to be an important issue of release philosophy as Puppy deservedly marches up the rankings on Distro Watch.
Faithfully,
Andy Figueroa

From the AbiWord site (http://www.abisource.com/):
AbiWord v2.2.8 Released
This release has seen a lot of bugfixes, polish, and cleanups as we are nearing the end of the 2.2 release cycle. We are working hard towards AbiWord v2.4, which is shaping up nicely.
This release is mostly a bugfix release, with some minor new features. The changes from 2.2.7 to 2.2.8 include, amongst others:
# Make Text Folding actually work
# Fix text justification on MacOSX
# Initial support for the OpenDocument (.odt) file format
