So, what I most likely did wrong was to do a restore of only the C drive rather than the full restore as I had wanted to not have to reinstall Puppy Linux.
Of course the install of Grub for Dos may have overwritten the information on the MBR that Windows Genuine Advantage was looking for.
And that makes me wonder if an install of grub with Puppy on a hard drive containing Windows would also cause Windows Genuine Advantage to say it could not verify if the Windows install was legal.
But I absolutely refuse to install that piece of crap on Windows XP Pro on that laptop now.

How to bypass online censorship:

http://apcmag.com/bypass-online-censorship.htm

:::::::::

Maybe of interest to some.

The section of the article that I liked was >>> Use Ultrasurf

" " Ultrasurf is a piece of software designed for use in
repressive regimes to circumvent web filtering measures.
The makers claim that every time there’s a major crackdown
or world event, its use leaps. "

http://ultrasurf.us/index.html

This was simple enough....I don't need complicated.

Download...Ultrasurf...RHS >> great big button

No install...it unzips...if not use 7Zip..free...fast
unzips most things...including ISO files

Make a shortcut to the program.

Click shortcut ...and IE browser starts.

There is a video on the bottom of the Ultrasurf page.

But I don't like Internet Explorer.

I use Palemoon Portable....Firefox without the crap.

" Ultrasurf will open IE by default, but we can change that. "

So I needed the >> Add-on for Firefox

" Firefox users need to download the firefox add-on besides

You have to allow Firefox or Pale Moon to install the add on.

After mucking about I discovered a little...icon message thingy

I was repairing an XP system for someone and don't have internet where I was working on it. I could use my linux(Saluki) laptop to get internet access but that didn't help for fixing xp.

So I used this, WSU offline updater.

You download the latest version, unpack it. Then go to the /sh folder and run the program there, it's like UpdateDownloader.sh or something, which would be run from command in the folder ./UpdateDownloader.sh

For Saluki I know there were 3 different things I didn't have that I needed to install to get it running, but can't remember all of them off the top of my head. I think it was cabextract and two other things. I do know that for the first two I Googled for the pet files and found them no problem and the third one I had to use the Ubuntu deb file but also installed no problem

The sh script will go through a series of question, ask if you want to download the service packs, ask the language, which version windows it is and a few other things.

I opted not to do the service packs (the install was an xp sp3), english, etc. I told the downloader to go (it uses wget) and downloaded it to a flash drive.

I then plugged the flash drive into the windows machine, and ran something from the WSU home directory, I'm pretty sure it was UpdateInstaller.exe.

Sorrry; usually my instructions aren't quite so vague. I just remember it being pretty intuative and easy to use.

Once you run the update installer, it goes to the folder it downloaded the updates to and installs them onto your Windows machine. Amazingly simple.

This is a brief note about passwords, simple stuff that I thought I'd mention.

This last system I did had a BIOS password and the main user was password protected.

BIOS password: disconect the power. Then remove the motherboard battery, then let it sit a couple of minutes. Put the battery back in, power it back up, go into BIOS and set it however you want, password is gone.

And to get past the user name password, he had neglected to set the Administrator password. So when windows boots up, hit F8 rights as it is starting, boot into safe mode, leave the password blank after typing in the user name Administrator and you're in. Change any username password to whatever you want at that point.

Again, most of you hackers know all this stuff, but thought I'd post it again for fun. 8)

Many try to put all windows installation-disc/iso together in one USB-drive.
My way is the easy one and really work, no programming skills required.
How to create/prepare windows 8, 7 and xp all in one USB-drive ready for system installation.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2hQ3zEmsts&feature=plcp

You can create it with puppy linux:
Run Gparted and make two partitions.
Extract w7.iso to first partition, you just created or copy over all the files from your w7 DVD if you dont have the iso file.
Do the same thing with w8 just to the second partition.
Install Grub4dos.
Edit Grub4dos menu.lst:

title W7
root (hd0,0)
chainloader /bootmgr

title W8
root (hd0,1)
chainloader /bootmgr

For install xp from usb see the link in this thread
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 5&start=15
and after that copy everything to fist partition.

I dont have vista install-disc/iso for testing, but it should work also.

enjoy!

Win 8 users...no keys...be aware >>> back up your keys.

From Whirlpool Forum.

Sorry Chris, slight OT

I fixed my windows with Puppy today.

I have a dodgy IDE connection on my MoBo but 2 SATA drives working perfectly, one with a 200GB NTFS partition (not that that matters) on the first partition (that does matter).

I used dd to clone the IDE partition on to SATA drive. The original partition was only 100M. The cloning was successful but I had to reclaim the other 100m of space. How, well Gparted offered to do it in one step. Neat. Then all I had to do was dd the mbr of the original drive to to start of the new hard drive (That's why being on the first partition was important.)

That went well, win 7 booted, ran chkdsk, rebooted and all was well. I didn't even have to alter my grub4dos entry as the cloning preserved the UUID (GUID in windows speak) from the original partition.

EDIT: Today is the 10th April 2013. Not a glitch with my move as yet. :)

EDIT: Today is the 10th April 2013. Not a glitch with my move as yet. :)
Am replacing the old internal HDD with a new one ( just in case the old one says godbye one day ) and used cp -a to do the job : Nothing works :)
Was saying winload.exe would not work . Checked it and it is OK .
Attached the old HDD via USB adapter and ( of course ) would refuse to load via USB ( driver problem presumably ) .
Have Win8 TestCD once mounted and copied to a 20GB ntfs partition on the old HDD .
That would load by grub legacy command prompt : root (hd0,6) > chainloader +1 > boot .
Chosen the repair console and played a little with diskpart command to get the drive letters right and did a simple chkdsk C: /F then .
Still stops and the same bluescreen .

Reading the net it seems that winload.exe and/or other files need to be on the same inode ??
What is /usr/sbin/ntfsclone for ??
Any Ideas to repair this without the need to clone or dd ??

Acer Desktop Windows Vista

#91 Post by rokytnji »

Woke up this morning and the first thing before coffee. The wife starts telling me.
"My Computer is broken. Where did you put the restore dvds?"

Sighing. I say,"Wait a second. I'll take a look see."

She is pushing keyboard buttons and being a control freak. But getting no where fast.
I move into the chair. Sure enough there a a Hundred pop up windows saying

"can't find so and so ram error". The Desktop is frozen. I be not fully awake amble over to the coffee machine and pour a cup and think. Then I remember this thread, just the title.

Anyhows. I boot Macpup 529. I mount the vista files and go into programs and program libs.
I delete some folders and some files in folders.
ramfreer
arcsoft
mcafee

Cross my fingers and reboot. Boom. Everything boots up faster and is right with the world again.

I download revo and proceed to remove some old java installs and cleaning up what I left behind on the puppy linux
cleanup. Vista is actually snappy now.

Now to slow it back down with a Avast install. Reboot. Scan. Delete old restore point. Make a new restore point (I could not even get into system restore earlier).

While doing all of this. I found listening to
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xy4FXhkm6Nw

was quit soothing. Macpup 529 rules.

What to do when Windows Explorer doesn't refresh>

Another Whirlie forum discussion I saw.

Mind you I use Explorer Lite so I don't see this.

to little avail because the file is no longer available. "

I have to close and reopen folder to see that the desired action has taken place, and wonder why something like that might be occurring.

Maybe one to try >> encryption with a difference.

Plenty of free Office compatible suites as well on the site.

" SSuite Picsel secures all your text messages using Steganography encryption..."

" This application uses steganography, an unbreakable encryption method using only images as your key; no password necessary. "
