Playing .avi video files Sub_title: Blue screen with video players and .avi |
|
Neither the out of the box GNOME mplayer 0.9.6 or Vlc 1.0.6 play any of my video (avi) files. I get a blue screen in the video panel with the audio playing.
I downloaded (not via PPM or QuickPet) GNOME mplayer 0.9.9.2 Pet which the PPM says is the latest version available at the lucid repo. I don't see any provision for uninstalling the old version. I take a chance and install the new; no ill effects. But I still have the same problem even when I switch to IceWin which PPM says I should use with mplayer 0.9.9.2.

[Edit]
I grab Smplayer-0.6.8-Lucid.pet from the repo. Same problem. Seems the codec for playing an avi is missing. A link please.

Have you tried other avi's? It depends on which vlc, etc you are using, but I've almost never had issues with avi files.
Try from command, assuming your avi file is named 'myavifile.avi':
| Code: |
vlc --vout x11 /where/your/fileis/myavifile.avi
|
...and post what output you get. That will give us more info.

Frugal install Lucid Puppy 510.
I just played this avi video, live fullscreen in Firefox 3.6.8
http://www.linux-video.net/Samples/AVI/Gumby/Gumby_Eve_Magazine.avi
I then downloaded and saved and played it fullscreen in VLC and Gnome MPlayer. No problems.

If it's the same blue screen video issue that I was having with Puppy 5 series then it was not a matter of missing codec. The issue was resolved by simply configuring Xorg with 24 bit colour rather than 16 bit colour.

Your command gave me both audio and video, but there is an error in the screen output. Attached is a screen-shot of the output.
Clicking on the avi still does not work. Here is the output from the CLI commands:
vlc Wall-E.avi >mplayer-output.txt
mplayer Wall-E.avi >mplayer-output.txt
mplayer spartacus.avi >mplayer-output.txt
CL command: vlc Wall-E.avi >vlc-output.txt
Text file output: null file.
Screen output:
VLC media player 1.0.6 Goldeneye

with same avi file and CLI: cvlc Wall-E.avi >cvlc-output.txt
