want a .pet to install gxine in Dpup

#1 Post by Shep »

560MHz PIII and when I play video clips off my HD using Dpup's mplayer after about 20 secs the sound breaks up then disappears though the clip's vison keeps on playing okay. I recall in other puppy's this did not happen with gxine, so I went seeking a pet to install gxine in Dpup.
I used the package manager and it says I now have installed:
gxineplugin_0.5.903 the xine video player GTK+Gnome launcher plugin for Mozilla

This has given me lots of gxine files, but doesn't do anything, so I guess it's not what I need. :?
# which gxine
# find / -name 'gxine*'
/root/.packages/gxineplugin_0.5.903.files
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/gxineplugin.so
/usr/lib/mime/packages/gxine
/usr/lib/gxine
/usr/lib/gxine/gxineplugin.so
/usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/gxineplugin.so
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/64x64/apps/gxine.png
/usr/share/doc/gxineplugin
/usr/share/lintian/overrides/gxineplugin
/usr/share/pixmaps/gxine.png
/initrd/pup_ro2/usr/lib/mime/packages/gxine
/initrd/pup_ro2/usr/share/icons/hicolor/64x64/apps/gxine.png
/initrd/pup_ro2/usr/share/pixmaps/gxine.png
/initrd/pup_rw/root/.packages/gxineplugin_0.5.903.files
/initrd/pup_rw/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/gxineplugin.so
/initrd/pup_rw/usr/lib/gxine
/initrd/pup_rw/usr/lib/gxine/gxineplugin.so
/initrd/pup_rw/usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/gxineplugin.so
/initrd/pup_rw/usr/share/doc/gxineplugin
/initrd/pup_rw/usr/share/lintian/overrides/gxineplugin
/mnt/sda6/root/root/.config/rox.sourceforge.net/OpenWith/gxine

So my question is: where can I find a pet to install gxine in Dpup?
Thanks. :P

I'm surprised. My experience has always been that Mplayer uses less resources than Gxine.

Are you using xv for the video driver? I have found that on some videos using OSS for the audio works better than Alsa although I don't know why. Also try de-selecting audio-video synchronisation and try allowing framedrop.

gxineplugin_0.5.903 the xine video player GTK+Gnome launcher plugin for Mozilla
By the way, that was a plugin for Mozilla web-browsers to launch xine while browsing and not a video player itself.

Try looking for xine-ui, it tends to be lighter on resources than Gxine. There are a few versions around. I have no idea what would work for Dpup.

You could also try VLC, some people like that but it has never appealed to me. Dpup pets for VLC on this page:

I'm sure you're right.

I've just spent 30 mins writing a lengthy reply, but seem to have lost it.

I can't face writing it all again, including cut 'n pastes and URLs. So I'll summarise: I'm giving up, and going for another puppy which has different software and will be hoping it performs better. This is partly prompted by my discovery today that this dpup refuses to burn a CD. I was forced to use an old copy of stardust to get that done.

Thanks for contributing advice in this forum. It will be a help to others here.
