What Puppy version are you using? I am assuming that you used the built-in Gutenprint driver for your Epson Stylus T20. Usually, these Gutenprint drivers are reliable. But I found info on an Ubuntu site that new Gutenprint versions are broken with this model and you need one earlier than 5.2.5. If you are still interested, I can post a PET for Gutenprint 5.2.3.iann wrote:my epson t20 won`t print.
How to Install Your Printer/Scanner in Puppy
The foo2xxx driver loads the firmware for your Laserjet 1000 through the udev procedure. Look at the file /etc/udev/rules.d/56hplj10xx.rules.lwill wrote:I have a HP LaserJet 1000 and have tried several times to get it working with no luck, and I have a tip for others now that I finally had success.
It is used on a laptop that dual boots XP, I had to power it down and back up (unplug) to reset it (no power switch) then it worked.
Is this due to the firmware or what ever the foo2xxx loads not compatible with what is done in XP?
Whenever udev detects the printer being powered up or its USB cable being plugged in, it triggers the firmware download.
I would have thought that as long as the printer was powered up, the firmware installed by XP would still be loaded and the foo2xxx driver would work. If not, Puppy's udev would detect the printer at boot-up and automatically load foo2xxx's firmware.
If neither of those are happening, you can manually load the firmware with this command
Code: Select all
cat /usr/share/foo2zjs/firmware/sihp1000.dl > /dev/usb/lp0
foo2zjs_2010-11 I forget where I downloaded it from , but I posted it somewhere.rcrsn51 wrote:What driver package are you using and where did you get it?jpeps wrote:What's that? I don't have it with my laserjet p1102w.rcrsn51 wrote:Look at the file /etc/udev/rules.d/56hplj10xx.rules.
rscn51: know any safe way to eject the usb printer device? Maybe deleting the /dev/usb/lb0 ? I just wiped out a hard drive after unplugging it, so there must be a way.
If you built it yourself, then you probably didn't include the optional udev-hotplug-firmware-download stuff.jpeps wrote:foo2zjs_2010-11 I forget where I downloaded it from , but I posted it somewhere.

Please describe the circumstances.
Looks like it's optional and for other printers:rcrsn51 wrote: If you built it yourself, then you probably didn't include the optional udev-hotplug-firmware-download stuff.

I might be missing it but is there supposed to be a printer (&scanner) driver for the HP Photosmart Premium C310? *In the .pet at the other end of this thread.
BTW I switched to a fresh Slacko5.3.3 (from Lucid 5.2.

Thanks. I didn't scroll down far enough. It wasn't just photosmart C310 ir was Photosmart Premium C310 (sigh)
BTW I tried the latest lucid update and that solved some of my wife's lock up problems. Anyway, I appreciate your help.
I've been switching back and forth between that and slacko which is helping me crawl to a (slightly) lelss noob level experience.
One thing I don't quite get. Is the source of all the drivers hplip? Its nothing important I'm just curious how things work and what came from what / where.

They come from here. But it's a stripped-down build specifically for the Puppy environment.James186282 wrote:One thing I don't quite get. Is the source of all the drivers hplip? Its nothing important I'm just curious how things work and what came from what / where.

I'm trying to remember the hoops I jumped through to print from puppy to a Win2K computer with an HP Laserjet 4.
pnethood is working fine
if I run nslookup
Server 192.168.1.1
Address 192.168.1.1 pc2
Name ULTIMATE-D5B436
Address 1 192.168.1.107 ultimate-d5b436
I can ping the Win2k Box ok. The firewalls are off on both sides. It kind of making me loops. Earlier in this thread you talked about smbw I'm not familiar with that.
Could you suggest any trouble shooting plan that might help me figure out this (No Doubt Dumb) error I'm making?
Thanks - J

I've tried a variety of them - currently its set to
smbc://WORKGROUP/ultimate-d7b349/HPLaserjet-4
In the "Printers" part of CUPs it says
LaserJet (Default Printer)
"password@WORKGROUP\ultimate-d5345\HPLaserjet-4:
Not enough \ Characters in service"
Not enough \ Characters??
Anyhow in the same page it says
"Device URI:smbc://WORKGROUP/ultimate-d5b345/HPLaserjet-4"
Printer state:stopped, accepting jobs, published.
It seems odd that the uri is not the same as the description. In pnethoodsambashares the password seem to be required. I'm feeling like I can see the forest because all the trees are in the way.
I may have really munged things I downgraded CUPs to the 1.3.11 rev.
I double checked that I can print fromthe windoze box.

First of all, install the smbw backend from Page 1. If you actually need authentication, it is the best choice. It is listed in CUPS as "Windows/Samba Printer".
Try
What CUPS messages do you get?
If you think that authentication is required, use

Hi rcrsn51. I thought I'd try out slacko 5.3.3 and am having problems getting the oki C3400 to print. The download/ install of file listed on page 1 seemed to go ok. Also tried foo2xxx icm-1.0.pet. CUPS does discover the printer on the network and it sends the job, oki lights seem to recognize the job and the job is listed by cups as being completed - but no actual printed page. I've tried restarting the printer and using various of the drivers listed after the 'continue' button is activated. I've tried monochrome and colour and various other default settings. Any ideas of what to try next? Thanks edit: this post is on pg 8

This maybe the dumbest question ever. The user is what I log on when I start the Win2k machine - correct? Maybe to unsort this I should give the "Machine" something unique. There are too many "Ultimate"s in this puzzle. Thanks on the smbw. I didn't know where to look - now I do!
I'm not sure how to thank you but I really appreciate all the help you've given me.

The authentication code did the trick. It
It printed the test page - the only oddity was that not enough \ characters thing but after the test page it seems to have gone away.
Humm one more odd thing. Here is what CUPs thinks is the URI after I used the one you suggested
smbw://workgroup/ultimate-d7b349/HPLaserjet-4
The username:password appear to have evaporated? Odd....
I can't tell you how much I appreciate your tireless efforts to help noobs like me! This was at the "make me pull my own head off" stage.

CUPS is designed to work in a multi-user environment. Once the printer is installed, CUPS hides the password to the Windows machine so other users can't see it.James186282 wrote: Humm one more odd thing. Here is what CUPs thinks is the URI after I used the one you suggested
